Boys and Girls Club Event Draws On Former Detroit Red Wing

Former Detroit Red Wing Kirk Maltby will be the special guest at Boys and Girls Club of Troy Event

The will break ground Saturday on an organic garden as part of its new Positive Sprouts program to help ensure a healthy young America.

Former Detroit Red Wing Kirk Maltby will make a special appearance at the groundbreaking, which is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Boys and Girls Club, 3670 John R.

A registration and a volunteer breakfast will take place at 8 a.m. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 9 a.m.

Activities scheduled for Saturday include the gardening for kids; garden building and planting; a pot decorating station with take-home pots and seeds; garden-stick painting; a smoothie station; and other garden-related activities.

The organic gardening program was made through a partnership with Amway, which provided a grant to the Boys and Girls Club of Troy, as well as five other Boys and Girls Clubs across the nation. Troy's garden will be one of the first cultivated under the program.

Amway is one of the world’s largest direct selling businesses of a wide variety of nutrition products.

The goal of the organizations is to have children learn and commit to a healthy lifestyle while enjoying the process. The mission is also to spread awareness of the benefits that come from creating such edible gardens that will nurture one’s well-being.
