Troy City Council Member to Residents: 'Vote Yes to Recall Mayor Janice Daniels'
In an open letter to Troy voters, Councilman Jim Campbell, with support from two fellow council members, urges voters to recall the mayor on Nov. 6.
Just days before the Nov. 6 general election, Councilman Jim Campbell is urging residents to "Vote 'Yes' to recall Mayor Janice Daniels."
“At this point in the game, she should know what she should and shouldn’t do," said Campbell, who noted the turning point for him in deciding to write an open letter to Troy residents was the mayor's recent argument with Troy Distinguished Citizen Mary Kerwin as she presented Kerwin with a proclamation.
“That was the final straw," Campbell said. "She’s done so many things, it’s become literally ridiculous. It’s an insult to the City of Troy.”
Mayor Pro Tem Maureen McGinnis agreed with Campbell that the incident between Daniels and Kerwin was unacceptable.
"I was also very disheartened to see how the Mayor handled the proclamation for the 2012 Troy Distinguished Citizen Award, especially given the fact that Leadership Troy has nothing to do with political parties and because the award is such a high honor for Mary Kerwin, who has served the community for decades," McGinnis said. "Unfortunately, the Mayor has not been able to establish what it actually was that she read that gave her some indication the award was tied to a political party, leaving many with the impression that her comments were meant to diminish the award or the recipient, neither of which is acceptable."
McGinnis added that negative publicity generated by the incident "impacts the amount of time and energy that we are able to spend on developing policy that will improve life for our residents and businesses."
Councilman Dane Slater also agreed the incident between Daniels and Kerwin was embarrassing for the City of Troy, though he said it is just one of many things the mayor has done to damage the city's reputation.
"That was the icing on the cake for a very disappointing and disastrous year under the reign of Janice Daniels," Slater said. "It’s not any one thing – it’s been a culmination of a year of many disasters that just needs to come to an end."
Slater said that, while he was also disappointed and embarrassed by the way Daniels treated Kerwin during the Oct. 22 Troy City Council Meeting, he is also deeply concerned about how Daniels' ideology is impacting the citizens of Troy.
"She proved to me and to everybody else that her ideology was more important than the citizens of Troy when she voted against a resolution to protect the citizens of Troy from overrun costs of the transit center," Slater said. "That resolution had nothing to do with the transit center – it had to do with hiring a manager to make sure the costs did not exceed what we had put as a limit, and that the firm would be responsible for anything above that.
"In essence, she voted against protecting the citizens of Troy ... just to say that she voted against everything about the transit center. To me, that was the final proof that she has more concerns about her ideology than protecting the residents of Troy.”
Other council members believe Daniels should be allowed to finish her term. During recent Troy City Council meetings, Councilman Dave Henderson has spoken in support of Mayor Daniels and continues to support her.
"The people voted her in a year ago, and it’s not my responsibility to carry a banner that’s going to undo what the people want," Henderson said. "The people wanted someone who was going to come in and watch the budget, watch the transit center, and that’s what she ran on and what she was elected to do."
Henderson added that being a politician "is not an easy thing to do," and admitted Daniels' first year has been less than perfect.
“If you get bombarded with the press the way she’s been bombarded with the press, it’s awful tough to handle that," Henderson said. "I’m willing to give her the benefit of the doubt and give her the learning curve too.”
He added: "Whatever the people want, the people get. That’s what democracy is about."
Campbell addresses Troy residents
In Councilman Campbell's open letter to Troy residents, he writes:
To my fellow Troy residents,
I am very proud to have been elected to serve you as a city of Troy councilman. Unfortunately, I am not so proud of some of the issues and controversies that have surfaced since the election involving Mayor Daniels.
On day one, Mayor Daniels decided to revise the traditional oath of office that Councilman Henderson, Councilman Tietz, and I took along with her. She took it upon herself to eliminate any reference to the Troy city charter without ever discussing the oath revision with any of us. I saw this as rather strange behavior on her part. Just for the record I went back to the city clerk the next day and formally retook my oath in the traditional manner.
Little did I know that this event would be only the beginning of a rather long string of bizarre and unacceptable behaviors that would be brought forth by Mayor Daniels. I don’t think it is necessary to go through the laundry list of the events of the past year, suffice to say that none of her tirades, accusations or unprofessional behaviors has done anything to promote the city of Troy in a positive light!
The council has spent far too much time attempting to control her actions both in the public view as well as behind closed doors. The focus of the council and the city management has been diverted from doing the business of the city for too long.
It is also very important to clearly understand that the statements, opinions and attitudes that have been stated by Mayor Daniels are hers and hers alone. She does not speak for Mayor Pro Tem McGinnis, Councilman Slater, or me.
Mayor Daniel’s recent performance presenting the Troy Distinguished Citizen Award to Mary Kerwin proved to be the last straw for me. Again, I am sure everyone is well aware of the disrespectful manners shown by Mayor Daniels, just another sign of her lack of capability, professionalism and ideology.
I personally want to apologize to Mary Kerwin and Leadership Troy for the appalling and unnecessary treatment that was thrust on you by our Mayor.
Now the day of reckoning is drawing near for our mayor. The recall ballot provides a clear picture of the reasons for the recall. Each of the items on the ballot can be verified with public information. Unfortunately, the mayor’s ballot rebuttal is full of distortions written to show her as the “Victim”. Rest assured she is no victim!
Just to add a little more drama to the situation, now the Michigan Tea Party is planning on supporting Mayor Daniels against the recall effort. Interesting that the person who is running her “NO Recall” campaign is from Alpena not Troy? This is also true for many of her other supporters and cash donors. In the meantime our mayor is making personal appearances at homes and business that display the “Vote Yes Recall” signs. Her mission is to try to have them take the signs down. Could this be considered intimidation?
It’s rumored that the Tea Party supporters will have a strong presence at the polling locations in Troy. Gee, what a surprise!
Apparently the tradition of having a non-partisan election in Troy is another thing of the past?
November 6, 2012 is not only a critical day for the country; it is also a crucial day for us in Troy. Are we going to turn our heads from the unpleasantness and obnoxious behavior of an elected official who has tarnished our city in so many different ways? Or are we going to stand up and say that we the people of Troy demand and deserve better?
If you are proud of the city you live in and believe in our motto: “Troy-The City of Tomorrow Today” then you choice is clear: Vote “Yes” to Recall Mayor Janice Daniels.
Exercise your right to vote!
Sincerely:
James Campbell
Troy City Councilman & Troy Resident
“I think she sees herself as a politician, as moving up in the world, and I think she’s propped up by other people who are doing her an injustice by supporting her," Campbell added. "She’s a council member – she’s not a dictator. ... She does not represent the best interests of the City of Troy."
Calls from Patch to Janice Daniels seeking comment on Campbell's letter were not returned Thursday afternoon.
Complete coverage
Daniels took office in November of 2011 and first came under fire in December for her anti-gay Facebook comment. She has remained the center of controversy after voting against the Troy Transit Center (a scaled-down version was later approved), telling the Troy High School Gay-Straight Alliance she would bring in an expert to tell them the homosexual lifestyle is "dangerous," comparing the dangers of homosexuality to the dangers of smoking cigarettes on a radio show, and writing a lengthy position paper some viewed as personally attacking city employees and council members.

Thank you, Jim for your honesty, your candor and your opinion as to the recall of Janice Daniels as Mayor of the City of Troy. I my over 30 years of living in this fine city, I have NEVER been so angry and upset at what has gone on during meetings and outside of meetings. I have found that the mayor has her own agenda and could care less about the citizens. The argument with Mary Kerwin was the last straw-How dare she make Mrs. Kerwin's honor less of an honor by using her own agenda to announce that this honor was from Democratic Club. All she had to do was read the proclamation-she didn't have to argue with the recipient. She didn't need to embarrass Mrs. Kerwin or the rest of the city council, but yet she did. Enough is enough-PLEASE Troy, VOTE YES TO RECALL JANICE DANIELS. Let's take back our city!!

Jim Campbell’s comments reveal him as a member of the Coffee Party, and he uses some extreme language to describe Mayor Daniels. He has a right to vote how he wishes and to encourage others to vote the same way, but to imply that the 4 items in the recall petition are completely true and unbiased is laughable. Her rebuttal is true and puts her in the best light. Perhaps he could name some specifics that are not true instead of just saying it is full of distortions.

There is nothing wrong with the Tea Party; it is a conservative wing of the Republican Party that cares about our country’s future as much as the Coffee Party does. The behavior of the anti-Tea Party rallies was pretty amazing; they left behind a huge amount of litter for other people to clean up.
The City Council will have an interesting November and December if the recall “succeeds.” Please join me in voting No on the mayoral recall so the deadlocked council can do city business before Christmas instead of figuring out a new process for choosing Mayor Daniels’ replacement.

This recall is about Janice Daniels, not the Tea Party. How could it be. Janice Daniels spent her entire campaign claiming to be an independent citizen who was a political newcomer and beholding to no political party. Sadly, we all learned different once she was elected. She was a wolf in sheep's clothing. But apologists like Dale believe the ends always justify the means. Mr. Murrish has shown himself to be not only blindly biased in favor of Daniels buffoonery, but unrepentantly dishonest and misleading in all of his postings. Despite multiple Troy citizens continually correcting his purposeful distortions and outright lies, he continues to post the same tripe over and over. Don't believe it. Our year-long nightmare is about to end with the recall of Janice Daniels who has proved to be, not only a local, but a national embarrassment. On November 6, 2012, Vote YES to Recall Mayor Daniels!

Dale. Her rebuttal is ridiculous. Your blogs are filled with untruths that we have spent hours refuting, with black and white, video, and audio.
There is nothing wrong with the Tea Party? What in God's name is the Coffee Party? Really? CM Jim Campbell is absolutely an upstanding gentleman. The process for choosing Janice's replacement is already resolved by charter. You have spent so much time and effort defending someone who was not honest during her campaign for the election. She claimed to be independent. Immediately after her election, her true colors exploded. She has embarrassed this community. She has attacked staff and citizens. She lacks the experience, the education, the integrity, and the character to represent Troy.
By the way, What anti-Tea Party rally occurred? If there had been one, I would have been there. And I challenge you to produce a single piece of litter produced! More lies.
Another lie: A deadlocked council. They were able to pass a budget and hire a new city manager in SPITE of Janice, who chose not to participate. She has been too busy harassing people in their homes and businesses because they have chosen to recall her. Encouraging people to steal. Charges will be filed for the thefts. . You say there are multiple ways to look at these things. Dale, get rid of the kaleidoscope and see reality!
Time for you to take off the blinders and perhaps pursue a smidgen of maturity.
Vote Yes! I already did!!!

Dale: was there nothing wrong with the Sterling Heights councilman who attended the Tea Party rally while he was holding the racist, antigay signage with horrible violent imagery? You know, the good friend of our mayor who showed up at OUR council meeting to defend her? The guy who said Obama was worse the Hitler?
Perhaps any group of people might contain some who might be irresponsible, or wackadoodles, or litter bugs. This does not mean the entire group is. I am also curious as to why, since there is nothing wrong with the Tea party, why do you think the mayor, and others, assiduously hid their extremely close affiliation with that group? I think it is because they knew they would not have been elected if they were forthcoming.

Mayor Daniels wanted to meet the people who are opposing her before they vote to recall her. Most of the recall supporters have never met her, much less shared a cup of coffee or a meal with her.
I think it takes a lot of class and guts to knock on doors of people who oppose you to dialogue with them. Her opponents would call it “reaching out” if they didn’t dislike her so much.
There’s at least two ways to look at everything, and apparently Jim Campbell has chosen to look at the coffee side. I’ll stick with tea, thank you.

Regarding the ballot: as CM Cambell everything on the yes recall part of the ballot has been documented, while the no recall part absolutely cannot. Dale's refusal to acknowledge these facts is dismaying, but I don't expect that it will cease, as Mr. Murrish has blissfully been spared the ravages of actual reality. He exists in a world where the only true things are his ideology and anything contradictory simply has no merit.

I tried to speak with her one year ago. All of her little friends, Kempen, F. Howrylak et al got between me and her and she looked in the other direction. I wasn't being nasty. My children were with me. I asked her questions and she pretended I wasn't there while Kempen started chatting up my kids and trying to mover me away from her. Maybe you could ask your friend Janice what that was all about?
I fought with that woman for two years over trying to fund the library. She and her friends cheated every which way but loose. I was asking her why she was standing out in front of the library claiming to be the library candidate while anyone with the remotest interest in saving the library knew she was the library's absolute ENEMY. Yet there she was.
After the election I thought I would hibernate politically, but she just kept having one dumbo eruption after another -scandal after scandal after scandal.
You claim to have a job, Dale, so you should have experienced going to your lunchroom several cities away and have people ask you about your crazy mayor. Happened to me over and over and over. Even at the car dealership in Farmington. "You're from Troy, " she sneered, "What is with your neighbor." Janice Daniels is a humiliation from Troy. Dale:
It is true there are many to look at many things. I will stick with facts, evidence, and what can be proven. That is the indisputable truth. This is my worldview and I do not change it to fit what I would wish to be true, or any particular ideology of any sort. If the facts of the matter conflict with what I hold to be true, then I change what I hold to be true. Here is what I hold to be true: the mayorship of Janice Daniels has been bad for Troy and I believe her continuing as mayor will bring nothing but more bad. I have plenty of evidence to support that. What cold hard facts can you give me to change my mind?

Dale -
"Her rebuttal is true"...except for the whole library on Saturday thing, right? She did vote no against the library opening on Saturday which is the EXACT OPPOSITE of what she claims in her rebuttal, right? Is that specific enough?
The guy was the President of the Troy Republicans...I would guess this is the first time in his life he has ever been referred to as liberal. I am sure the explanation for this is that he must be a Republican in name only. So if the Democrats are for her recall, the independents are for her recall, and the people that just aren't republican enough for you are also for her recall...then that doesn't leave very many people left.
I am hoping that the mayor is not only recalled, but that she is recalled by an overwhelming majority so there is no confusion. This is election will make the statement loud and clear that our city won't be used as a political playground anymore.

CM Henderson mentions how difficult it is for Ms. Daniels to be "bombarded" by the press. But let's remember one thing: Ms. Daniels herself is responsible for that onslaught. No other Mayor in Troy has faced this type of questioning before. No other Mayor in Troy has had this much negative press. No other Mayor in Troy has caused this much controversy.
And whom can Mayor Daniels blame for that? Oh, that's right...herself.
What is difficult, Mr. Henderson, is doing the right thing and standing up for the same. I'm pretty sure the press would leave the Mayor alone more if she tried it.

Mr. Murrish is wrong, again. It's no longer frustrating to hear Mr. Murrish with his blind allegiance spewing the same falsehoods and nonsense, it's comical. Truly. And Freedommatters is drinking the Kool-Aid and spouting the same old nonsense that if you aren't in favor of the mayor, you're a liberal, when nothing could be further from the truth. And once again (or is it a thousand times again), she brought this on herself. No other 'conservative' member of Council is under the spector of a recall. And it's interesting how her supporters cry out for her freedom of speech rights, and would deny Mr. Campbell, Mr. Slater, and Ms. McGinnis those same rights. And, yes, her totally misguided attempt to support Howrylak over Mary Kerwin resulted in the ultimate final insult to the citizens of Troy (by the way, isn't it odd that Howrylak begs for a clean campaign, and yet the Republican Party pays for smear adds on TV?). Yes indeed, Mr. Murrish is wrong, again.

For the 18 years that I served on the Troy City Council we all worked together for the betterment of the city. Yes we had some knock down drag out arguments...we had many 4-3 votes but it was never the same 4 and the same 3 because we all cared much more about Troy and what was best for ALL the citizens of our great city. We were truly a non-partisan council. Troy was the envy of cities all over the country and indeed in other parts of the world. Businesses and residents alike were very proud to call Troy their home. I have friends across the country that used to live in Troy that are in disbelief about the state of the city. Janice Daniels has turned the City of Troy into an embarrassment and worse because her ideology is much more important to her than what is best for the city. If she is not recalled Troy will continue to be fractured and torn apart. For the betterment of the City of Troy I urge everyone to vote yes to Recall Janice Daniels.

Mayor Daniels likes to say that she is doing something based on her "principles." It appears that Councilman Campbell is a man of principles also. I applaud him for deciding, as a businessman, former Republican Club president and scout leader that truth and integrity DO matter in Troy. One can only imagine how difficult it must be to on the city council and helplessly watch our city endure one humiliating situation after another, due to the words and actions of one person, the Mayor. If this were the private sector, which the Tea Party/Libertarians so often hold up as the gold standard, Mayor Daniels would have been reprimanded and fired for cause months ago. Thank you, Mr. Campbell, Ms. McGinnis and Mr. Slater for having the foresight to look beyond ideology and partisanship, and try and prevent further damage to our city's reputation and growth. As you can see below, no where in the Proclamation that was given to Mary Kerwin did it say anything about being awarded to her by the "Troy Democrat Club." Either Janice Daniels was editorializing in a pathetic attempt to inject politics into a non-partisan achievement or Janice Daniels simply can't read very well. You can choose, it's obviously one or the other.

Mrs. Kerwin had every right to interrupt her and to attempt to stop Janice from publicly disparaging her reputation and the distinguished award. Janice is not queen of Troy. JS, I think by this time we can identify the vocabulary and the patterns. I can make an educated guess that I am speaking to Janice Daniels. The caps lock gives you away. Mary was not out of order. You were out of order. Nowhere in that proclamation, that you had earlier signed, did it say anything about the Troy Democratic Club. The Troy Democratic Club does not do a Distinguished Citizen award, much less use a pseudonym of Leadership Troy. Mary Kerwin interrupted you because you LIED. SHAME ON YOU! I applaud Jim Campbell for taking a stand and supporting the recall campaign. He has been in a good position to see the inadequacy of your performance and your qualification both in public and behind closed doors in meetings. He used no dirty tricks. He stated the truth, not the fantasy you have insisted on since your election. Actually, since your campaign, when you professed to be an independent.
Your mailer that arrived at my home yesterday is full of lies. You had nothing to do with balancing the budget , since you never opened your MOUTH during the budget sessions. You have had nothing to do with tax rates in Troy, you only voted against a pass through increase in the garbage pickup. You have done NOTHING to bring business to Troy. All of the businesses you claim, were actually accomplished before you took office.

Buh bye, Mayor Daniels......here's a portion of an email I received from a high school classmate, THS alum who currently lives in New York City. She is blissfully ignorant of the front-and-center fun and games we have endured here in Troy, but calling us out on the national media perception of our fair town because of our inept mayor:
"Janice Daniels keeps showing up in all my NATIONAL news feeds, and it's always embarrassing for Troy. I swear everyone thinks that Troy is a huge hicktown w/ a ignorant bigot as a mayor. This needs to end."
And......scene.

I just remembered I wrote to Mayor Daniels when she omitted the city charter from the oath. I saved the email and just reread what she wrote. She said one reason is she is required to sign a proclamation to term limits. She does not believe in term limits and feels..."The best term limits are an informed citizenry who will vote out perceived bad leadership." Wow! The irony! Vote to YES to Recall Janice Daniels!

"MARY KERWIN AND Councilman Jim Campbell SHOULD APOLIZIE TO THE CITY OF TROY AN OUR MAYOR. "
I am not finding your word APOLIZIE in the dictionary. We, the people, are educated, informed and prepared to vote YES: to RECALL MAYOR DANIELS on November 6, 2012.

The dedicated citizens of Troy also need to remember those names supporting Janice and seen on the mailing filled with lies. Three current members of council, Henderson, Fleming and Tietz appear on the flyer. How can anyone with any ounce of integrity and decency be a part of this sham to dissuade those who they were elected to serve? This has to stop. I know for a fact that there are more citizens in Troy who are intelligent, respectful and want what's best for our fine city than those who continue to run amok, spread lies and do whatever is necessary for political gain. We will show not only our community, but the nation that we insist on leaders dedicated to Troy. We will not allow those who want to use it for their greedy, malicious means. We will recall Janice Daniels! Let this be a strong message to others. We will repair the damage done to our reputation. We will hold those elected accountable for their words and actions.

Thank you for sharing your perspective, Councilman Campbell. And I appreciate the insight here from Mayor Pro Tem McGinnis and Councilman Slater. Folks trying to discern should consider the following about these three leaders:
I am grateful to Mayor Pro Tem Maureen McGinnis for patiently and professionally bringing her bright, legal mind to the council table and continuing her family’s legacy of giving back to this community. Clearly, the fruit does not fall far from the tree as she builds upon the contribution her father -- who served on the school board for five years (two of them as President) – made to Troy.
I am humbled that Councilman Dane Slater chooses to give of his retirement years to dispassionately and logically pursue evidence-based decision making. A retired Troy Police Captain, he clearly brings an understanding of municipal management and the challenges of Troy’s Police Department. This is critical, especially given the fact that Troy’s PD has been rewound to a largely reactive department, versus proactive department.
I am relieved that Councilman Jim Campbell brings his private sector experience to the table. His pragmatic, truly business-like approach is proven; this is a man who purchased a company near bankruptcy and successfully turned it around. Campbell is a fiscal conservative with the business know-how critical to council’s ability to navigate through this complicated time in Troy’s history.

I am proud of the city I live in and believe in our motto: “Troy-The City of Tomorrow Today” and my choice is clear: I'm voting NO to recall the mayor. In my eyes, those who are trying to recall her are the bullies. I don't think our city has been tarnished by her, maybe by you recall folks, but houses in my neighborhood have sold very quickly, so the mayor hasn't "tarnished" the city as some of you have implied. I agreed with her regarding the transit center and I certainly did not vote for the library millage.

Whether those homes would have sold for more if the mayor was not controversial is an open question. I do know for sure, if she was mayor 12 years ago when I made my substantial investment in Troy I would not have been looking here. I would not have in a community with an extremist mayor. Gay people alone are about 10% of the population, do you think they believe Troy is a welcoming community? Less competition among buyers = lower sales prices: a simple law of economics. Having a divisive mayor like this cannot be good for property values.

When Mayor Daniels announced her candidacy, she described herself as a grassroots Independent in the Troy Times. As her true hyper-partisanship becomes more and more transparent to more and more residents, here are some thoughts about the root cause of the divisiveness in Troy and why we need to reject this partisanship: http://troy.patch.com/blog_posts/lets-seize-the-opportunity-to-ensure-troy-remains-a-vital-organization#comments
