Troy Mayor's Facebook Slam on Gay Marriage Draws Widespread Criticism
The post has been shared more than 100 times by outraged Facebook users by Friday evening; Janice Daniels adds a comment of her own and draws responses.
Janice Daniels is not yet a month into her new position as mayor of Troy, and she is already causing controversy after a status update slamming gay marriage on what appears to be her personal Facebook page went viral Friday afternoon.
The June 25 status update reads: "I think I am going to throw away my I Love New York carrying bag now that queers can get married there." The post was tucked among other posts and photos about Daniels' mayoral campaign, as well as personal photos and status updates.
As the status, which was first discovered by Keep Troy Strong on Thursday, made its way around Facebook, Twitter and the web, hundreds of people shared and commented on it.
In a report Friday evening by MLive, an Ann Arbor-based news site, the mayor is quoted as saying: "I probably shouldn’t have used that kind of language, but I do believe marriage should be between one man and one woman."
According to MLive, Daniels also criticized Keep Troy Strong, which first spread word of the Facebook post, for having a vendetta against her administration. The site supported a Troy library millage approved by voters in July and backs a planned transit center, each of which which Daniels opposed.
Craig Covey, an Oakland County Commissioner and former mayor of Ferndale, posted a comment on his Facebook page: "No mayor, of any city, particularly one as large and diverse as Troy, should ever use vulgar slurs to insult an entire community. She needs to apologize to the entire region for this nasty posting."
Covey added on the Troy Patch Facebook page: "The new mayor of Troy needs to understand that she now has a responsibility to all the people of Troy. Troy is a large, important, diverse community and she needs to apologize to the citizens of Troy, including its gay residents, as well as the visitors, employees, and businesses in the city. Then she needs to apologize to the entire region."
Earlier, one of the first Facebook shares of the post was by Equality Michigan: "We are shocked and appalled and call on the Mayor to apologize, and to endorse a non-discrimination ordinance in her city that protects gay and transgender residents of Troy from the harm that such language breeds."
Denise Brogan-Kator, executive director of Equality Michigan, who also shared the status update Friday afternoon, wrote: "I find it discouraging that a leader of people can have such disregard for the lives of people she serves. Many of us use the word 'queer' as a way to reclaim a word that has historically been used to hurt us, by the majority. Clearly, from the context, this is NOT what Mayor Daniels intended.
"I am truly shocked at such disregard for the effects that such language has had on our community. Either she doesn't know – which is remarkable, given the news about the rise in violent crimes committed against the gay and transgender community – or she intended it. Either way, I find it shameful."
"Anyone that aspires to hold public office," Brogan-Kator added in a phone conversation Friday evening, "has a responsibility to keep their communications and opinions of classes and people respectful – and I think this crossed the line – and at a bare minimum think she needs to apologize to the gay and transgender population in the city of Troy and in Michigan."
Daniels also commented on this story, although she did not return phone calls to her office.
"I firmly support marriage as being defined as between one man and one woman and I am not going to change my position," Daniels commented in part. "That said, I love all people and will continue to work towards promoting a vibrant City of Troy.
"The groups that despise me are digging deep to try to find something to worry about. They probably should start worrying about how they can best work with a new Mayor who believes that we live in a free country and we all have first amendment rights to speak our minds on any and all issues that are before us."
She ended the comment: "BTW, I am still carrying my I Love New York bag," and signed it Janice Daniels, Mayor of the great City of Troy.
Brogan-Kator took issue with Daniels' lack of response.
"She is now a public official and I think it would be best for her to speak on the record," Brogan-Kator said. "She clearly has shed a light onto her city and this is her opportunity to make that light be a good one – and right now it is not."
Sue Martin, a Troy resident and co-founder of Troy Residents United for a Strong Troy (TRUST), also had harsh words Friday, by phone, regarding Daniels' written response. "I support her right to her opinion, but it seems to me she is excusing it and writing it off as people dislike me," Martin said. "But it’s out there because she said it."
As of 6:30 p.m. Friday, the Facebook status update had been shared more than 104 times.
"I cannot believe anyone could get elected to any position if they are this ignorant!" wrote Facebook user Allison Hughes, who shared Daniels' status update to her own wall Friday afternoon. "Makes me want to punch her in the face or hit her with that New York handbag!"
On the Troy Patch Facebook page, there were many comments as well:
Katie Taylor Mowrey: It's painful and embarrassing. She may be Mayor of my city, but she doesn't represent me. She is a leader of ignorance and intolerance. Frightening that she's so proud of it.
Kim Kuras Yanchyshyn: She reminds me of a bull in a china shop. Wonder what will break next.
Joe Keenan: The mayor seems to think that using the word "queer" is okay because some in the gay community use it in an attempt to take it back from it's hurtful connotations. As some in the African-American community use the n-word, I'm wonder how soon the mayor uses the n-word in her "queer" logic kind of way?
Sam Zayvan: She's throwing away her I love NY shirt because gays can get married there? Doesn't she realize that NY was the gayest place on earth before that? I mean, even half of the women in New York are gay men. I think she, like many Tea Partiers, like her gays singing on Broadway and waiting on her at restaurants, but not enjoying basic human rights.
Twitter was also abuzz on Friday with comments about Daniels' Facebook post:
@twenty3curls: "Completely embarrassed that this is my mayor."
@hobbsadventure: "Apalling."
@techiegrrl: "can she be recalled? So not cool!!"
@_MarkRDobbins: "For shame."
@rootwyrm: "Throwing away my Troy, MI mug now that hate filled bigots can be mayor there. (Also will not be visiting till you get rid of her.)"
Calls to several city council members for comment have gone unanswered.
Brittney Moody contributed to this report.
Clarification: This story has been edited to remove mention of one "no comment" from a city official. Patch felt it was unfair to this individual to include a no comment when he had no prior knowledge of the post when he was contacted.

The fact that someone would say "...the gay community calls themselves queer." basically says it all. This is apologist behavior no different than the person who uses the N-word and says "...they use this word to refer to one another all the time". It's 2012...anyone who doesn't get the cultural differentiations that allow one group to use an expression for themselves -- while being insulted when it's used in a completely different sense by others -- has been living under a rock. Judging by this woman's hairstyle, the rock is prehistoric.

Yes Kevin - the gay community calls themselves queer. I firmly support marriage as being defined as between one man and one woman and I am not going to change my position. Listen Lady, We can call ourselves queer the way black people can call themselves the N word. It is about owning a pejorative as our own to take away your power to hurt us with it. Nevertheless, context is everything. It is clear what you meant. How stupid so you think we are? You are a disgrace. And by all means, stay out of NY because we don't love you or your ilk. I'm actually kind of sad that you have that bag seeing as how you clearly know nothing of our local culture. Disgusting.

Obviously you don't "love all people" if you deny them basic human rights.
And yes, the gay community calls THEMSELVES queer in order to reclaim it as a positive thing. It is not a word for hateful straight people to use as a slur.
You are a vile hypocrite and a despicable person. Troy should be ashamed of you.

Also, learn what the first amendment is actually about. It means the GOVERNMENT can't persecute you for what you say. It doesn't mean people can't think you're awful when you say awful things; it just means you can't get arrested. Go back to grade school.

Yes, you have your first amendment right. That means the government can't prosecute you for your words. What you're ignoring is that I also have the first amendment right to criticize you. People like you (Dr. Laura comes to mind) who say "my first amendment right has been breached" shouldn't be allowed to be in government. You lack a basic understanding of the constitution that you're supposed to be upholding. The first amendment only means that the government can't prosecute you for anything you say with very few exceptions (threats, libel, slander, treason).

I think I am going to throw away my I Love Michigan carrying bag now that women can vote and hold office there. I mean the bible clearly states in Corinthians 14:34 Let your women be silent in the assemblies, for they are not allowed to speak, but to be in subjection, just as The Written Law also says.
OR we can restate that about black people being allowed to get married to white people
Why don't you shut your bigot mouth and stop promoting hate because a book of collected 10000 year old arabic, persian, roman, jewish, and babylonian verbal stories that is rephrased and retranslated over and over to fit the needs of those kings in power said so?

It is especially detestable, Ms. Daniels, when women make such crude statements about gay people and then try and hide behind their bigotry with 'religious beliefs.'
I have yet to hear a single woman, religious or otherwise, suggest that women should be treated in civil law in the manner the bible demands women are to be treated.
Yet, very, very many women like you will turn around and make bigoted statements like yours, with an ideology behind it that suggests that your vile bigotry is somehow justifiable because of what is written in the very same book that demands sub-human treatment of YOU as a woman, Ms. Daniels.
Seriously, your hypocrisy makes me want to vomit in my shoes.
And they're Prada, for god's sake.

City of Tomorrow Today?? You just set our city back YEARS with your comment! Perhaps you would've preferred no gays or lesbians vote for you. Perhaps you don't even want gays and lesbians to do business in our city or even live here, for that matter. Your comment wasn't an off-handed remark to a friend (still offensive). It was written in a public forum. It's the real you exercising your first amendment right. I find that frightening! This is the real me exercising mine. You need to STEP DOWN. You have embarrassed our city because even though you were not mayor when the comment was made, failing to even attempt an apology now that you ARE mayor is even more unacceptable. This time the comment IS a reflection of the entire city and all of its constituents and you have shed Troy in a terribly negative light. Are you unaware of all the anti-bullying legislation that is taking place? You are not excluded because of the first amendment. This is damaging to our city and its reputation. Even an apology won't erase what's been done. You can't unring a bell. Pointing a finger at 'hate groups' for revealing your undenied comment seems to be a lame attempt to shift the blame. I am not a member of such a hate group. I am an individual who you supposedly represent, except you don't. So save the city further embarrassment and turmoil, STEP DOWN!

You should be ashamed of yourself. You call yourself a public representative?? Fine, you have the right to free speech and to feel how you feel. But haven't you ever heard the phrase "Judge not, lest ye be judged?" Why can't we learn to live and let live, and leave the judgment to the Only One who has the right to do so?? Nobody is being hurt here, we're allowing people to vow a lifetime commitment to the person they love and that is all. Shut your damn mouth and leave it up to God to decide to sanctify the union or not, because we do not have the right!

Janice, you have the right to your opinion on marriage, you don't have the right to force it on others. You are trying to play the victim now, saying that ther are trying to destroy you. Mayor Daniels,
Your personal and private positions on marriage has NOTHING to do with your role as Mayor of Troy. As you are now a public servant, you no longer have the same right to your speech so freely. You need to represent all of us equally and without prejudice. You have your own personal moral platform on issues that don't concern you in your role as Mayor. The fact that you don't think your words are significant means you are not keeping an open mind to your constituents. A tin ear will get you recalled.

When one becomes an important elected official, one needs to take special care not to use vulgar, insulting speech that attacks and hurts an entire community. She is now the mayor of a large, vibrant, cosmopolitan community that has huge diversity. Whether she dislikes Gays, or Muslims, or Asian Americans, or Chaldeans, doesnt matter, but she needs to act like a responsible community leader. Mayor Daniels posted on this comment page defending her stance that she is "morally opposed to gay marriage, which she feels should be between one man and one woman". Wonder why her post is no longer here? She is insane, and the people should know this. Unfortunately, I must admit that this time it is not the fault of the Troy voters (although voter turnout was extremely low) but J. Daniels lied and was completely misleading on her political affiliations (independent my foot!) and her support for the Troy Library (she worked hard to ensure the 3 fake millage proposals were on the ballots to ensure vote confusion, not a straight yes or not vote). And she was well funded by the national tea party. Nobody is slandering her or dragging her through the mud, her own words and "moral compass" will be her demise.

I am a lifelong Troy citizen and am rearing my children here. I'm not so sure all those who voted for Ms. Daniels were duped. While it's very disheartening, I think there are many in Troy who quietly agree with Ms. Daniels her reactionary views. It's truly abhorrent that, instead of apologizing to her outraged constituents for her pre-election hate speech, she cloaks herself in the first amendment and her bible. At best, she is just an ignorant cyber bully. At worst, she is a horrible, shameful example to all of our students of what an elected official is like. I wish the Troy City Council the best of luck managing damage control during this woman's tenure in office - you have your work cut out for you. As for me and my house, we will teach our children NOT to emulate people like Ms. Daniels, to always stand up to bullies and haters in any form, and to vote against bigotry and ignorance every time.

Letter I wrote to the Troy City Council....
I have been mostly silent during this last election season but now I feel that I must let all of you know how I feel.
I would imagine that before this email some of you had no Idea who I am.
I sat in your seats for 18 years from April 1978 to April 1996.
During that time Troy grew up from a small community to a thriving vibrant city.
I was proud to call Troy my home and was proud of the small part that I played in helping to make Troy the great place to live, work and play that it was.
We were know nationally and were a model for many cities to follow in their own growth. Troy was definitely “on the map” of those cities that were nationally known for being fiscally responsible, well planned with great diversity, while maintaining the lowest tax rate of any city in our region. During my 18 years in office we lowered the tax rate almost every year and we were the true Tax Fighters.

During the time that I was on the City Council there were many BIG decisions that had to be made and we made these decisions after great thought and many very heated discussions. We had many 4-3 votes but never the same 4 or 3....we didn’t have factions on the city council until Bob Gosselin and Matt Pryor got elected and from that time on the rancor got worse as time went on. Troy over the years lost its national reputation and at times became a laughing stock and an embarrassment to all who lived here.
Now we have hit an ALL TIME low. We now have a Mayor who is boorish and seems to only want what SHE wants and is hell-bent on ramming these few things through no matter the consequences. The events of this last weekend and the revelation that the Mayor is a bigot and will not even back down when even her friends have abandoned her is the last straw.
I truly believe that Mayor Daniels has lost the ability to govern and should immediately resign and let Troy get on with restoring the pride that it once had. Her attitude that she wants to do things her way no matter what the City Charter says shows her complete lack of understanding of governance.
During her entire term of office any decisions she makes will be viewed under a different light then it would have before the events of this weekend.

I cannot see how a person with such disregard and blatant ignorance could possibly be seen as a leader. If you don't have a basic respect for all people, you are NOT leader material. Everyone does have the right to free speech, but when you are the voice and face of an entire community, that kind of hatred is despicable. An apology at this point would just be a lie, she has already shared her prejudice with the world.

From what I understand, Janice Daniels is active in the PAC "Troy Citizens United" Tea Party rabble which is connected to Woodside Bible church that is actually a fire and brimstone evangelical Baptist church in Troy on Rochester Rd between Square Lake and South Blvd. The church from the very core is deceitful and insincere, in that they changed their longstanding name from Troy Baptist which was down near Big Beaver and Rochester Rd to a generic homogenized name like "Woodside" Now why would they do that? To blend in to their new upscale suburban digs? Nature lovers are they? It should come as no surprise that Janice Daniels would state the hateful things she says because it is in the evangelical ideology. Evangelicals despise homosexuality. Oh they'll say they "love the person just as she has in her half hearted attempt to apologize but I believe Janice Daniels got into the Troy mayors office with these beliefs under the radar and it is all starting to ooze out.
She is going to fold.

My eleven friends and I often take a Friday night and meet up in Troy for dinner and some shopping. I am deeply saddened to read such an offensive, demeaning use of language attributed to the current Mayor or Troy. During the past 25 years of living here, I do not remember another instance of such mocking speech spewed by a public figure. We're not talking the Right to Free Speech, we're talking about kindness, empathy and common decency. This lack of empathy, this me vs. them mentality, does not translate into Leadership.
Your spontaneous comment on a public forum speaks volumes about your character. Whether you support gay marriage is not the issue, rather your apparent lack of civility, your willingness to mock and denigrate others, your snappy, immature grasping for attention, with your quick, little quip, at the expense of a select group. You appear to lack the knowledge to empathize with the documented angst of growing up gay in the USA. Did you not hesitate for even a moment, thinking of how your words would assault and offend others? Where's your humanity, where is your "do unto others..."
To paraphrase you, "The groups that despise me... should start worrying about how they can best work with a new Mayor..." Your statement seems to imply an over blown sense of grandiosity. Truly, you just don't have that much power.
I missed the last election.

No one is suggesting that she does not have a right to her opinion. What people are objecting to is her use of bigoted slurs. As a representative of the community, she has relinquished her right to impose her personal opinions on the community. What she felt in June is her business, but defending it as the mayor of our community in December is our business. Yes, we should be tolerant of opposing views, but not when you are a government official. Then you are speaking for the community. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand this!

Next, the Mayor could be campaigning for marriage as being defined between one man and one woman of the same race. Or she may advocate that bullying is justified if it is backed by moral or religious convictions. She should step down! Clearly, she does not represent the will of the people whom she is supposed to represent. In this regard, she is no different than Gaddafi or Saddam Hussein.

Wow. Who would have known this story would solicit an avalanche of self-righteousness?
It reminds me of the outpouring of support JK Rowling received when she commented that she imagined Dumbledore was gay as she wrote the Harry Potter books. It seems everybody and their cousin took the opportunity to add their support for a gay Dumbledore.
In April 2008 I wrote, "The real benchmark of homosexuality's acceptance into common culture is when remarks such as Rowling's would be otherwise unremarkable."
I hadn't considered what benchmark to use when someone uses the word "queer" as an insult. I suppose we'll know we've accepted gays into the community when a) gays feel secure enough that such slights don't bother them and b) we consider people who use such words in a derogatory way the same way we do Kennedy and moon-landing conspiracy theorists and c) we don't overreact as though we have something to prove or guilty consciences to assuage.
Personally, I found President Obama's "Clinging to guns and religion" comment regarding the residents of a small Pennsylvania town more cause for concern from someone who wanted to be President than a slur made by Troy's mayor who, as far as I've read from the comments, has no GLBT issues on the city agenda.
If there is, she'll have to recuse herself if she hasn't already lost her post by then.

Hey Thomas, perhaps you are not aware of a few years ago when our city council decided that the National Day of Prayer observance in Troy was only for Christians, even though it was created as an event to celebrate all religions. Also once the city council voted on whether or not to approve only straight marriage in Troy, even though that made no sense.
Considering that the mayor refused to give an oath to the Troy City Charter and did not :swear to God" there is no telling what she has up her sleeve.
And if her job is about representing the people of Troy, what are we to do knowing how many of us she clearly despises?
Yuck.

Sharon, there are plenty of people that despise others. From the comments here I can tell there are plenty of people that despise Ms. Daniels right now. Some, apparently, just because of her Tea Party affiliation.
More importantly, I think, is how she acts and treats people she disagrees with, just as I think it's important how everyone treats folks they disagree with in politics, religion, on Facebook, in letters-to-the-editor, and even here in Patch's forums.

In September of this year, you created a post indicating your interest in attaining information on how various school districts handle bullying behavior in their student population. I believe this posting was part of the Patch website. You also state that you have two children, so my assumption is that your interest lies in trying to prevent this type of negative behavior. This is the very type of behavior that most people on this site find offensive. It's not about Free Speech, it's about empathy. It certainly is not about "self-righteousness," it is about good behavior.
Following your line of thought, in achieving benchmarks:
a) "feel secure enough that such slights don't bother them," see how that works for every single slur attached to every single ethnic group.
b))"we consider people who use such words...," so under what category shall we place the Mayor?
c) "we don't over react..." I personally have nothing to prove, nor a guilty conscience. I would not know the Mayor of Troy if she stood before me and am not part of any political organization.
The Mayor's callous, flippant, cute little statement on her Facebook page, has become public. That requires a response, especially on behalf of our young people; an awareness that there are adults that will advocate for them and cherish them. The good behavior of adults is bequeathed to the children, as is the bad behavior. Let's steer them towards goodness.

".. so my assumption is that your interest lies in trying to prevent this type of negative behavior."
Yes and no.
In September I wrote,
"The bully's greatest accomplice is a school system unable or unwilling to expel them for the safety of other students. Bullies are enabled by social workers and administrators more interested in experimenting with bullies to help them find 'more productive outlets" to express their frustrations than kicking, tackling, punching, touching the genitals of or threatening other children.
"And do you know what young children learn from adults? They learn their parents are unable to protect them from daily abuse by other children. They learn that telling teachers or lunch monitors about a boy touching little girls on the playground does nothing to arrest the behavior or remove the culprit. It teaches them that sending the bully to the principal's office accomplishes nothing because the bully will return to class.
"In short, the adults responsible to provide for children's safety turn their backs on the victims so they may trip over their platitudes about misunderstood or disadvantaged bullies."
Children are not equipped to deal with idiots as adults should be.
But that is a different conversation than this, do I'll leave it at that.

When that same mayor was pictured in a campaign flyer touting her pro-life stance, those of us who believed that the issue had no place in a non-partisan civic election were told that of course it did. It was an indication of Janice Daniels' overall moral fiber.
I think her reactions to the discovery of her comments are a pretty clear indication, too, Thomas.

The only thing that matters is the courage, commitment and resolve of decent Troy residents. She was voted in as your Mayor. If you don't like it... do something! I once lived in the Birmingham/Troy area for 4 years and found it to be a great place to live.
I agree, after reading the background regarding the controversy surrounding Janice Daniels, that she should resign for her ignorant and bigotted remarks. She won't do that as she is a member of the TEAPublicans. When I watched the various videos of her listening to comments and during her remarks one can see the look of arrogant self-righeousness on her face. That is her true outlook.
After the disasterous election of November 2010 I must ask how anyone like her could have been elected in 2011? With the horrible example of Governor Snyder?
I now live in Wisconsin and we are now actively collecting the signatures required to trigger a Recall Election to get rid of our disastrous TEAPublican Governor Walker.
You won't be able to actually start your recall untill Daniels has been in office for 6 months. The time to get organized is now. The citizens of Ohio have already done it, Wisconsin took step one and recalled two TEAPublican State Senators and we are now working on getting rid of Walker.
Keep up the pressure on this woman. Protest every time that she shows up in public. Attend the meetings. If you need any help or suggestions I can try and put you touch with people who have done it.

How appalling that anyone would actually advocate a "just get used to it" approach to silencing the pushback against rampant bigotry. Using that logic, if the "N" people would have been just a little more tolerant of poor Bull Connor's attack dogs and fire hoses then we would live in a happy, prosperous
society. What amazes me the most is how very close the rhetoric of Fox News-addled Tea Partiers is to that of white supremacists. If we refuse to learn the hard lessons of history then we are doomed to go down the same path again and again. As a gay person in America I will not participate in a campaign to tolerate evil as something to be "gotten used to."

So think of it like this Thomas. The people of the City of Troy (the school system in your analogy) are more than willing and able to expel the bully (Janice Daniels) because we accept your hypothesis that we shouldn't waste our time trying to experiment with helping her find more productive ways to deal with her frustrations. There is no appropriate time or place for an expression of bigotry by a leader of a multi-racial, multi-ethnic community, whether it be the City of Troy or any other city. A true leader is a person who remembers they serve the people, their consituency, first and foremost. Mayor Daniels has either forgotten this golden rule of leadership, or she had never effectively learned it to begin with; but she is now learning from the voices of the people of her community that no one is served well by a leader whose beliefs and words espouse marginalization of any subset of the population to whom they are responsible. A mere apology is a woefully insufficient plea for absolution in this instance, and will not suffice; only full accountability and remediation to the people of the City of Troy, as well as to the GLBT community in general, can begin to repair and heal the damage. I think resignation from her position as mayor should be only a beginning step, to be followed by a considerable and protracted period of voluntary community service towards the people she has aggrieved.

Hatred and degradation of other human beings has no place whatsoever in civil government. None. Even if a civil servant hates a group of people enough to deny them a basic civil right such as marriage, she should at least have the good judgment and decency to keep nasty slurs to herself and phrase her opinion in standard spoken English. Since she has now revealed herself to be the kind of person who is so disconnected from how decent people conduct themselves, she should resign.

@Therese... I haven't seen any "trashing" of "Tea Partyer" on this lengthy thread. I have seen remarks referring to them and have made several myself. The remarks are quite descriptive of the behavior of this group since they were created from pure astroturf. The consistently play "victim" whenever their own words are played back to them and questioned. They consistently find a group or groups to attack and then deny it when they are called on it.

You are allowed your beliefs, but it is not within the Mayor's job description to bring her personal beliefs into her job. She was elected to be our Mayor, not our Minister.
Neither you nor the Mayor will change the beliefs of others on this issue, which can only divide the city. Even thinking the Mayor should hold her views on this publicly is rediculous and a total waste of the People's time, because we have important Troy business to do.

There's only ONE god, and he's coming one day for the final judgement of this world, and the gays are most likely to suffer, as they are breaking Gods law as simple as that. If anything is going down throats, it's most likely yours, as you seem to be so upset with my comment, and no .I have been married for 41 yrs. to the same woman I met a long time ago, and have children the proper way, and they have their children the proper way, with not having to worry about having to lie to themselves........

Bill, that is just fine for you, but that belief set has nothing to do with the business of the People of the City of Troy! Our Mayor needs to know the difference.

Bill, and you are not adding to the conversation of the central issue, which is the Mayor no longer has the total freedom of speech she had before taking the position of Mayor of ALL of the People of Troy, regardless of her personal, private beliefs.

Bill, Look at yourself in the mirror for a minute as Jesus would have us do. One could say the same for you, but that would be a personal slam. You and I show our lesser side when we do personally slam each other. The only thing we need to agree on, is that the Mayor is the Mayor of all of us, with the responsibility of managing the business of the City. She is not our moral leader. We need to keep the social moral issues out of the business of the City of Troy. She can show here leadership by keeping her personal beliefs out of the conversation. Anyone in the position of Mayor needs to err on the side of keeping personal morals OUT of the conversation. Being pro-gay or anti-gay is personal choice, not the business of the city. If any ONE of our Troy residents is being bullied for ANY reason, then we should put a stop to it. We are all equal in the City of Troy and our common moral stand is for fairness.

She expressed an opinion on a valid observation that HIV/Aids has been endemic with the gay community and pointed out the danger affiliated with them. So now she faces political crucifixion for stating the truth? The over whelming comments against her are proof of a social order in the process of rapid degradation. You people can condemn me and people like this mayor but you cannot change the laws of nature and no man made law can change it
She is indeed the mayor of all of us and certainly part of her duty is to warn her constituents of all possible dangers whether they like it or not.

Unfortunately, no one warned Troy about ignorance.

Mayor Daniels, You are an American speaking your mind and I applaud you. You did say that you might have chosen different words if you had it to do over again. Hey, I've been there, and so have most folks. Keep your courage up against the 'gay' agenda that seeks (whether consciously or not) to destroy our Judeo-Christian culture. You are in my prayers!

Escalonz and Pedro Domingo,
We are ALL Americans here!! Regardless of our positions!!! Don't forget that or denigrate your fellow citizens. I support that what you and the Mayor believe is good for you and she personally, but I have to say, the Mayor is neither our minister nor an medical expert and should not be espousing or promoting her moral beliefs or medical advice in her role as Mayor. None of this is in her job description. If she were to stick to the issues of managing (not ministering to) the City, she will stay out of trouble. But apparently, her social fundamentalist beliefs are blinding her to this essential understanding of her role in the public sphere. Regardless of our own personal religious beliefs, we should condemn any Mayor for stepping out of the defined role of that position, including you. We all have our personal religious institutions and beliefs, but when a person enters a job that represents all people of the city, they must leave their proselytizing at home.
The two of you do the city no good by supporting her professionally irresponsible behavior. In fact, you are aiding in the unnecessary and divisive conversation. Shame on you.

It is actually "The LADY doth protest too much, methinks", not "thou".
Are you suggesting that the people with objections are actually gay? Or, are you suggesting the people advocating freewill really seek control? Either way, here's a better one...
