Letter to Editor: Support Troy Library

Residents of the City of Troy,

opened their Troy campus in October of 2003.  We are proud to have chosen Troy as our location in the southeast Michigan region.  One of the reasons that we’re so pleased to call Troy home is the value that Troy residents place upon education, in the form of excellent K-12 schools, institutions of higher learning, and their library.  Lifelong learning is a pursuit that is near and dear to the hearts of our students, faculty, and staff.

It’s within this context that I write in support of continued funding for the Troy library.  It is an investment in the continued growth of residents and an investment in our children’s futures.  Continued funding of the library is a commitment from Troy residents that regardless of what economic conditions exist, we believe that education and lifelong learning are core to our community.  With the projections from Oakland County, it will be a long road ahead of us until the city realizes property tax revenues that are comparable to the middle of last decade.  During these challenging times, we must continue to provide funding for positive quality of life influences such as the services provided by a viable city library.

As a supporter of lifelong learning and higher education, we feel so strongly about this issue and appeal to all Troy residents to support our children’s future by voting YES for the .7 dedicated library millage that will be on ballots August 2, 2011.  It is critical to the future of Troy, it is critical to the future of our children, and it is crucial to lifelong learning that the city continues to have a fully functional resource library for all.
