Letter to the Editor: 'I Support the Recall of Mayor Janice Daniels'

"For too long, we’ve been victim of political shenanigans by those seeking to forward an extreme ideology," Troy resident Sue Martin writes.

Dear Editor:

In recent months, the citizenry of Troy has been gradually more engaged in sincere dialogue regarding our city.  For too long, we’ve been victim of political shenanigans by those seeking to forward an extreme ideology.

The recall effort mounted against Troy Mayor Janice Daniels was borne out of a frustration with that, and the overwhelming majority of informed Troy residents are ready to restore a healthy balance back to our city.

And let us be clear: a RECALL is our right under the state constitution.  It gives the voters the chance to further participate in our local political process by choosing to remove or retain this mayor based on tangible evidence of her performance – not just the empty promises of a political campaign.  It allows all of us residents the opportunity to make our voices heard now that we have a more clear vision of Daniels’ true intentions and behavior.

Recalls do not require proof of misconduct; rather, they are the legitimate tool of the electorate to express dissatisfaction with incompetency, ineptitude and overbearing partisanship. I support the recall of Mayor Janice Daniels.

Sue Martin
Troy Resident

Sue ........ Very well said. The thousands of signatures received by the reacall group support your comments. The demographics of those signatures indicate a broad support for the recall. All 31 precincts provided hundreds of signatures. Known Republican and Democratic precincts were equally strong. The petitions include hundreds of signatures from admitted Tea Party members who voted for her. A few even stating how they regretted their financial contribution to Daniels earlier campaign. Every age category from 18 to 94 spoke loudly. This is about respect for people, quality leadership, team building, a knowledge of city finances and honesty in communications. Janice Daniels has let us all down. Let's work to restore Troy.

Sue...very poorly said. It is utterly ridiculous of you to imply that the people of Troy were somehow not afforded an opportunity to have their voices heard. That's what the election was for...or didn't you learn that in civics class?

The recall effort is clearly an attempt to undo a lawfully certified election because a small group of overly-liberal-minded malcontents don't like the policies of the winner.

You, and your ilk, should crawl back into the woodwork from whence you came, and perhaps re-educate yourself while you're there.

Randy,

Sue clearly stated that the recall vote is appropriate because the voters now have a clearer picture of what Ms. Daniels is all about. "It allows all of us residents the opportunity to make our voices heard now that we have a more clear vision of Daniels’ true intentions and behavior."

And I don't understand your problem with using a lawful procedure provided for in the state constitution to remove the Mayor. Is the original election somehow more powerful or binding than a recall election? Both carry equal weight by my non-scholarly review of the law. Simply getting elected doesn't absolutely guarantee the position for the entire term of office. The people reign supreme in this Republic, not elected officials.

Oh, and as one of Sue's "ilk", I refuse to "crawl back into the woodwork" anytime soon. But thanks for the offer!

In my view, the voters of Troy were misled. Now they have seen the truth. Trust me. This is a lawful process. The participants in this process cannot be characterized as "liberal" or "malcontents". They are citizens. We'll see what "ilk" will crawl back into the woodwork.

Um...Randy more people signed the lawful recall petition than voted to elect Janet Daniels are they all "overly-liberal-minded malcontents"? Even the people who voted for her who feel misled? Or the "tea party" members?

Wake up. The recall is about what she has said and done. It isn't a liberal/conservative issue.

You and your ilk could use a civility class.

Randy,

Your sarcastic tone gives a great impression. Did you ever learn how to give your opinion in a respectable way so that maybe someone would listen? Or do you just consider it fact and ram it down someone's throat. I think that is the norm lately for JD and "her ilk."

I totally support the Recall of Janice Daniels.

Sue Martin and the other 'Recall Janice Daniels' volunteers should be commended for all of their hard work in behalf of the citizens of Troy. They have done their part, and now it's up to us come this November.

When it comes time to cast your vote in November, all you REALLY need to know about Janice Daniels is reflected in her statement she delivers at nearly every City Council Meeting.

Before Daniels votes on an important issue, she proudly declares that the reason behind her vote is to support those citizens that voted for her in the election. Seriously?

I thought as mayor, you are sworn to represent the best interests of ALL of the citizens of Troy, NOT just those who voted for you. What's so sad is she truly believes that is her function.

Yes, sadly this is Janice Daniels....YOUR mayor!

So this won’t cost the taxpayers anything? How much time will the city clerk and attorney spend studying it?

“According to the charter, in the absence of the mayor, the mayor pro tem assumes responsibilities. Beyond that, the city attorney and I would need to do an analysis to determine what would happen next.” Troy City Clerk Aileen Bittner

How much will get accomplished by the council during the time when there is a 3-3 tie? Will this unify our town? I doubt it.

The petition Matt Binkowski is so proud of circulating is itself filled with half-truths. Quoting a partial sentence is worse than quoting out of context; it is a deliberate lie in my book.

Do you think posting the same thing on multiple threads make you less wrong?

Oh, goody, Dale is linking to his inaccurate blog post again. Go read the comments there, everyone. I refute his points. He refuses to admit he's wrong. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Repeating misinformation has worked in the past. That's over. How much will get accomplished? How about how much damage will be prevented? The "misleading petitions" were not filed by Matt Binkowski. They were submitted by JD cronies.

Abbey, I don't think you refuted my points; I'll let the readers decide. Just trying to provide some balance to the conversation. Seems to be mostly one-sided against the mayor lately.
