Poll: 72 Percent of Troy Voters Would Support Recalling Mayor Daniels
A political consulting firm surveyed residents in automated telephone interviews Thursday.
Nearly three-quarters of Troy voters would support recalling Mayor Janice Daniels from office, according to a poll released Friday by a Lansing-based consulting firm.
The poll, conducted by Main Street Strategies and commissioned by the website Michigan Liberal, suggests that 72 percent of voters want to oust Daniels.
“Mayor Daniels has given the voters of Troy the biggest case of buyer’s remorse I have ever seen,” Main Street Strategies consultant Joe DiSano said in a press release. "Mayor Daniels’ Tea Party agenda has polarized the voters of Troy. Her repeated attacks on gays have badly damaged her public standing and voters clearly regret supporting her last fall."
Daniels has received public criticism for anti-gay comments she made on her Facebook page in 2011. She was also bashed for her five-page position paper in which she expressed opposition to the transit center project and slammed City Manager John Szerlag, saying she had no confidence in his ability to perform his duties. Szerlag released a response earlier this week rebutting several statements the mayor made in her paper. Daniels has also criticized city workers for reading her mail.
Councilman Wade Fleming said Friday he was remaining nuetral in the public's opposition to the mayor and that a recall is in the voters' hands.
"I wouldn’t put a lot of confidence in polls," Fleming said. "I put my confidence in the voters, if they decide they want to elect someone else or recall her."
Daniels did not return a phone call from the Troy Patch on Friday.
The Main Street Strategies poll results are based on 599 automated telephone interviews of voters who participated in the November election. The voters were surveyed Thursday evening.
Several Troy Patch readers have engaged in coversation about the poll on the Facebook Page.
"I really hope this becomes a wake-up call to the city, if it isn't one already," Jonathan Barr wrote. "Voting matters."
"Unfortunately, we must wait six months from the date of her election to begin a recall," Barbara Koehn wrote. "I don't believe she will resign, I don't believe she thinks she is doing the city harm and further more, I was not contacted for the poll, but I would have voted for a recall."

Of course there is buyer remorse. Troy voters need to get themselves informed on local issues before they vote . Troy voters need to vote in local elections. Ms Daniels
was election on ~13% of the vote . Only ~ around 25% voted in this election. We could save money on repeat elections , if people did not always have remorse for not voting or voting ill-informed/uninformed on the issues . That is why it took 3 votes for people to vote to keep the library open . The next issue is that a very vocal and minority group need to stop telling untruths to the citizens.

Ms Lucille, with all he time you spend on writing to Patch against Ms Daniels, the
Transit, you could have a real job or at least do volunteer work. I have never seen
anymore spend more time than on this paper. To me, you like saying mean things about people and things, you never say anything good about anything - you must be
a very lonely person. I feel sorry for you that you have to find friends on this paper.

Great point! If only Patch would have spent a tenth as much time covering the election as it has spent covering Daniels' antics, we'd be much more informed for the election. Her idiotic Facebook post was there for all to see prior to the election. Where was the local media? Isn't that what Patch is supposed to be doing?
In the category of "you don't miss it until it's gone," those of us who feel that we shouldn't have to pay a fee to read news stories are not paying for it nonetheless as an uneducated electorate.

FYI! Not everyone is in support of the transit center. It is a waste of the taxpayers money and it isn't going to make a big difference for this city. We need a reason for people to come to the city and just because you have a $6 million dollar bus stop isn't a reason. Granted the money is being given to the city but it is still coming out of tax payer dollars. I just hope now that it has passed that the Troy Chamber of Commerce will hold up to their end of the bargain and pay for all costs pertaining to the upkeep of this facility. If not, I will be moving out of Troy.

Ms Firelight , It is a principle of discourse that if you want someone to listen to what you are saying you reveal who you are. It is hard to accept that you do not want what you say respected if you spent time to write it. I do not disrespect you because I do not know you. I can only respect or disrespect what you write . Is it thoughtful , is it in focus with the discourse , is it civil ? Does it make sense with all the other things you wrote etc etc . Sorry I do mean to respect you .

Ms Daniels is doing to Troy. She gave her son to the Marines, did you do anything
for your country???????

@ Audre It is insulting to her son's bravery and service to this country for you to package it as "she gave her son to the Marines". It is shockingly narcissistic. He deserves the honor and ALL the credit for his decision and self sacrifice. It is NOT for you to transfer that honor to anybody else... and to then try to shame someone else by asking a question such as "did you do anything for your country?". Honestly, how dare you?

I am counting the minutes when I can sign the petition to recall her. She is most likely the rudest, arrogant, bias opinionated and obnoxious public official I have witnessed. This is a prime example of a person serving themselves and not the will of the people.

We just got rid of the worst who was in office.
Dont tell me it is 75%, outright lie, must be from the people who remained.
This is freedom of speech, you people who are out there being holy holy, get off your butts and find a job or something worthwhile to do.
I see nothing wrong in what she said.
FREEDOM OF SPEECH
These type of people are such a minority so why let then push people around.
Mayor Daniels, hold your head up high look them in the eye with a smile on your face.

Ms VanThomme , May you please learn that our constitution freedom of speak is giving the citizens free speech from the government . She is now the government !. She no longer has free speech against her citizens nor can she punish them for what they say. Furthermore she is required to be open and honest in her actions as mayor . Her e mails seem to indicate she has not been honest in things she has said about the transit center messages from the citizens .

Janice Daniels is a dangerous homophobe who should have been removed from office after she posted here ridiculous anti-gay comments on Facebook. She harbors nothing but hatred for a sizable community of her own constituents (you think Troy doesn't have an LGBT community? Think again.). Freedom of speech? More like freedom to spew hatred and misinformation. She needs to be exiled. Preferably to The Castro where maybe she may learn a lesson in compassion (or at least get kissed by a girl).

Ms Van Thomme , WHOA !!!~ Your last sentence tells me how very uninformed you are about the gay community .First lesson : If one deals with data to make their decisions they would have every reason to believe ~ 10% of the Troy community are gay . That is because census research in all types of communities all over the world and over time. strongly suggests that there is a ~ 10% homosexual population in every society across the world and across time . Now there is other messages in that constant census finding but the message you need to be aware of in the future . That is that ~ 10% of Troy citizens are gay . That is hardly a small minority .
Second lesson : It is immaterial how small that gay population is in Troy . Have you ever heard that she must represent all citizens in Troy ? Have you ever heard that a principle of the democracy is " majority rules ,minority has rights .
Third lesson : All human beings are entitled to respect and dignity.
Fourth lesson : Always ask yourself " Would I like to be treated that way ?" If you lhad done that regardless of your data knowledge you would of not made the last horrendous statement.

I'll say it here and everywhere I can comment freely... "Janice Daniels, you're an elected official whose homophobic actions and statements are unwelcome to a sizable enough portion of your electorate that you should not only be removed from office, you should be tarred and feathered and run out of town on a rail.

Who you like and who you do not like has nothing to do with it . All human beings need to be treatedwith respect and dignity . Whoa , you really do have a comphrension problem . The number of gays in the USA is also ~10% . That is not a small minority . Furthermore if it is 1/100th of 1% the mayor is required to treat them with respect and dignity . She has not done, is a very important issue for a government employee . ? Are you aware that in almost all palces of employment one would be fired with cause for speaking as she has to the gay community and city employees ? It is no small deal . She needs to learn that issue and behave like a victim, she needs to change how she acts.

Quit putting a spin on everything that is being done. There are sore losers in the city. Sorry. Someone has to lose. We don't need an outsider dong a survey, which you can't believe anyways. Go face to face with the Troy taxpayers and see how disgusted they are with this petty garbage. Mrs. Daniels comments were on facebook, before she ran for mayor. The comments were absolutely offensive, but at least she didn't pretend to be something or say something that only pleased the people just to be elected. You can't change someones feeling just because they are what they are. There are many derogative statements made about different races and etc. It shouldn't be but it is. We have freedom of speech. But, that has nothing to do with working for the city taxpayer. Troy was a laughing stock before the election and now the people that lost is keeping the ball rolling. Get over it and try to get Troy a good place to work and live. The council members that don't like her and the city manager that doesn't like her, we don't care. I(f you had a private boss you would have been fired. The city manager can do what he should be doing, living in retirement with the citizens tax dollars. He is double dipping, so respect yourself and get a retired life. The council members can learn to work with who was elected and if not, resign. Quit forcing your opinions down our throat and do something for the people instead of acting like sore losers and school children.

Ms Roboy , This country was founded on the princilpes of a government for the people and by the people . It gave us free speech against the government without punishment or making them silent . I learn much from these blogs even when you are on the opposite opinion from me. That does not make me call you a sore loser or any other name. because my courses in logic tell me that neither you or I cannot know that from this blog who is a sore loser .
It would be better if everyone use this discourse to echange ideas supported with data and reason . Calling people things you cannot know to be true is name calling .
Is not name calling in part why many of us are upset with the mayor? Lets show everyone we can have a infomation exchange with civility . thank you. .

So Jane, we should accept your opinions? This has nothing to do with sore losers. Obviously, you are missing the point. Janice Daniels started all of this long before she got elected. Look at her histrionics at City Council meetings. Unfortunately many bought into her rhetoric and believed she was "for the people" of Troy. Fat chance! She is only for herself, her ideology, and those who pull her strings. Do your homework.

There is no way that an authentic poll can come up with 72% of the Troy electorate being against Daniels, if only because far from that number even know who the mayor is, let alone the circumstances leading hot-blooded liberals to think they can recall her. I voted for her and am disappointed how she has handled some things since being sworn in, but that is a far cry from saying should be recalled at this point.
As for her comments to students at the meeting at Troy High: It was wrong for her to introduce any psychological or psychiatric aspects to the issue of homosexuality. We still do not know definitively what causes sexual orientation. More to the point, she only placed the liberals (and gays) in a defensive posture, which accomplishes nothing. There is a similar sort of "defense" discovered some years ago at Gallaudet University in DC, the "university of the deaf," so to speak. It was discovered that many on that campus had strong negative responses to deaf individuals who expressed wishes that they could hear or were thinking of seeking medical attention in an attempt to cure or lessen their deafness. This phenomenon has been found in other communities of the deaf as well--no, not everywhere.
Daniels must adopt a more proactive style for herself, use better judgment, and keep a smile on her face, althewhile talking up solid conservative responses to address city issues. In short, she should imitate Katie Curic in style but not in substance.
