Recall Janice Daniels Kicks Off Fundraising; Troy Mayor Also Seeks Donations

Voters in Troy will decide on Nov. 6 whether to recall Troy Mayor Janice Daniels.

The group Recall Janice Daniels, which hopes to recall Troy Mayor Janice Daniels on Nov. 6, officially kicked off fundraising efforts Sunday at an event held at Joe Kool's in Troy. Tickets were $25 each, though donations can also be made on the group's website.

Meanwhile, on her personal website, Daniels has also been collecting monetary donations to fight the recall effort against her. A statement on the site reads:

You may have read that there is a small group of citizens who have filed a petition attempting to remove me from office after only four months into my first four year term. Although this is a legal option within the American system, we believe that if we could all work together we could achieve great outcomes in Troy. I was elected by the majority of the voters in Troy to address fiscal transparency and integrity in budgeting.

I ask each of you to join me in our effort to help unite us to create a better place to live, work and play.

Please donate today to help me fight this recall effort.

The Recall Janice Daniels group is far from a small group. The attendance at Joe Kool's last evening evidenced that this group continues to grow, and new people continue to join the effort. Thank you to Janice for doing our job for us.

A small group? Is 8,800+ recall signatures small? How about the stream of criticism from City employees and other elected City officials? How about the criticism from Gov. Snyder? Brooks Patterson? the youth of our community? the State Executive Director of Civil Rights? (who said Troy has become Xenophobic!) What about the President of the Oakland County Chinese/American Association on Asian/American Affairs? The Michigan Chairman of the Council on Asian/American Affairs? What about the Troy Chamber of Commerce. Janice Daniels has blatantly ignored and/or insulted everyone associated with these groups.

She was elected to represent all residents of our City. She is delusional, thinking she is doing that. And she remains delusional to think she can promote and even try to dictate her personal political agenda at the sacrifice of everything that is great about our City. Finally, she is delusional on our City Budget, proclaiming more untruths than truths and displaying a total ignorance about City finances.

I wrote my check yesterday in support of her recall, as did hundreds of others. She must be removed.

Thanks for a balanced article, Jen. It will be interesting to see what happens between now and November as money is raised and spent on both sides for this extra election. The mayor has to defend her seat against an unknown challenger after one year instead of four.

Dale,

What extra election? The recall is part of this November's ballot. In 2013, there will be a council election, so I don't see where you think there is an "extra election." Please do not try to again confuse voters. Let's give it to them straight for a change. The truth is there is NO EXTRA ELECTION.

@Dale

Why do you insist on perpetuating an untruth? There is no "extra election" being held for the recall of the mayor. The recall proposal will appear on the November ballot with all the other candidates, millages and proposals that would normally appear in an election year. And it will not cost anything extra for the taxpayers beyond what it normally costs to hold a scheduled election in an election year.

No untruth. It is an extra election for her, three years early, with the extra expenses that go with any political campaign. It doesn’t cost the taxpayers much extra, but it costs both campaigns a lot of unnecessary expense.

So far I haven’t heard anyone nominated to replace her, so if the people of Troy vote Yes, they are voting for an unknown candidate to be chosen by a divided council in November if she is recalled. That may be satisfying for the Anybody But Daniels people, but most citizens would want to know who is going to replace her, I’d guess.

The recall is absolutely necessary in my opinion and in the opinions of apparently a rather large number of people. My donations to the recall campaign have been my pleasure to make. Money extremely well spent.

She is not defending her seat against an unknown opponent. She is trying to keep a position a lot of people don't think she should have anymore because of the things she did while in office.

Dale - I appreciate the opportunity to correct you for the third time. It makes it very easy for me to just copy and paste from a previous discussion thread when you bring up the same tired inaccuracies.

The city council DOES NOT choose a mayor within 30 days. The Mayor Pro Tem becomes mayor until a new one is elected in the next election. The rest of the council would be choosing a new interim council member within 30 days. At the next regular election, the new mayor would be ELECTED and the Mayor Pro Tem would go back to being Mayor Pro Tem. In a weak mayor structure, it is a small distinction from a voting standpoint...but it is a huge distinction in that the mayoral position is the one the is looked at as the city's ambassador.

I actually think the idea that Council members will collectively select an interim Council Member could be a great thing for everyone. Because the council has been somewhat divided down the middle, it would force them to find someone that is truly non-partisan. I believe that without the mayor getting in the way, that the rest of council will find a way to work together better. This was on display during the budget sessions when the rest of the council found a way to work together and compromise (while the mayor say quietly by while the adults worked).

Dale,Dale,Dale...intentional ignorance. You are smarter than all the word drama you endorse. Don't debate......You've lost credibility. Find comfort in knowing there are MANY QUALIFIED, educated residents that will serve the community with pride and commitment.

@Dale

The "unnecessary expense" of recalling the mayor could have been avoided if she wasn't so incompetent. She continually sticks by her rigid ideology even in the face of expert testimony and facts that are contrary to her agenda. Every day that Janice Daniels is in office she puts her political and personal agenda ahead of the well-being and prosperity of Troy. Her words and actions have polarized this community. She and her Tea Party cohorts are a menace to Troy. We refuse to put up with her shenanigans for another 3 years. That is why more than 8,000 Troy residents – more than voted for her – are working so hard to RECALL JANICE DANIELS!

CC, the way I read what you posted from the Charter is if Mayor Daniels is recalled, Maureen McGinnis becomes mayor and the council picks a new interim mayor within 30 days who serves until November 2013. The November 2013 mayoral election will be for a two year term instead of four. The vacant office is mayor, not council member.

Maybe we should ask the city attorney to give her opinion, since it’s not clear to me and you read it differently.

Could you please post Section 6.2? It might shed light on whether the mayor leaves office immediately or when the new interim mayor (or council member) is installed (if Mayor Daniels is recalled).

Section 3.8
"In the absence or disability of the Mayor, the Mayor Protem shall perform the duties of Mayor."
Section 6.7 - Filling Vacancies in Elective Office:
"City Council shall fill vacancies of an elective office that are declared vacant pursuant to Section 6.2 within 30 days by a majority vote of the remaining members of the Council, said appointee to hold office until the successor takes office, the election of which shall be on the next November or even-year August Election date."
