Week 1 winner: Evan Katz cooling off in the sprinklers. / Judge's comment: "I am struck by the beauty of the photo, then a closer look reveals the surprise and delight on the boy's face as the water hits his body."

What's better on a hot Michigan day than cooling off with a run through a sprinkler?

That's what Evan Katz did and the expressive photo of him doing so wins the first week of the Your Patch of Michigan 2012 photo contest.

The photo was submitted by Evan's mom, Addy Seligman Katz of West Bloomfield. "It was taken Friday of Memorial Day weekend outside my house," Seligman Katz said. Evan is 8 1/2 years old and goes to Lone Pine Elementary, heading to West Hills Middle School in the fall.

Seligman Katz's entry was selected out of more than 170 wonderful photos submitted for the week of May 24-June 3. Seligman Katz wins a $50 gift certificate to Katherine Lynn Salon in Troy.

You, too, can share your visions of Michigan in photos in our Your Patch of Michigan photo contest.

Every week through Labor Day we'll have a new photo gallery and a new winner chosen by a panel of Michigan Patch editors. Each weekly winner will get a prize worth roughly $50.

After Labor Day, we'll pick a grand prize winner from all of the weekly winners. The grand prize winner will receive a certificate for a two-night stay at Mission Point Resort on Mackinac Island (to be used before Oct. 31, 2013, and blackout dates and other restrictions may apply). The approximate retail value of the Grand Prize is $600.

Do you need to be Ansel Adams to win this? No. The single qualification for photos you send is that they say "Michigan" to you.

How to enter Your Patch of Michigan contest

Here's how you can enter: To add your own images, first, become a registered Patch user if you aren't already; just sign up at the top right corner of the homepage of this website. Then add your photo(s) to the gallery for the week of June 4-10.

In the photo caption area, be sure to include your real, full name and the place where the photo was taken, as well as any other relevant information about the photo. The email address you use to register with Patch must be a working one so we can reach you should we have questions or should you be selected as a winner.

Each week, we'll have a new gallery and a new winner.

All photos must be posted by midnight each Sunday to be judged for that week. The second week's photos will be judged from June 4-10.

The contest is open to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia who are 18 and older. Great picture! Again reminding me of the waste of not having a downtown park with splash pad type fountain. The perfect place would be in front of, or adjacent to the Memorial in the library -Stardream-memorial park that has only a pitiful few benches. It can be tastefully done and and be a beautiful adjunctive tribute to the memorial for those who died our right to live and play in freedom. As it is adults take the kids to the memorial and the kids play on it. Kids are kids. This little park could be a major attraction for the Farmer's market with its neglected weed garden, the library, and yes even downtown businesses that take more than they give to the residents of Royal Oak. Anyone out there agree, please comment here and at a council meeting.
