Did you know Troy-based Behr has a climatic wind tunnel? And that the Bank of America building on Big Beaver is a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) registered building?

Troy is full of little-known and interesting facts about its many businesses, and the Troy Chamber of Commerce is asking Troy Patch readers for help uncovering those secrets for its annual "Troy Portfolio" membership directory.

"I have all sorts of historical and demographic info," said Deb DePue, director of Marketing and Communications for the Troy Chamber of Commerce, "but I am looking for the interesting, truly unique features that set us apart from our neighboring communities."

Whether it's a neat recycling project at your Troy office, a restaurant that is featuring local artists' paintings, or perhaps a business that has been owned by the same family for generations, we want to know about the little things that set the Troy business community apart from our neighbors.

And if the Troy Chamber uses your comment or photo, your name will appear in their annual publication, the Troy Portfolio, which is printed every January and distributed to all members of the Chamber.

Here's how you can contribute:

I love that so many businesses exhibit artwork from Troy students. Caribou at 16/Crooks is one, and there is TSD art on display right now in the lobby of the Michigan Schools & Government Credit Union. Very cool :)

That's great! You should write something about Jazz the Paint Source Cat, too. I think Jazz is pretty unique!

Yes! We also have a Store Cat, who I'm pretty sure has more fans that me and Rob combined. He has his own Facebook page, Jazz The Paint Source Cat. Customers come in somtimes JUST to give him treats.... he sleeps in a box of paint brushes when he feels like it... he's a rascal in general. But it is nice having a companion at work, especialy when our shifts don't overlap and you're alone at work. better than talking to yourself! lol

I love the fact that Troy does not have a comprehensive set of pedestrian walkways to get around the city. I am always amazed that sidewalks end for no particular reason, so that when you are riding a bike or walking you need to go "cross-country". And, this is most prevalent along side of the busiest city streets. I am particularly pleased that crosswalk indicators at stop lighted intersection never say "Walk" until you press that darned button and wait through a full light cycle of about three or four minutes to be able to cross at an intersection. To me that just screams "Take a car around Troy if you want to be able to see the city."

Many years ago Yamasaki came up with a plan for Troy, based on a ring road. Of course the short sighted powers that were back then dismissed it. You might want to see if you can find any information about it. I believe he did this because the widening of Big Beaver would cause one of his favorite trees to be lost in the road construction, so he tried to provide Troy with something a bit innovative. Too bad.

Eva, Did you know that Yamasaki designed the Ford & Earl building in Troy? That's the only Yamasaki connection I was aware of, but this is something to look into.

Ford and Earl building originally was the HQ for Yamasaki. That building is on my "when I win the big Lotto I'm going to buy...." list!!! I would like to turn it into a small business incubator along with an office for the Michigan Small Business Technology and Development Center. Another item on the list is to put a sprinkler system in the boulevard from Rochester Road to Dequindre along with plantings like the "west" end of Troy. Automation Alley should have a better approach from both directions along Big Beaver, IMO. (As usual the "east" end of Troy is forgotten).

I love that so many Troy businesses are owned by life-long or long-time Troy residents. I try to support these "mom and pop" venues when I can vs. shopping at big box retailers (though I'll support most any Troy business over another local municipality if I can!). For example. Trevarrow Hardware has been a mainstay for as long as I can remember. The employees are always eager to help. And Oakland Hills Veterinary Hospital is run by Dr. Kathy Christy, a Troy resident who grew up here and moved her family back to our city. There's no more nurturing, caring or qualified vet around! Plenty more businesses to honor, I'm sure.

Della's Maple Lane Florist just gave away 400 dozen roses on Good Neighbor Day, Sept 5th. I posted it to the Troy Patch wall, actually for both of my stores. The other store is Accent Florist, also in Troy. Every few days or week, we ask our fans on Facebook to nominate someone who needs a pick me up, and we send them a beautiful bouquet of flowers. We are a family business that has been in Troy since 1948. In fact we are not allowed to pave our dirt parking lot, because of the zoning and regulations that have gone on around us, since we have been there since 15 mile was 2 lanes and also a dirt road. We also support our community & schools with donations, whenever possible. We love Troy!

This isn't a historical fact, but it's a funny story. A couple years ago I went into Kelly's Karamels at Long Lake and Livernois. It had just opened. I sampled a couple caramels and struck up a conversation with the owner. Turns out we knew each other from high school marching band--I was in the colorguard at Troy High and her son was a percussionist at Athens at the same time, and we had run into each other at a game once.

Small worlds aside, those caramels are awesome and I highly recommend them :)
