TCC to Celebrate 'Family Day' with Local Food Discounts

The Troy Community Coalition is helping Troy families participate in Family Day, which launched in 2001 to promote regular family meals.

Troy merchants are partnering with the Troy Community Coalition to offer special discounts to help promote and celebrate Family Day - A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children – on Monday, Sept. 24.

More than a decade of research by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University has consistently found that the more often kids eat dinner with their families, the less likely they are to smoke, drink or use drugs.

CASAColumbia's Family Day is a national movement launched in 2001 that promotes the parental engagement fostered during frequent family dinners as a simple, effective way to prevent substance abuse in Kids.

“If I could wave a magic wand to make a dent in our nation’s substance abuse problem, I would make sure that every child in America had dinner with his or her parents at least five times a week," said Joseph A. Califano Jr., CASA Columbia Founder and Chairman Emeritus.

For the past ten years, the following area merchants have helped the Troy Community Coalition commemorate Family Day:

Hollywood Market
Nino Salvaggio International Marketplace
Papa Romano’s Pizza (3065 Crooks and 5399 Crooks Road)
Bangkok Bistro
Noodles and Company

Each business will offer $5 off a $25 food purchase. To access these discounts, download the Family Day flyer from the Coalition’s website or print the PDF file in this story.

Troy Community Coalition Executive Director Nancy Morrison stressed the event's importance.

“Substance abuse touches us all," she said. "This Family Day, sit down to dinner with your children and talk to them about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.”

My family always ate together. Dinner was served at 6:30 every evening, just as Wheel of Fortune was coming on. It was often the only time we'd all be in the same room together that day, and it gave us a chance to communicate and catch up. I have great memories of that.

Thank you to the Troy Community Coalition and participating businesses for promoting Family Day :)

Just like you, our family of 10 all ate dinner together in our dining room every evening when I was growing up, oh so long ago. Same thing for Sunday breakfasts. My wife and I and our kids also always ate dinner together every evening, even after both of us working a full day. Meals together were always important, and like you said, provided for great memories!

Family of 10? Wow! It's great that you had that tradition, too, and how wonderful that you passed it on to your own kids, despite having a busy schedule. Good for you!
