Troy Fire Chief Bill Nelson Honored at 9/11 Ceremony in Lansing
Troy Fire Chief Bill Nelson and his wife, Doris, were guests of Rep. Marty Knollenberg (R-Troy) at Tuesday's event.
The following information was supplied by the Michigan House Republican Communications.
The Michigan House of Representatives on Tuesday hosted a ceremony honoring first responders and members of the military from Michigan who died in the line of duty in 2011-12.
State Rep. Marty Knollenberg (R-Troy) attended the ceremony with his guests, Troy Fire Chief Bill Nelson, who was recently named Michigan Fire Chief of the Year, and Chief Nelson's wife, Doris Nelson. Chief Nelson was awarded Michigan Fire Chief of the Year based on his accomplishments and contributions to the fire service throughout his career.
"It was an honor to have Michigan Fire Chief of the Year Bill Nelson with me to be honored at the ceremony," Knollenberg said. "The citizens in my district are very blessed to have him as a leader in our community. I want to thank Fire Chief Nelson and all local fire, police and county sheriff departments for their courage and dedication to our state."
Following the presentation of the colors by a Michigan State Police Honor Guard, the names of fallen soldiers and responders were read and honored. The ceremony is an annual event in the Michigan House.

Unfortunately, Troy Mayor JANICE DANIELS, did not honor Fire Chief Bill Nelson in a suitable manner worthy of him being named 'Michigan Fire Chief of the Year.'

Jeff, I was at the last city council meeting and thought Chief Nelson was honored appropriately. He probably should have been called to the podium for a photo opportunity as Sue Martin pointed out. However, everyone in the audience clapped for him after the mayor warmly read the proclamation for him and asked him to stand. He got more than the “lackluster nod” Sue described. You folks are seeing things through your “I dislike Mayor Daniels” lenses.
I understand you’re angry with the mayor and will be voting to recall her, but please try to see the good things she is doing for our city. There are some, whether you believe it or not.

Seems like the attitude/agenda of one sector that has no respect or use for anyone employed as a governmental worker rears its ugly head again.

I am pleased to read that Chief Nelson received the recognition he deserves! While it was brought to the attention of the city that Chief Nelson was awarded this high honor, there was no invitation to join the mayor at the podium to have a proclamation read aloud-it was a sad commentary of the way things have been run since her election. It saddens me to see an honor such as this one be given so little praise and thanks. Very rarely does a VOLUNTEER fire department and its chief get the recognition they so deserve. Congrats Chief Nelson!!!

WARNING: FIRST RESPONDERS' use of THE CHLORINE INSTITUTE "C" KIT may cause the catastrophic failure of a chlorine tank car, instantly creating a toxic gas plume with a distance of not less than seven miles. The first mile will have chlorine concentrations of 1,000 ppm, causing death after one or two breaths with no opportunity for escape. TO learn more, see PETITION C KIT, click on "First Responder Warnings."

TOXIC TRAIN SAFETY - A First Responders Petition caused The Chlorine Institute to conduct a five-month study comparing the safety of secondary containment to the chlorine “C”-Kit for chlorine tank cars. The study proved secondary containment to be, by far, the safest technology for containing and preventing releases of chlorine gas. To see secondary containment - search “CHLORTANKER.”
