Troy Mayor Said 'Disturbing Things' in Meeting, Gay-Straight Alliance Leader Says
Janice Daniels' reference to homosexuality being dangerous to mental health disturbed leaders of the Troy High School Gay-Straight Alliance, whom the mayor met with on Monday.
Troy Mayor Janice Daniels again met with members of the Troy High School Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) Monday afternoon in an effort to reach an understanding after Daniels' anti-gay Facebook slur garnered statewide and nationwide attention last month.
The meeting, however, left several members of the GSA and their supporters disappointed.
“There were a lot of disturbing things that were said in that meeting," said GSA member and Troy High School senior Skye Curtis.
According to Curtis and others who attended the meeting – including GSA member Zach Kilgore and lesbian couple Amy and Tina Weber – Daniels, while discussing mental health and suicide among members of the LGBT community, at one point suggested putting together a panel of psychologists to show that homosexuality is dangerous to your mental health.
"She definitely meant it in quite a negative connotation," Curtis said.
"The mayor of Troy told my daughter this afternoon that she wants to bring in a panel of psychologists to explain to the high school's Gay-Straight Alliance that homosexuality is a mental disease," Rodney Curtis, Skye's father, wrote on his Facebook page.
Amy Weber was so disturbed by Daniels' comments that she attended the Troy City Council meeting Monday evening and asked for an audio copy of the meeting between the Troy High GSA and the mayor, which the mayor recorded, during public comment.
When asked about the comment, however, Daniels said she said no such thing.
"That is a misrepresentation entirely," Daniels said in an interview with Troy Patch Monday evening. "I would like to meet with Skye and her parents to discuss these kinds of issues. Rather than have all this division, we need to come together, because I never said that."
"Her tune changed completely," Kilgore said. "Before, she was very for an anti-bullying event because she thought we could turn this into a positive thing. What we found out today was that she was not planning on doing that.
"She turned it into an anti-suicide thing, which is great, but she wanted to completely ignore the issue that started this."
“That bullying leads to suicide," Curtis continued. "Then we started talking about who could possibly speak, and she alluded to the fact that she wanted to bring in a panel of psychologists who would testify that homosexuality was a mental disease."
“This was implied by her," Kilgore clarified. "She didn’t explicitly say it. Somebody said something to the effect of, 'we can't tell these kids that what they're doing is wrong.'"
"And she said, 'well, I can get a panel to testify,'" Curtis said. "Which is really horrifying, because if we're trying to prevent suicide, telling a room full of gay kids that they have a mental disease probably isn't a way to prevent suicide."
Curtis said they hope to press on with plans to put on an anti-bullying and suicide prevention program some time in January or February.
"We're moving on without her," Kilgore said.

That all depends on who is defining "expert". In this case, it would not be the APA. Anyone who agrees with her, she sees as an "expert".
Bill Lynn
2:25 pm on Saturday, January 28, 2012
Point of fact. The APA replaced "homosexuality" in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) in 1973 and replaced it with "ego-dystonic homosexuality" which was removed entirely from the DSM in 1986. Since then, the field of psychiatry has not recognized homosexuality alone as a mental illness. Which isn't to say that members of the LGBT community aren't affected by other forms of mental illness just the way the straight community is. What worries me most about mental illness and the LGBT community is the high rate of teen suicide. And I can't help but think that Daniels' publicly expressed homophobia will do irreparable harm to the LGBT students in Troy. It's really time for her to go before her hate causes some despondent teenager to kill themselves.

I am proud of our city and of our mayor. She is trying to make amends for a statement she, unthinkingly made, 4 months before she took office. She is trying to turn it into something positive, but you won't let her. Once you have a target, they are through. She obtained more votes than any mayor in Troy's history. She is brilliant and, yes, out-spoken about her beliefs. I don't agree with all of her views, but I have always admired those who fight for their beliefs with genuine passion. I am tired of people who live outside of Troy pontificating to us about what you think we should, or should not be. We have plenty to be proud of in Troy and we won't let hate-feeders distort our perspective. Mary Ann, if you want to be proud of someone, may I suggest Skye Curtis and Zach Kilgore? They are actually still trying to go somewhere positive with this whole mess. On the other hand, Ms. Daniels' actions were condescending, dismissive and disrespectful back in December and seems to be continuing that approach still.
As I wrote back in December, there are real lives at stake. The mayor has demonstrated a strong unwillingness to learn or even to listen and honestly respond. That is a tragic attitude that doesn't indicate brilliance but rather strengthens the image of arrogance that the rest of her actions paint. Further, her actions and her supporters give license to bullies to continue harming innocent citizens of your own community. I am sorry that you're tired of "people who live outside of Troy pontificating" about what we think you should or should not be. However, when you appear to be supportive of homophobic bigotry, you can safely expect some pontificating.

Mary Ann,
The Mayor is no longer a regular citizen. She is now in the service to all citizens of the city of Troy. As result, she has no right to bring her social fundamental or any beliefs into her office. If asked, she can say "that is not my belief. If pressed, she can say "that is a private matter". She no longer has a right to any position publicly that has nothing to do with her position. Again, there is nothing about her job that has anything to do with her social fundamentalist views and, until she leaves her office, can no longer "fight for (her) beliefs with genuine passion" until she leaves office and becomes a private citizen again.
I live in Troy and do not want important and potentially divisive social issues that are suprefluous to the position of mayor to be associated with our elective offices. We need more Troy residents "pontificating" to our Mayor!

Mayor Janice Daniels of the City of Troy needs to understand she is Mayor of ALL CITIZENS OF TROY, not only for those who agree with her social fundamentalist beliefs, or those in the Tea Party or any party, who share her social fundamentalist beliefs. Again, she is Mayor of ALL CITIZENS OF TROY.
There is NOTHING about social fundamentalist opinions that have ANYTHING to do with the position of Mayor or any position in the City of Troy.
Mayor Daniels MUST APOLOGIZE PROFUSELY AND PUBLICLY TO EVERY CITIZEN OF TROY for expressing her personal and private social fundamentalist views because they are none of her business as Mayor and for wasting the City’s time because of her error. She should also PROFUSELY AND PUBLICLY vow to never speak of any social fundamentalist issues in her current or any future position in the City of Troy. She should then go home and pray for forgiveness.
If she cannot PUBLICLY PROFESS and LIVE UP TO this simple, common sense, fair, very American set of rules, the citizens of Troy MUST START A RECALL CAMPAIGN IMMEDIATELY!
If Mayor Daniels was any more than supremely apologetic to the students of Troy High, if she, even “alluded to the fact that she wanted to bring in a panel of psychologists who would testify that homosexuality was a mental disease”, if she cannot PUBLICLY declare bullying of anyone in Troy is unacceptable, she may be incapable of keeping her social fundamental views to herself and MUST BE REMOVED FROM OFFICE!

Hunter , If the mayor said that and she thinks she going to bring psychologist in to explain it it will have to be like the expert she brought in about the transit center who was a person who used data very very outdated and with misinterpretions. Some one pointed out earlier in this chain that the APA stated it was not an illness . Dr Freud wrote a letter in the 1920's to a mother who wanted him to treat her homosexual son . In part he said " While homosexuality may have it inconviences it is not an illness . Our mayor is a graduate of Oakland University she is capable of learning the literature and data . She choses to live with her misguided ideas rather then learn the data . What's more she is nasty and insulting to some of Troy's citzens. If you listen to her 5 page reading of her white paper last night you can see
that she choses to accuse and insult those who she does not agree with. She thinks she knows all and g-d only loves her. She is his only person.

Now you are even insulting the state of Alabama! I read this thread and I can tell you that any reasonable person reading it would be readily be able to see where the hate and the stereotyping is, and it isn't with the mayor. Many of you repeatedly say that she has no right to "use her position to espouse her 'social fundamental views.' " What you fail to say is that she never brought any of these issues up --- YOU DID! Someone combed through her facebook pages to find something from months before she took office and you have been hounding her ever since, despite the fact that she has apoligized, has met with Troy students, and is planning an event to try to turn it into something positive and helpful to those who may be hurting --- for any reason. And what is this phobia about having a psychologist involved in the event --- that does not say that being gay is a disease. She did not say that! For heave sakes, is there no distortion that you will not stoop to? The students and others kept saying that suicides are often the result of hurt and bullying. Well, wouldn't the first, the very first reaction, be that very, very serious help should be given to this and that we should all be taught the warning signs to look for? There is no coming back from suicide. It calls for more than a talk-with-the-neighbor-next-door type help. It deserves professional help. Of course, anything that she would try to do would be wrong with you!

Ms Bernardi, Trying to use " Red Herrings " to change the focus of Mayor Daniel's
inappropriate comments an behavior is not becoming of you. I have always respected your honesty , however , I am Afraid you are doing all the things that I so dislike about the poltical scene today. Which is to change the focus of the main issue , change the direction of the issue, project the fault , distort what the person did or said. The issue is that Mayor Daniels has repeatdly insulted a group of her citizens , she does not follow proper meeting protocals , Her attempts at apologies have been to reinsult people. I want her to succeed and people like you should help her understand why many many citizens are upset , instead of supporting or excusing her behavior . We need a mayor who can function for all citizens for the next four years . We need a mayor who educates herself on the issues instead of believing she can impose her limited insight concepts on all.

NOBODY cares enough about Mayor Daniels to purposely drag her though the mud for the hell of it. SHE ALONE is the one responsible for all of this. If she has ever really tried to fix this, then is more incompetent than she is bigoted. I really wonder at what point you will stop your hair brained defense of her. You are losing sight of the things she has said SINCE she's been in office, defending her behavior. She has NEVER apologized, she has justified. As Danny said, SHE is responsible for all of this. If she had handled it appropriately from the beginning, the storm would never have ensued. By the way, there is INTERNATIONAL outrage at her behavior. Is that REALLY Sharon MacDonnell's fault. She doesn't control Janice's comments to the press or to students. When she took public office, she lost the freedom to voice her personal opinions. She pledged to uphold the constitution---all of it, not just the parts she agrees with.

She thought the thoughts and wrote the words..free speech....and that Sharon MacDonnell plastered it on HER blog...that's all and here we all are. She did apologize, and this is the first time I have mentioned her apologizing by the way... but nothing is good enough for all you people that continually complain. Why should you care at what point I will stop defending her? At what point will you stop spewing. If you think nobody cares enough to drag her throught he mud then why DID this Sharon Macdonnell do it inthe first place then? Why bother with it? It is apparent she intended for something to happen and gee, why not have done it before elections were completed? Then perhaps Daniels wouldn't be in office at all? However the post was discovered is irrelevant. Any person with common sense would know better than to post controversial topics when planning to run for office. Anytime you are in the public eye your life is put under a magnifying glass. How do you think tabloids stay in business? Yes I think she is much different from Paris Hilton or other celebrities, but her life and all her actions are being watched very carefully. As others have said there are ways for her to correct the previous problems...only time will tell whether or not she will continue to make mistakes or fix the issues
Linda
12:14 am on Wednesday, January 11, 2012
Let me correct some of these posts. Sharon did not comb through Janice's FB page. Someone wanted to know more about the new Mayor and came across her bigoted post and forwarded it. What difference does it make how it was published? The fact of the matter is that Janice said it and she alone is responsible for the wrath that she has brought upon our City. As far as apologizing, how sincere was her apology when she continued to put off the youth of the city? It was a political ploy. Now I see that Glenn Clark and Bob Gosselin (Oakland County Commissioner) are "protecting" her from the media. If she didn't say anything wrong, what's wrong with releasing the tape? These were the ones that campaigned on "transparency." What does this say about the whole group? This is an embarrassment to the city and the Republican Party.
Also, I am very proud of the youth of Troy. This says something about the true spirit of our city, not the ideologues who have been elected. I take exception to those that attack them as "not knowing." I would rather have a conversation with them any day, then the poster who said it would be like talking to a wall. Going to council meetings does not make you a guru on everything local or otherwise.
Some people should remember Mark Twain's quote: "Better to remain silent and thought a fool then to speak and remove all doubt."

She is a bully who bullied both both Mayor Schilling and Councilperson Kerwin.
She has bullied our city manager and other city employees . She has never appropriately apologized to the gay community or to the citizens of Troy for the
defaming effect she had on our city. An appropriate apology never has a "but: in it .
It also requires a change in behavior . We have seen neither of those . Her attempts at apologies have always been more excuses . Sorry but that is what I am saying and what I think the majority in this blog are saying. So this is the topic :

OK, here I am. Big bad Sharon.
Since November of 2009, TCU and Janice Daniels have been misinforming the public about many, many, many things. They have lied about people in office, and all of you, Mary Ann and Linda, remained silent.
Now when I pass on the TRUTH about your favorite mayor you say it's my "fault?"
That is ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous.
And by the way, about Janice Daniels' gay slur -- it was public on her FB page and even after it went viral, after it became huge news that first weekend, Janice Daniels did NOT take it down, because she was NOT ASHAMED. Just like yesterday she said, 'I didn't say gay people are mentally ill, I said they have more diseases than other people.' Dear Linda and Mary Ann, I couldn't possibly make that stuff up. It's hilarious! Her excuse is as bad as (or worse) than what she was accused of!

Let's keep our focus on the Mayor. She needs to repair this situation, by apologizing to the City for letting her personal beliefs supersede what is best for the whole city. Her responses create the appearance she intends to stick to her ideology and her freedom of speech rather than behaving as Mayor. She works for ALL of us equally, regardless of any other personal issue. These social issues have NOTHING to do with the position of Mayor. Again, she is OUR MAYOR, NOT OUR MINISTER!

I do not live in Troy, or Rochester for that matter, but I wonder why that should have anything to do with responding to this Patch article? For those of you that don't know it yet, we live in a global environment. I didn't think I needed a passport to get into the city of Troy. And for those who don't welcome people into their cities to shop don't understand government at all, nor do they understand how their tax dollars are determined. It is called Revenue Sharing and it works like this: People shop in your city, the state collects sales tax and then the state returns a portion of that tax to the cities. This reduces your property tax. So for heavens sake, and for the sake of property tax payers you should be welcoming everyone. (For a little homework assignment call the City of Troy Treasurer and ask what percentage of the city tax base is paid by Somerset Collections property owners. If people did not shop there your property taxes would skyrocket.) I am sorry for the city of Troy and I am sorry for the State of Michigan that one person has brought such a negative spotlight on all of us. Whether you consider her a friend or you consider her a liability you have to admit she is not a particularly good role model at this time. Because she is an admitted Tea Partier she will likely carry on in an angry mode. I pitty anyone who has to walk through life with a chip on their shoulders.

Unfortunately, I also went to a Troy Tea Party event and it was not a good experience. You are right about the anger. I don't understand this. Why can't there be civil dialogue with the parties getting their facts straight, or at least be open to checking them? This type of behavior does nothing to promote the original intention.

I believe there is a LOT of hate going on here. In this feed and in this town. I lived in Alabama from 1962 through 1966. I actually saw Klan meetings occurring in fields when we were driving down the road. I have not seen hate like that until now. I moved to Troy because it was a community being built by a diverse population, which I THOUGHT would prevent such things from occurring here. I never saw that behavior in Troy until the Tea Party came to town. I never heard people make bigoted comments here until the Tea party came to town. Not every one behaves that way, but those who don't have a responsibility to reject that behavior when they see it. It is not socially acceptable. The kinds of tantrums I have seen in public are worthy of a 10 year old. Anyone see the Channel 7 tape of the Mayor's office hours this week? Please. That is NOT how a mature, experienced government representative behaves. The conversation on this feed has degenerated into the same kind of whining. Grow up, folks. Audre Zembrzuski, She is not done. She has one statement to do in order to put this behind all of us.
The Mayor needs to apologize, not just to our kids, but to the whole City and publicly promise to keep her personal moral views out of discussion while she is Mayor and suggest that they are not appropriate in the context of any city business or council meetings by anyone.
As Mayor, she no longer can exercise her freedom to speak openly on these issues. She cannot even APPEAR to take a side or hint at doing so. It is totally inappropriate for her to act as our Minister. She is no longer a representative of herself; she is the representative of every citizen of Troy. It is one of the burdens and benefits of the office.
Only this will put this matter behind all of us, so we can continue on in the business of the City of Troy.
