RECALLED: Troy Mayor Janice Daniels Voted Out of Office
A majority of Troy residents voted to remove embattled Troy Mayor Janice Daniels from office Tuesday.
The people of Troy voted 52 percent to 48 percent to recall Mayor Janice Daniels on Tuesday.
The votes were 20,763 to 18,993, according to unofficial results from the Oakland County Clerk, with all precincts reporting.
It all started with a Facebook status update containing a gay slur that then-private citizen Daniels posted on her wall in June of 2011.
Then, on Dec. 2, 2011, just weeks after she was sworn in as mayor of Troy, the Facebook post was found, shared, and shared some more, quickly garnering national media attention.
Residents were angry. A recall effort was mounted. Nearly 9,000 valid signatures were collected to trigger the Nov. 6 recall election.
"I'm elated, over the moon," Recall Janice Daniels co-founder John Kulesz said as recall volunteers celebrated into the night at Joe Kool's in Troy. "It's amazing to do something that the majority of the people of Troy responded to in such a positive way."
For the latest Troy news and information, follow Troy Patch on Facebook and Twitter.
“We’re so happy that the people of Troy have realized that Janice is not the best person to represent them, and that Troy can and will do better," Recall Janice Daniels co-founder Matt Binkowski said.
“I’m cautiously optimistic," said Neil Yashinsky, a recall supporter who ran for a seat on Troy City Council a year ago. "I feel like we’re still a very evenly divided city in terms of pressing issues, and I hope that we have the foresight as a community to stay focused on what we agree on than what we disagree on.”
Once the election is certified, the mayor will be removed from office. Then, Troy City Council will begin the process of finding a replacement.
“We’re ready to start the next chapter in the City of Troy," Mayor Pro Tem Maureen McGinnis said.
Councilman Jim Campbell agreed, saying, “We’re going to put all this stuff behind us and start thinking about the citizens instead of the ideology of Mayor Daniels.”
“It feels good. We’ve gone farther than we ever expected to," Kulesz said.
Daniels could not be reached for comment late Tuesday and did not return calls from Troy Patch.
Complete coverage
Since her anti-gay Facebook comment went viral, Daniels has remained the center of controversy after voting against the Troy Transit Center (a scaled-down version was later approved), telling the Troy High School Gay-Straight Alliance she would bring in an expert to tell them the homosexual lifestyle is "dangerous," comparing the dangers of homosexuality to the dangers of smoking cigarettes on a radio show, writing a lengthy position paper some viewed as personally attacking city employees and council members, and engaging in an argument with 2012 Troy Distinguished Citizen Mary Kerwin over the origin of her award while while presenting Kerwin with a proclamation during an October Troy City Council meeting.

It is not just her!
I hear good news and this is a great start. But please shine the light in there even brighter now. This recall proves the people still make the final call and can hold officials accountable since most refuse to do so on their own. This is also notice to other officials that their perversions of power and any attacks of personal freedoms or lifestyle will not survive in the light of day. Follow the money.

Great news to wake up to. I am sure that the city council will move forward together to name a mayor for the next year until the regular November election, following the city charter. And to forestall arguments from Daniels' supporters that they will be split, here is what Dale Murrish had noted this summer about the way the council works well together:

I’ve attended a lot of council meetings recently (starting with opposing the wasteful spending for the transit center) and have been impressed with the way ALL SEVEN council members have been working together to solve Troy’s problems.

I thought we were given a constitutionally-limited representative Republic? You know, like we say in the Pledge of Allegiance and like Ben Franklin told an inquisitive citizen back during our nation's founding? That protects the minority from the majority....like when six wolves and one sheep decide what's for dinner.
Then again, now that I think about it, maybe our Republic has really devolved into more of a mob-ocracy after all.

I love how people like Barbara Harrell are all about protecting the minority from the majority except when it comes to things like gay marriage, abortion and where muslims can build mosques. Then majority mob rule is just super. But I guess Barbara would say that when it comes to those things, God whispers his wishes in their ears and they're just doing what they're told.

This is great news for Troy. I'm very proud of my city, that this improbable exercise of voters rights under the constitution of Michigan was successful. I am very greatful to the Recall Team.
I really don't know if I will be spending too much time here. This was my issue. I feel it has been resolved to the benefit of Troy and hope everyone can move past this disturbing time.

For the first time in a few years, I feel proud to live in Troy. We need to move forward, focusing on the values that brought us together. Instead of focusing on the ideology of a minority and allowing them to squander our intellectual capital in this community, we need to unite the citizens of Troy to resolve the still difficult issues this city faces. Thank you Troy!

What a waste of time and money!
LET ME PREFACE BY I DONT ENDORSE HER AND WOULDNT HAVE VOTED FOR HER EITHER TIME!
A few facts for you recall fans:
700 voters in 2011 didn't care enough to even vote for Mayor although did turn in a ballot and voted for something.
Roughly 10,000 voters showed up in 2012 that didn't care enough to show up in 2011. Apathetic and pathetic.
She only won in 2011 by 1,234 votes, and only lost in 2012 by 1,770 votes. If 13% of the people who couldn't have been bothered to vote in 2011 had showed up and voted against her the recall wouldn't have been necessary.
And you recalled her entirely for reasons, acts, and statements that were either made before the 2011 election or were consistent with her actions and positions prior to election.
I wonder what GOOD things could have come from the money, time, and resources put into the recall campaign.
And by the way, you the people don't get to pick your new mayor, the fabulous Troy City council does. Good Luck!

Your figures are wrong . further more money spent for recall was by donation and unless it changed recently that is those donars right. The election was already being done . Furthermore we who supported the recall at least myself regreted that we left Matt Pryor make our city the laughing stock for 4 years and was the root of later problems. I agree about those who did not bother to vote but unfortunately that is a problem in local election across the country.

OK Troy City Council are you done wasting our(Troy city resident for now) time and money with your frivolous agenda to "out" the Mayor that was voted in by "POPULAR VOTE? You got what you wanted from day one when your "chosen one" did not receive enough votes to win a term for office. Now let's "Grow Up" and get down to some business like restoring some form of professionalism that you are being paid to display. I am embarrassed to say that I'm a Troy resident. The City Council meetings I have attended resemble those that I have seen on national TV of another fine city near here, Detroit. Concerned in Troy!!

Troy City Council didn't organize the Recall. And it didn't cost Troy tax payers a cent. It was a grassroots effort. And I agree the council meetings are embarrassing; the main reason why is now gone. It's unfair to paint the entire council with her lack of decorum. They conducted themselves with professionalism, despite her. Instead of criticizing them, you should thank them for enduring it.

Patrick,
The vote of the citizens of Troy was to vote out of office an insensitive mayor. If you can't represent all of the citizens of our City you don't deserve to be our leader. Former Mayor Daniels lacked a necessary the quality of leadership to know her people and represent them all regardless of sexual orientation, race, religion or individual differences. Some of those who voted for her may have had alternative lifestyles, but agreed with her "conservative" views until she exposed her true colors. Understand, I am not one of her supporter and agree with the "majority" who demonstrated how term limitation really works. I pray that our future politicians will take notice that certain expression of their personal beliefs will effect their political expectations.

Hooray!!!! The wicked witch of the Board Room was given her token broom yesterday and is being wisked away. Perhaps the next Mayor elect should be given a personality and intelligence test prior to being allowed on the ballot. As for Janice may you have strong winds on your back as you fly to another pasture far from Troy.

Janice Daniels was not the only one practicing the politics of crazy on the council. She was just louder about it. Councilmen Tietz, Henderson and to a slightly lesser degree, Fleming were right there with her 99% of the time. They just had the good sense to keep their mouths shut.
Janice was a truly amazing example of someone with aspirations far beyond her intellect. It's incumbent on all of us to read up on, find out about, and if necessary, reject people running for office who don't understand or don't want to follow the roles and rules of the offices they're running for (Daniels' Troy's Marriage Policy--for example).
We can't go to sleep on these people ever again.

Wiley, Daniels really upset people because she used her position to push her ideology, and did it when Tietz, Henderson and Fleming did the right thing for the city, like approving the budget. They may work with groups espousing their views, but have seemed to not highlight them in public the way Daniels did. If she'd shut up about city workers and Szerlag, rather than behave imperiously and arrogantly, if she'd been understanding towards the students and helped regarding suicide and not pushed her anti-gay views, if she'd not reinforced her anti-gay views and had not invited outsiders who presented racist arguments against the transit center, the recall petitions might have failed. If she'd shut up and not said being gay is a health risk like cigarettes, or insulted Kerwin, if she'd learned how to run a meeting and behaved like a professional, normal person, and if she hadn't defended bigoted friends like Paul Smith, she might have avoided recall. But she didn't. And so far Tietz, Henderson, and Fleming haven't done as she did, although I doubt I'd vote for them knowing their views. Reasonable, electable, alternative candidates need to come forward at election time

I have lived in Troy for over 27 years. I will be honest, I did not vote in 2011 because I really did not care who was mayor or what "party" controlled the city. In fact out of all of the mayors Troy has had since I moved here Janice is the only one I know the name of.
Why? Because up until then things had run well enough. So long as the roads are plowed, the sewage is taken care of, the water is running, the Police / Fire / EMS come respond fast when called and do a great job when they arrive, the schools do well, we don't have smog over the city, etc etc. And it's all done without turning the national spotlight on the city in a bad way or causing a bunch of drama.
But our former mayor could not just do that. That's why I voted to recall. It had nothing to do with her political affiliation.
I hope the remaining members can get things back to the way they used to be where the city focuses on the business of the city.
So long as the dram is low enough that I don't hear about it on CNN and the city is running smoothing enough to not cause major problems; I don't care who runs the city or what is zoned what or where we build this or that. Please let me go back to not caring about city politics because I really hate politics. :P

Andrew , Iwish to inform you several things
1. Our charter makes our elections in Troy non-partison .
2..Our city government statred to have problems that had potential in long terms problems right around 2000
3. All politics are local and that means that they are very important to watch because they effect your everyday life . For instant if we had well infiormed voters they majority would have never voted for the millage cap which very shortly before the real estate crash would have prevented the finanical problems we are digging ourselves out of . That is because it erased uncollected approved millage which our wise managers and council kept for emergencies . We just now awarded that short sighted council person who put that on the ballot to the state legislature so he can bring his short sighted visions to the state. Gee Thomas Jefferson must of been correct when he said '"A democratric republic cannot exist with an uneducated voter".

Daffy, I agree. Kempen ran with Henderson, Tietz and Daniels. This is a link to Henderson's blog for the election: http://davehendersontroycouncil.blogspot.com/ In his Sep 28, 2011 entry he tells his "hat story" and concludes with this statement:
"This story is a very good example of why I'm a little leary about the budget numbers the city has given to the people of Troy, especially as it regards extraction of the entire library budget, in its quest for a tax increase." Did Henderson and Tietz, much less the silent Daniels, find funds hidden in the budget for the library, or anything else? If they had would they not have funded the library or other needs or at least trumpeted the vindication of their beliefs? They didn't. If they couldn't, Kempen couldn't and won't. The premise of their campaign, hidden excess budget funds, was wrong, if not a political figment. Kempen, given his joint error with Daniels, shouldn't be given consideration. He will be divisive.

I'll repost this here since Dale insists on posting half-truths.
As is typical, Dale only tells part of the story to try to steer the reader towards his way of thinking. The studies Dale is most likely referring to stated that while approximately 50% of Americans consider themselves pro-life, 89% of Americans (and 82% percent of Catholics) believe that contraception is "morally acceptable".
In addition, When it comes to abortion, the percentages that believe abortion should be legal under at least some circumstances hasn't been changing very much since Gallup started asking the question back in 1975. 77% of Americans still believe abortion should be legal under certain circumstances. http://reason.com/blog/2012/05/24/record-low-are-pro-choice-yet-75-percent
As always, all the information often tells a very different story than the selective information that Dale likes to provide.

Dale , Is 36% the majority or is 59% majority ? SEE BELOW
There you go again making up numbers .As was said by a famous senator "You are entitled to your opinion but not to make up facts .
From WSJ:Polling data shows just 36 percent of voters who showed up to the polls took a pro-life position supporting making all or most abortions illegal while 59 percent took a pro-abortion position favoring keeping all or most abortions legal.

Good idea, John David. I plan to do both.
Glenn, I'm OK with people having a different point of view on abortion. I'm not OK with the pro-life viewpoint being disrespected as Joe Biden did in the debate with Paul Ryan and the Obama administration has done by forcing people to violate their conscience. That crosses the line for me.
Glenn
12:39 pm on Monday, November 12, 2012
Dale you're not being completely honest again. You're only OK with people having a different point of view on abortion as long as they're not allowed to have one. That's why you and your religious right wing cohorts keep trying to outlaw it. OK is what I am with a pro-life position. Heck, I am pro-life. I don't think that I would ever have opted to have an abortion if the situation would have arisen in my younger days. I have two kids that I wanted and was prepared to have. But I'm not about to tell other people what choices they have to make when it comes to a subject that no one can come to a consensus on.

Barbara Harrell , I think you need to look up definitions before you call someone for using democracy instead of the republic. Since I keep seeing and hearing people play big deals about the difference I decided to give you the definition from the dictionary along with the like words so you can stop nit picking about the 2 words . so her it is:
Republic
(1): a government having a chief of state who is not a monarch and who in modern times is usually a president (2): a political unit (as a nation) having such a form of government
b (1): a government in which supreme power resides in a body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by elected officers and representatives responsible to them and governing according to law (2): a political unit (as a nation) having such a form of government
c. A republic may also be distinguished from direct DEMOCRACY, though modern representative democracies are by and large republics.
Synonyms: DEMOCRACY, SELF-GOVERNMENT, SELF-RULE
Note the synonyms . yes we also have a democracy .

I am not sure why these debates are continuing. The Mayor has been recalled and now it is time to move forward. The Council is going to make a sound decision on a replacement, as it will require they all work together to get it decided. I love that! This suggests that the replacement will be someone focused on bridging the gap between this divided city. I highly doubt they will be looking for someone who they would define as conservative or moderate or liberal. That would be a mistake. Those labels don't belong in city government. Give me someone who will carry themselves with integrity and will base their votes solely on what they feel is best for the city.
Dale - I would echo the suggestion of emailing the council members your suggestion to replace the mayor (though it is likely that the replacement will be a council seat, with an existing council person performing the role of Mayor). Save the blog entry for Nov. 2013 when the people of the city get a vote.
