Troy Mayor to Protesters: 'I Said One Word That You Don't Like'
Troy Mayor Janice Daniels speaks with students and other protesters in front of City Hall, insisting, 'I am not a bully.'
Janice Daniels addressed about 15 protesters in front of City Hall on Monday regarding the controversy surrounding a Facebook post, insisting that she said "one word" that people found offensive.
The protesters included a group of students from the Troy High School Gay-Straight Alliance, and Daniels spoke specifically with Zach Kilgore, the senior who organized Monday's protest in conjunction with the Troy High GSA.
"I'm not a bully," Daniels said, smiling, to the small crowd of students and media. "I'm a nice person."
In answer to questions about her future as mayor, Daniels said: "I'm not going to resign – of course not. I love my new role as mayor."
Daniels also said Century 21, her employer, has asked Daniels to put her "license in escrow"– meaning she has "suffered consequences, too."
Daniels asked that the protesters forgive her for the comment, which included the use of the word "queers" in what has widely been called a derogatory way.
"I think this will pass too, just like all other controversies," Daniels said.
The protesters started chanting angrily, "Janice is a bully," to which Daniels responded:
"I'm a good person, I really am. I said one word that you don't like. One word."
The last comment drew criticism from members of the crowd, and she left soon after. She is expected back for the City Council meeting, which is set to start at 7:30 p.m.
Protesters carrying umbrellas, colorful signs and "Recall Janice Daniels" petitions continued to gather after Daniels departed; by 5:30 p.m., roughly two dozen protestors – a mix of high school students and adults – stood on the side of Big Beaver Road at the entrance to the Troy city complex waving at cars and cheering whenever one honked at the group.
Jeff Williams of Troy was one of the protestors. "We don't need a mayor that says that kind of thing," Williams said. "I don't want to be represented by a mayor who has those feelings for the gay community."
Kirsten Douglass of Troy added: "I'm here to support civil rights. The mayor is supposed to be the voice of Troy, but she's not my voice."
There were a few supporters of the mayor as well, including Mary Mills of Clarkston.
"I'm here to support Mayor Daniels because in my opinion she didn't do anything wrong and she's allowed to express herself," Mills said. "The issue is about marriage being between one man and one woman, and I support her."
Members of the Troy Police Department have been monitoring the nonviolent protest from a distance; in the east entrance lobby, several protestors were busy making signs just feet away from a small group of three Daniels supporters.
Shortly after the mayor's appearance, a statement from the Troy City manager, John Szerlag, was released. It said:
“The City of Troy is the second most diverse City in the State of Michigan and we are extremely proud of and enriched by our diversity. We respect everyone who lives here and does business in the City of Troy and encourage people and businesses to continue to locate here.
Troy has a Council-Manager form of government, this means that all employees with the exception of the City Attorney’s Department work for the City Manager. Council sets policy and the Manager and staff execute it. As such, City Council can only speak formally through their resolutions.
Personal comments made by the Mayor and any individual Council member are just that.”

Um... No. You said one word which clearly indicated your prejudice. A prejudice which is used to support violence and discrimination and is based on ignorance. A prejudice which harms our world. A prejudice that you have defended and thereby continue to lend support to, increasing the harm. Please leave the public sphere and get to know some gay people. Even better: actually *study* the Bible, how and by whom it was written and how Christianity actually developed. Education is the key, Ms. Daniels.

@Wilbur: The modern concept of Gay people didn't exist during Biblical time. The Bible does say to love they neighbor, above everything else. How does the Mayor's comments - and your own - reflect this virtue?

Wow! Now there is a modern concept about gay people. Does that mean there were no gay people during Biblical times? Also, there is no place in the Bible that says "to love they neighbor." And here dumb me always thought "gay" meant "happy." I suppose you are one of many who will welcome Islam over Christianity, too. Message is for Dan McDougal.

@Wilbur...You state: "I suppose you are one of many who will welcome Islam over Christianity, too."
And this has exactly what to do with the discussion of Janice Daniels? The Bible has nothing whatsoever to do with her bigotted comments, as we don't live in a Theocracy where anyone's "Holy Book" is part of the law of the land.

Hey Wilbur, FYI there was homosexuality during biblical times, it was just much more taboo and never discussed. Since you are so special and holy you should know without even asking the bible is all about respecting your neighbor and loving others. God is the judge, not you. Nobody needs to reference the bible to know that this woman is a piece of garbage. Just like when someone uses the N- word, it isn't just one word, it proves they are racist. It's so funny that the most hate and judgmental opinions come from the most religious people, really makes you wonder.

She just doesn't "get it". One word can cause a lot of pain and misery, especially when it is said by someone in her position. She should step down despite "loving her new role as mayor. How can she claim to represent all of her constituents when she feels that way?

One word? The entire comment was an expression of bigotry! To go so far as to say that she would throw away her 'I love NY' bag over the issue of marriage equality is not 'one word.' To threaten to actually throw away the bag promoting the state she is, in part, supposed to be representing shows a loathing for an entire class of voters. And then to offer a pretend apology — using the moment to push her beliefs, yet again... shameful. This woman does NOT represent the people of her community. She represents her own career and agenda.

We each enjoy first amendment rights--the freedom to say whatever we want, but having the freedom to say it, does not make it right.
When I read the comment Mayor Daniels made, my first were of Fred Phelps and his crusade across our country. Mayor Daniels comments would fit right in with any other of the vile signs and placards being waived by his Westboro Baptist Church . Posters telling us how "God Hates [LBGT's]", "Thank God for IEDs" & "Thank God for Dead Soldiers." These posters paint a picture of the most extreme of ideologies and the most hateful of expression under the freedom of our 1st amendment.
I wonder, truthfully, how Mayor Daniels' son and his fellow soldiers, feel about Fred Phelps' brand of hate and about first amendment rights being used to dishonor the sacrifices made in the name of freedom by our young men and women in the armed forces. While Mayor Daniels may not see it clearly, her single word can help fuel and support people like Fred Phelps to continue their campaigns of hate against not only the LBGT community but against soldiers, and other who serve our communities on a daily basis. Her cavalier attitude towards using a slur and the hate it produces cheapens her as a person and undermines her as a leader.
So next time you want to defend hate with the "First Amendment" go watch a soldiers funeral being picket by Fred Phelps and look into the eyes of the grieving family as they have to pass Westboro exercising their 1st amendment rights.

Our mayor made a mistake. She has realized this, and asked for forgiveness. How many elected officials do you know of that admit their mistakes publicly?
"Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity." Colossians 3:12-14
and Luke 6:37 says:
37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven."
I believe she is sincere in her regret, and in her appeal for forgiveness. Move on, and let her show her worth by her actions in office.

I think you can probably make your own decisions without quoting the bible. If you need a book to tell you to not hurt others, you may want to take a good hard look at what your moral structure is like. I'm not sure why would you even agree that a woman should be in office? 1 Timothy 2:12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet.
That being said, she did not give a good apology. She is apologizing for using a word. The offensive part was saying that she condemned the right for two adults in love to marry one another If she can't handle the backlash, she probably shouldn't be in politics.

I don't believe she made a mistake, I believe she made her true feelings known and then they became known. She has not said that she doesn't feel that way. That would be what is needed for her to represent the gay folks as mayor. But, the "cat's out of the bag" and an apology won't cut it imho.

Rev. Dave: There has been no sincere apology from Mayor Daniels, only excuses, justifications and pontification of her "plight." She asks forgiveness when she has offered no admission to the hate that her words presented?
So I put to you, were did her comments follow Colossians 3:12-14 or Luke 6:37 when she spewed hate and resentment of LBGT's who received the right to Marry in NY State? What statement has she made that showed pure contrition without playing a victim? Where has she acknowledge how words like hers often encourage actions of bullying and assault. So I leave you with this verse, which I feel is much more appropriate and should give you a direction to counsel Mayor Daniels:
Matthew 25:41-46
"41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 44 Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ 45 Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ 46 And these will go away kinto eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

I think it is important to call out the source of her bigotry. It is not about a single "word," or a "human mistake" or any such lapse or "learning experience" that will make her a better person. It is, in its most disturbing form, the frightening expression of religious bigotry when an elected official forgets, or refuses to acknowledge, the separation of church and State. What next Janice? Attacks on Muslims, Jews, Pagans? For someone to be so ignorant to make such a remark in public, and not expect ramifications and response, calls into question her ability to use any form of intellect to lead this city in a time when vision and creativity is called for. She should absolutely resign because this inbred fundamentalism will rise again and Troy and its citizens will be the worse off for it.

I find her completely condescending in her "apology" based on the video. I don't think that she even understands the true impact of what she said, and how it is not just a small thing that you accidentally say when drunk at a dinner party. She is reflecting poorly on the entire city of Troy, and offending a large group of people. Reading the comments vs. watching them is completely different. Her flippant attitude is offensive.

It's not just that she improperly used the word "queers". Her comment shows how she is the wrong person to lead the city of Troy. Her views on gay people are so opposing to Troy's. Already, people in other cities are beginning to think that Troy is homophobic when it's not. That's the problem.

I'm a Chriatian and willing to forgive, but her apology is NOT genuine and is nearly as insulting as her original comment. Besides, her statement was more than just a word. I grew up in this city. Went to school at Athens. This is why I moved away. I have to say there are so many insulated towns like this across America who clearly can't see beyond "The Bible" and put their faith in humankind instead. If you're a Christian, isn't the whole idea to live your life in a way that is protective and kind to those around you? Judge not, that ye be not judged? Rather than slamming gays, women, liberals, people of other races and religions.. It's all hypocrisy and it's so, so sad. That one word could have been "retard" "nigger" etc.. This act of hers seems to have fostered a lot of anti-Christianity rhetoric. Marilyn, the source of the Mayor's hatred is irrelevant. There are plenty of Christians who DON'T agree with her about gay people and how they should be treated. There are plenty of Christians who would NEVER use that derogatory word. You are missing the point. The point is that degradation of people has no place in civil government. She's entitled to her opinion, as we all are. But she ran on a platform of being a "good Christian Tea Party co-founder" and this is apparently what HER version of Christianity encourages her to express publicly where anyone can see it. She lacks good judgment. She speaks indecently. She is a bigot - because a principled difference of opinion on marriage doesn't include that word. And she's not sorry, at all. She should resign.
But not before another City Council meeting where former bullies explain to her exactly why they though it was okay to call gay people derogatory names, as she did. And where the victims of those bullies tell her how it felt.
Christian, my foot. Her behavior is the most unChristian thing I've seen in a long time.

I doubt that there is one person making comments that have never said something they regret at one time or another in their lifetime. She made a mistake. All of the people quoting the Bible know we should forgive. Time to forgive and accept her apology. You do not need to totally destroy a persons life for one dumb comment they made. Maybe they should meet at Hooters ( in Troy ) and discuss this over some wings and cold beer.
John Deuel

Mike, I think there is some hyperbole involved in the claim that people are trying to "destroy a persons life" when they say she should resign. Her life is far from synonymous with her position as Mayor. If that was the case, losing the next election would constitute destroying her life. My position, and perhaps the position of others who are upset, is that her prejudicial stance against the LGBT community makes her unworthy to govern, and the scorn she has brought upon the community by both the original comment and her behavior since then has made her unable to govern. Hence, she should resign for her own good and the good of the people of Troy. None of us, I hope, want to destroy her life. Quite the contrary, I suspect that most of us want her to grow out of her prejudice. Her response so far has been to dig in, defend and deflect. The conclusion is that she has not grown past her prejudice and the educational efforts must continue.
We are fighting for the lives of our children. Jacob Rogers committed suicide yesterday. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/08/jacob-rogers-tennessee-teen-suicide-_n_1136689.html) Those of us who allow Janice Daniels' prejudice to go unchallenged ignore our responsibility as citizens.
