Week In Review: More Mayor Controversy, Armed Robbery, Massage Parlor Remains Closed

Check out the stories that made headlines last week on the Troy Patch.

Last week's headlines were filled with more controversy over Mayor Janice Daniels, a police investigation of an armed robbery at the Red Roof Inn and the questionable future for Troy massage parlor. Check out what you may have missed.

Mayor Controversy

On Monday, City Manager John Szerlag released a response letter, slamming Mayor Daniels for "inaccuracies" in the position paper she read to the council on Jan. 9. Daniels wrote that she has "no confidence in our City Manager's ability to continue to perform the duties granted to him in this position." Check out the full story and the letters attached as PDFs. What do you think of the City Manager's response?

On Friday, there was more conversation about recalling Daniels after a consulting firm released a poll suggesting 72 percent of Troy voters would like to oust the mayor.

Armed Robbery Suspect Caught

Troy police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred on Jan. 22 at the Red Roof Inn. Police say the suspect was chased down and crashed in Detroit on Monday with two other men in the vehicle. Southfield police shot the suspect in the buttocks when he attempted to flee on foot; the other two men got away.  The man is expected to recover. However, police across metro Detroit believe the suspect is linked to several other armed robberies that occured within the past week.

Massage Parlor Issue

Recovery Spa on East Maple Road probably won't be reopening any time soon. At Monday's meeting, City Council voted to revoke a 2011 massage parlor license at Recovery Spa. The vote affirmed the city's decision to close the business last December after employees were charged with prostitution and police discovered several other ordinance violations. Recovery Spa has submitted an application for a license renewal and the city has 60 days to approve it, pending a background investigation and the adjudication process.

What's Brewing on Big Beaver Road?

On Friday, we reported on a new brewery and restaurant opening this March on West Big Beaver Road near I-75. Granite City Food & Brewery, a Minnesota-based chain, will offer a casual dining experience with a wide selection of food and beer. Check back with the Troy Patch for updates on a grand opening date.
