I received in the mail today a political mailer from the opponents of the Mayoral recall effort. Now, I probably wouldn’t be writing about this here, except that imagery on the mailer demands a response. As I make this response I need to say up front that while I am a local pastor, in this case I’m speaking here as a private citizen. And I will also note that while I did sign the petition to recall the mayor and will vote for her recall, that’s not why I’m writing today. The reason I’m writing today is the use of the story of Daniel in the Lions’ Den to describe her situation.
There is great power in using religious imagery for political gain. It works because we know these stories. We may not remember the context, but we get the gist. So, what is Janice Daniels comparing herself to Daniel and City Hall to the Lions? If you know the story, Daniel was a Jewish man who had gained notice among the Persians for his wisdom and ability to interpret dreams. He rose to a high position in the government, and jealous members of that government hatched a plan to get rid of him. So, they convinced the king to create an idol and require all citizens to bow before it on the penalty of death. They did this because they knew that Daniel, being a righteous Jew, would never bow to such an idol. When the day came, he did refuse, and though the king was displeased by this turn of events, he had to execute Daniel by throwing him to the lions. Now, God intervenes and Daniel is spared, and then the king causes his enemies to suffer the fate they intended for him. That is, they and their wives and children are thrown into the Lions’ Den, where they are killed.
As I retell the story do you get a sense of the story that Janice Daniels wants to tell us? Do you not hear her saying to us as the citizens of Troy, that she is the righteous one? She is simply doing the work and will of God here in the city. Unfortunately there are evil partisans lurking in City Hall, who are seeking to do her in. And who are these evil partisans? It’s the employees of the city from the City Manager on down who, along with their “extremist” friends, have plotted to do her in. But there is good news, because she is righteous and is standing up for the things of God, which appear to be new taxes and promising to maintain services like libraries and snow removal without raising revenue, God will deliver her. And how will God deliver her from her evil enemies, she believes that the voters will follow God’s leadership and deliver her from the mouths of these hungry lions. I’ll leave the rest up to your imagination – that is the fate of her enemies.
The reason I decided to speak out is that I saw the mayor using biblical imagery inappropriately. She’s drawing the line between good and evil and putting herself in the middle. Whether or not you agree with the mayor on taxes or even gay marriage isn’t the point. Ask yourself why she’s using this kind of imagery; why is she holding herself up as the righteous victim of evil plotters. I think this raises question of character that need to be taken into consideration. I’m also speaking out because she is attacking the men and women who work hard – the “big government bureaucrats” at city hall that make sure our streets are plowed in winter, safe and secure day and night, provide educational and recreational services, attract businesses to the city, and more. The mayor doesn’t do this work. She’s running the city. She’s one vote on the City Council. But the people who work for the city, the people who work for us, do so as efficiently and as effectively as just about any city work force, which is why this city is honored by Money Magazine as a great place to live and work.
The use of this imagery raises questions as to whether she can work effectively with the employees of this city, including the new City Manager. Therefore, it’s up to us, the voters of this city to decide whether she is fit to serve in this important symbolic role on our behalf. Although the mayor doesn’t run the city, the way the city is perceived both inside and outside the boundaries of the community is often reflected by how the mayor is perceived. And as for me, she is not the righteous victim standing up for the things of God – whether or not I’m in agreement with her political views.

I received this odious document in the mail as well. Thank you Pastor Cornwall for your analysis of the biblical imagry, one of the many offensive things in this mailing. Her misuse of the english language was also offensive (you would think someone would check grammar/spelling), but I digress.
What I found most disturbing is her continuing spread of misinformation about gay people. She printed links to the American Family Association, a known antigay extremist group whose members have advocated making being gay illegal. This group is well known for taking junk science, or real science and purposely mistating it, to attack gay people. And the mayor is using them as a reference source.
She also printed a youtube link that links to nothing (?).
She also posted a link to the Atlantic that goes nowhere. However, the boldface type in the link that leads nowhere is "gay-disease" obviously designed to imply that gay = disease. If you go the Atlantic website (please do, don't take my word) and search for "gay disease" the first story is about how AIDS is still a problem in the gay male community, mostly due to the sad state of public health education.

She also printed a link to the CDC website topic area for AIDS. I wonder if she even knows gay women are at less risk for AIDS than straight men? But I digress again. The truth is, gay or straight, if you engage in unprotected sex with multiple partners you are at greater risk for all sorts of bad news, and you don't have to be gay to behave in this way.
This document in no way justifies or supports her awful statements, and only demonstrates futher her willingness to spread false information about a group of people who are already dumped on, on a regular basis. This kind of nonsense spread by a sitting mayor is reprehensible. Some of the people she is supposed to be representing are gay. Some the kids who live here have gay parents. Business owners and homebuyers are gay, would they want to move here with a mayor like this? What about businesses who want to recruit employees who to work for them, even if they might happen to be gay?
Troy cannot afford to have an antigay extremist as mayor. I firmly believe that the citizens of Troy will overwhelmingly speak loudly against this kind offensive behavior on election day.

Hate the sin, love the sinner. Janice Daniel's brief FB comment about the homosexual lifestyle was made long before she became Mayor. A small minority inappropriately jumped on it for their selfish purposes, and with a megaphone has tried to embarrass and flog the community and the Mayor for their cause. There is nothing she can say or do to get them to move on. It serves their selfish agenda and the good of Troy be damned. It is not extremist to uphold the Michigan Constitution and its Marriage Amendment that was approved by 59% of the voters. The voters will see through this and vote NO on the recall.

Thank you Rev. Cornwall for your insightful commentary on Janice Daniels. As a RECALL JANICE DANIELS supporter, I have personally experienced this attitude from her and her team. She believes she is the victim and that anyone who disagrees with her is evil and should be minimized, removed and yes thrown in the Lion's Den. It is her disrespect for people who disagree with her that caused me to pick up the "RECALL JD PIN". Politics was not involved. It is as simple as humans treating other humans with respect and dignity. As the Mayor of our fine City, she has failed.

It is about disrespecting the election process and the voters of Troy. Of the recall petition the signers, 8,894 signatures were certified. Of these, 4,217 (47%) voted in Nov 2011, 4,677 (53%) did not vote. Those who failed to vote have the audacity to demand another vote. This is at its base, about dirty politics. Dear Daffy (the name is your conclusion, not mine). I would respect the Voter's mandate and give the elected officials some time to settle into their jobs and become effective. The sour grapes poor losers started harassing Mayor Daniels before she was even sworn in. Despite the disrespect and constant badgering Mayor Janice Daniels has been the lady and conducted the meetings and her conduct with exemplary decorum and propriety. It reminds me of the knee-jerk left wing politics that tried to label Ronald Reagan a neanderthal and called him almost every name possible. The recall conduct of some of the advocates has been rude, nasty, juvenile. One even had to be removed by the police for trying to harass volunteers reviewing the recall petitions. This is what Occupy and Acorn and union boss politics look like. Democracy by intimidation. That won't fly in Troy as we will see with a resounding NO vote on the recall.

Then you ought to respect the voters mandate for the recall, otherwise you are picking and choosing hypocritically.
The mayor was not a lady when she gave false antigay information to high school kids and repeated them on the radio. She has conducted meeting with so little propriety that slander occurred at the last council meeting.
The recall is based on facts: what she has said and done as mayor. It is curious that you are chiding anyone with all the irrational name calling your posts are filled with. and who cares about all the completely unrelated Fox News talking points you throw in. They are meaningless and have nothing to do with the recall, because the recall is supported across the political spectrum.
The voters see through this nonsense and I am confident they will support the recall.

We shall see, Daffy. If enemies had not elevated an old FB posting it would have never entered the discussion. That was hateful misuse to propagate a particular political agenda. That you do not agree with established statistics on the gay issue is being in denial. In any event, even traditional marriage folks and those who remain single for a variety of reasons, would not wish harm upon those choosing a different lifestyle. We donate millions each year to aids and other VD research, and are taxed billions each year to protect people from their promiscuous lifestyle. And unfortunately tens of thousands of children are murdered each year through abortion from those who procreate but do not honor the offspring they created. The protagonists raised and perpetuate the issue, and went out of the community to raise money for their recall campaign from gay sources. We know what this is about.

@U.R.A. Fool
You insinuate that HIV/AIDS is primarily a "gay" problem, but that is not true. It is a risky behavior problem (for gays and straights). From the CDC, "Heterosexuals accounted for 27% of estimated new HIV infections [in the US] in 2009 and 28% of people living [in the US] with HIV infection in 2008." While gay men accounted for "49% of people living [in the US] with HIV infection in 2008". http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/resources/factsheets/PDF/HIV_at_a_glance.pdf
We know risky behavior is what puts people at a higher risk of contracting STDs, not their sexual orientation. While it is true that gay men are disproportionately affected by HIV in the US, it is also true that gay women are among the least affected groups. Believe it or not, straight people can get HIV like anyone else. HIV is not a "gay man's disease" and actually affects a greater number of heterosexuals worldwide than homosexuals. Africa suffers from a massive epidemic and the majority of the people are straight. ( http://www.avert.org/women-hiv-aids.htm#contentTable0 ). I'd suspect having little or no access to protection is how it spread to so many.
Anyone, gay or straight, who lives a monogamous lifestyle is far less likely to contract HIV/AIDS than someone who leads a promiscuous lifestyle. (These are the appropriate uses of the word "lifestyle").

Mr. Cornwall (for a person advocating gay marriage contrary to the State constitution - is that name real, or a joke?) needs to be a bit more accurate. Mayor Daniels has supported City employees but as any good leader, has the obligation to represent the taxpayers and citizens of Troy in offering corrections where appropriate. If a city manager or any other employee withholds or misrepresents information vital to conduct of city business, of course it needs to be corrected. That is not an attack. You have surely read her "queers" facebook post and seen who she associates with (David Wisz, Paul Smith, Gordon Shepke). Just what is your definition of bigotry?
Further, do you deny that she attacked John Szerlag in her 20-minute speech, showing complete ignorance of city government procedure (refuted, point by point), causing even L. Brooks Patterson to come to Szerlag's defense? Do you know Daniel's voting against the transit center would only deny Troy an $8.5 million investment--a vote against improving the city she governs?
Being against tax increases doesn't make you fiscally responsible--it just means you've got one simplistic answer to every problem. She sat through this year's budget meetings and said not one word? She offered nothing to the council's discussion except to vote against it. Do you support her just because she's religious? Plenty of us are too--and we take great offense to people co-opting religion for political gain. If an employer needs to correct an employee is that an attack? I think not. If an appointee is not responsive and responsible to the officials elected by We The People, calling them out is fair game. It is good and prudent management. Any money you take from the Feds first has to be taxed, Government on any level has no money until they take it from us. They take out half and return the balance with strings attached. Usually the strings require never ending constant local expenditures. If it is not truly needed (60 passengers a day?) it seems prudent to give this some real serious thought. I did not receive the 4 page mailer and if I did, chances are I would not read it. 4 pages, really? Haven't we heard and read enough about Janice Daniels over the last year?
I also find the NO Recall signs to be funny. Yes, they do look like the YES Recall signs. At the southwest corner of Square Lake and Livernois there are 2 YES signs and in between those 2 signs is a NO sign. At first it looked like 3 YES signs but when I noticed how the nice harvest decorations put up by the gas station were cluttered by political signs, I noticed that the middle sign was not a YES sign.
Ironic that the fire station open house was mentioned, my thoughts yesterday was too bad they cannot ban politics at the open house or maybe they need to change the date so it's not so close to an election. The mailing left me both angry and confused and your words, Pastor Cornwall, brought clarity. I am most appalled by Daniels depiction of our dedicated Troy City employees as vicious, hungry lions. My thanks to each for the work you do each day to make the city we share so wonderful. I'll do my part by voting "yes" to the recall.

Not the city employees, Maureen. It appears to be a small special interest group who cannot accept their rejection by the voters of Troy last November. They still want to control, or destroy, the city. It is utterly disgraceful.

I was appalled once again to see that she continues to embarrass herself. She can't be recalled soon enough to suit me! It will be the absolute best part of November for the City of Troy-Janice Daniels needs to be recalled-we can't allow her to remain in a position where she uses it to project her personal agenda.

Mayor Daniels is entitled to state her personal opinion. She done nothing to hurt the city and, in fact, has been steady at the wheel. Troy has begun to lead the economic recovery in Michigan. The new jobs for our city is very impressive. City union folks attacking her should understand Troy business recovery means job security for City workers. Myopic and narrow minded special interests should be soundly rejected on November 6. Vote NO on the recall.

The mailing being discussed DID NOT EVEN COME FROM MAYOR JANICE DANIELS! The words and images are not hers. But, the truth does not seem to matter here, eh? We are insulted by the in-the-face disrespect and constant badgering of those who cannot take a loss at the polls and let a victorious opponent have a chance to serve. More than half the signers of the infamous petitions did not even bother to vote. Having not shown up, they want to undo what the voters decided. Hot outrageous and unfair!
The good Pastor has a proclivity towards a lifestyle that is currently not legal in Michigan and certainly contrary to the lessons and Word of God in the Holy Bible one assumes is used in his Church, Look at the post on his Church blog:

As a so-called Christian pastor he should understand God's word on this, and not critique a fellow Christian who merely relates the lessons we are all given. Mayor Daniels, from all I can see, is tolerant of other lifestyles but when asked,
The bigot is: "a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially: one who regards or treats the members of a group with hatred and intolerance." The mailing being discussed came from No Troy Recall, and the street address listed for this PAC on the "Michigan Department of State: Statement of Oranization Form for Independent and Political Committees (PAC'S)" is the Mayor's home address. So yes, this came from Mayor Daniels. What's insulting is that you are trying to persuade people into believing that her hands are clean in this. I'm also curious how you know that "half of the signers of the infamous petitions did not even bother to vote." Did you verify the voting record of each of the 8300+ signatures?
As far as your personal attacks on Pastor Cornwall, you really should be ashamed of yourself. I don't think the Pastor has a "proclivity towards a lifestyle that is currently not legal in Michigan", but rather does not believe perpetuating hate against anyone. Also, it is not illegal to be gay, only for gays to marry, which I suspect will change soon. I submit that you are the "so-called Christian" here. The Pastor spoke out against hate and intolerance, just as Jesus did, and you publicly condemn him for that. I don't know what lessons you and the Mayor were taught, but I was taught that we are all children of God and that we should love our neighbor, regardless of their transgressions. I did not learn that I should slur people, appeal to fear & hate, and spread lies that were debunked years ago.

I believe it was Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego who refused to bow to the idol, and were thrown into the fiery furnace. Daniel on the other hand was accused for continuing to pray to God during an edict that forbade praying to any god or man but King Darius for a 30-day period, and was thrown into the lion's den.
Which is too bad because bowing to the idol would make the analogy more apt -- the idol of secularism is raised up, Daniels refuses to bow to it, and is put to an ordeal. But still not a bad analogy. I don't agree with Daniels' politics, but the analogy is pretty good.
Bob Cornwall
9:47 am on Tuesday, October 9, 2012
Chuck, you're right -- Daniel was accused of praying to a god other than the king for 30 days rather than to the idol itself. It happens on occasion. But the point is -- the analogy between the mayor as righteous victim and city hall (employees) being the evil ones is still at the center of this.

Mr. Cornwall perpetuates an erroneous tale that Mayor Daniels is pitted against the City employees. She has stated several time that most of them are providing great services to the City. She has praised the police and fire service, applauded the recognition of the Sanitary department, thanked the interim City Manager, openly welcomed the new City manager, etc., etc., etc. To keep perpetuating a false impression is folly and unfair. The tremendous growth in jobs and development, huge increases in building permits, increases in property value all point to the fact that Troy is leading Michigan's recovery. Mayor Daniels deserves some of the credit for that

I disagree with Pastor Cornwall’s interpretation of the image. I think he reads too much into it. I think the imagery is actually very appropriate. The Daniel of old was a God fearing person like Mayor Daniels is. Daniel was unjustly attacked, just as Mayor Daniels. They even have the same name. I don’t interpret City Hall as the enemy in the image. Don’t forget King Darius supported Daniel but found himself helpless because of the treachery of Daniel’s enemies. For me, the image brought to mind Daniel 6:4-5 which reads:
“At this, the administrators and Satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent. Finally, these men said, “We’ll never find any basis for charges against this man Daniel unless it has something to do with the law of his God”.

This fits Mayor Daniel’s situation perfectly. Her political opponents lost the general election. Unwilling to accept this lost they are now abusing the recall process. They could find no corruption or charges so they just simply made some up.
Take for example, the transit center. I went to the notroyrecall.org website and read the actual verbiage on the ballot. It says Mayor Daniels opposed the transit center. You are allowed to freely agree or disagree with that. However, it is no basis for recall. Refusing government money can never be a crime. This recall sets a dangerous precedent. What if both parties tried recalls every time they lost an election? Basically, we would have to have elections every two years instead of four. We elected Mayor Daniel’s for four years. We should let her serve her term. Even if you do not agree with her policies, you can see that having a recall with no grounds other than personal prejudice is setting a very dangerous precedent for the future.
People should be aware that Troy is being used as a model. If the recall is successful, then this will be tried elsewhere, guaranteed! I am voting no to Recall.

11:26 am on Wednesday, October 10, 2012
The recall of Mayor Daniels will not result in an avalanche of recalls elsewhere. Why not? Because recalls are attempted all the time and seldom reach the ballot because it is so difficult to obtain the signatures needed when people don't agree that a recall is needed. Just ask Councilman Dave Henderson who researched how to recall Mayor Schilling, but gave up before he even got started because he decided that it was too hard and complicated and had very little chance of succeeding.
The Silent Majority

Recalls are not attempted as often as they would if this one is passed. This recall is not just a regular recall, it is a recall based on prejudices, which means that now everyone can recall their mayor just because they do not like them. This is clearly dangerous. It was created to get evil people out of office, but it is so abused now that we can get even good and descent people out.
This is our current situation: what started as a small group spread their deceitful message to a big group, and they have been pounding an innocent new mayor with anything they can say to try to get her out. These people, who lost the previous election are just bitter and, as everyone knows, bitterness spreads far quicker than truth.

That is a mischaracterization. What is deceitful? Her own words? I have listened to the tapes and she is anything but innocent. The recall is not based on prejudices, it is based on the mayors actions as mayor.
Spreading lies about a group of marginalized people is anything but good and decent.
The fact is 8,800 people have spoke loudly to say her conduct as mayor is unacceptable, as is their constitutional right. There is an extremely high bar to get a recall on the ballot, which is why they are so rare. One succeeding does not mean others are likely. You are just fear mongering based on no evidence.
The Silent Majority
9:15 am on Thursday, October 11, 2012
Daffy, I believe I am not "fearmongering", and here is why. There are 8,800 people that signed the petition. Most of those signiatures were gathered by ten people. Which tells me one thing: this started small and the driving force and teeth behind this recall is still that small group. I do not disagree the constitutionality of it, but the timing and situation we have is not one worthy of a recall. Recalls are there to get people who have done terrible things (embezzleing money, infidelity, lying to the public) out of office. Our current mayor is guiltfree there. If you don't like her, wait, (like everyone else since our country's foundings) and try to take her out in the next election. But having a recall only causes division in the city, and sets a dangerous precedent.

However many people collected signatures (not sure how you know who collected which signatures) an enormous number of people support the recall or else they wouldn't have signed. That is not a small cadre.
You are absolutely wrong about recalls. There is another procedure for criminal behavior called removal. Recalls can be for ANY reason but only have any chance of succeeding if there is massive support to get them on the ballot. In this case there a huge number of peole believe the mayor has done such a bad job that she should be removed. If one recall succeeds it does not make any other more likely.

Silent,
You can research the numbers, but recall attempts are fairly numerous in Michigan, dozens or more each year, for all sorts of reasons. Some make it on the ballot, but you'll find that in fact most are ultimately unsuccessful. So your concern is actually no big deal - recalls have been used a fair amount before this one and will continue after this one. And in Michigan, citizen recalls cannot be used to remove officers for criminal or other judicial reasons.

Thank you, Bob Cornwall for addressing this. To portray our City Hall and city employees as something that needs to be fought is a troubling leadership style. This has been Ms. Daniels' approach since she was the spokesperson for the TCU group that fought the piddly 1.9 millage increase proposal of February 2010. She continued it with her slanderous attack on the staff as Mayor in January 2012. And now she willfully perpetuates the idea of the staff that serves the community with excellence is one we need her to fight. I respectfully disagree with that approach. These are the people who ensure our very city infrastructure is safe and secure and ready to serve our needs. They are educated, trained, and very committed to their jobs. We need a Mayor who wants to work WITH city hall. This mailer provides a great deal of insight as to her leadership style and why three more years of it is a very risky prospect. Voters need to ask themselves, is this the leadership style that will put an end to the divisiveness in Troy?

@The Silent Majority
Recalls are part of the established laws; so there is no bypassing, only utilizing of the laws.
MI Recall Proceedures: “Laws shall be enacted to provide for the recall of all elective officers except judges of courts of record upon petition of electors equal in number to 25 percent of the number of persons voting in the last preceding election for the office of governor in the electoral district of the officer sought to be recalled. The sufficiency of any statement of reasons or grounds procedurally required shall be a political rather than a judicial question.”
You are correct, there are still people that will fight for the good of our country/city and those people organized the recall effort. No one was guilted into giving their signature. They only had to listen to what the Mayor said (from her own mouth) and watch her actions and decide for themselves if she was wrong or not. Apparently, 8800+ people disapprove of her performance. Now, attempting to guilt people into not exercising their legal rights, that is what is not patriotic. Those people who believe the government (the Mayor) is accountable for their words/actions/performance, and have decided to place the job back on the ballot, those people are the example of citizens holding government accountable.

First off, recalls are not for criminal activity. In fact, the Michigan Constitution specifically prohibits recall for "judicial" reasons, and specifies they must be for "political" reasons. There are other procedures for criminal activity in the charter (removal).
Also, nothing on the petition is about her Facebook comment.
She has every right to say whatever she wants. It is the citizens' right to hold elected officials accountable for their words and actions.
People have different reasons for supporting the recall. For me, the main reason is that during her office hours she spoke false antigay rhetoric to high school kids. She repeated them on the radio. She mailed them to my house. False rhetoric like she has spouted has the effect of reinforcing false sterotypes and is used to justify unfair treatment of many kinds. It also is hostile to gay people. I'm not gay, but I don't want my city to be seen as hostile to anyone.
Whatever anyone may think about gay people, it is wrong for our mayor to spread false information about a group of socially marginalized people. Gay people live and work in Troy, kids in Troy have gay parents, there are gay business owners, perspective homebuyers are gay. The mayor is acting inappropriately by making any of these people feel unwelcome.
That's the main reason for me as to "Why Recall?"

It's a character issue for me. Watching city council meetings this past year has shown me what service as Mayor or city council member means. It involves level-headedness, fairness, common sense and often compromise, especially when there are multi-faceted issues, and competing interests which are at odds with each other. I am thinking of not only the prominent issues of the Transit Center and the budget, but also tax abatements to encourage business growth and resident complaint issues like the IB academy traffic problems and the future Big Beaver/Alpine plaza. These are issues that deserve serious consideration and there are not cut and dried answers for them found in the Constitution or in a political ideology (continued)....

Mayor Daniels in her 1 year term so far has shaken my confidence in her ability to handle the role to which she was elected, i.e., level-headedness, fairness, common sense, and compromise are not adjectives which could be applied to her performance, instead I see plenty of posturing, ego, an unfortunate tendency to grab onto the media spotlight, and to create controversy. As far as I can see she uses hot-button divisive social issues to defend/promote herself. We do not need a “hyperbolic”, “edgy” (Mayor Daniel’s description of herself) and out-there person in this mundane and unglamorous but vitally important job. Being gay is not inherently dangerous. Promiscuous unprotected sexual behavior is dangerous and increases the risk for all sorts of bad things. Being promiscuous and having unsafe sex does not equal being gay. Straight people engage in those behaviors as well. AIDS is also not a gay disease. A huge % of new infections in the US are hetero, and worldwide the vast majority of people with AIDS are hetero.

@JustMe
You keep saying that "being gay is more dangerous than being hetero" and that is just not true. What facts are you basing that on? If you say, "hello, AIDS", then you're ignorant to the fact that "heteros" account for the majority of infections worldwide. HIV/AIDS is indiscriminate to sexual orientation and is the result of risky behavior (unprotected sex, sharing needles, etc.), period.
I'm unaware of the Founders "anti-gay comments". Do you have examples? The Founders were not perfect people and very well could have been bigots. You realize they were also racist and owned slaves, right? They determined that slaves were only worth 3/5 of a person, until the Civil War and the 13th Amendment (Washington, Franklin, Jefferson, Madison and many others owned slaves).
As far as the Mayor goes, no, I don't respect her for clinging to her bigoted views and injecting them into the public. If she wants to be a bigot in her personal life, that's her business, but she has presented these ideas in office (the same ones you are pushing here) and every respected medical expert disagrees with both of you. It's one thing to cling to a policy or economic idea, it's quite another to slander and demonize a group with falsehoods and stand by that.
I wish I could give her credit for one good thing she's done, but I can't think of one. Maybe her "Mayor for a Day" contest with the kids, but that doesn't help the city.

Um...It is in no way her business to express an opinion on the topic. No matter what her opinion. It can alienate and divide people. As she has done. It is not her job to do that.
Being gay is not more dangerous than being hetero. What are you talking about?
I couldn't possibly care less about your absurd position regarding the righteousness of being anti gay. Your biblical interpretations are meaningless. My opinion is being a good person means you aren't anti anyone. A lot of people think being antigay is profoundly unchristian.
The founders, some of whom owned slaves? Yes they were bigots. It was a different time then. Our society has progressed a little since, for some people.
What you call 'courage' I call bullheaded stubbornness, and a refusal to admit wrong in the face of ridiculously inappropriate behavior. I don't think the national media has seen her actions as heroic perseverence. Where are you getting that?
I don't see the 8,800 people who signed the recall petition as an outspoken minority.

@JustMe
I'll also answer your other questions:
1. Why would you recall her? For her gay comment?
Yes, as one of the reasons. We all have the freedom of speech, where the government cannot punish us for our speech, but we are also accountable for that speech. As an elected official, she is pushing damaging misinformation and is being held accountable by those she governs.
2. Why would you recall a Mayor over political opinion? (like the transit center)
Per the MI State Constitution, Recalls are used to remove elected officials for poor political decisions, not criminal behavior. So yes, I'd support recalling her for the way she handled the transit center discussions (using racism, bigotry, & fear) in addition to baseless fiscal arguments.
3. For keeping the library open longer?
She moved the closed day from Sat to Fri, which keeps the library open the same amount of time and costs the city an additional $35,000/yr. (http://troy.patch.com/articles/troy-public-library-to-offer-saturday-hours-will-cease-friday-operations)
She really has done nothing positive for the City of Troy. If you can name one good thing (that's true) then I might revise that statement.
The US Constitution does not allow for recalls, but the MI Constitution does, as long as it is based on political reasons, not judicial reasons. She has committed no crimes, which is why people have gone the recall route, otherwise she would be prosecuted like another recent Mayor of Detroit.

Cookiepro2 I think a genuine person who is not a career politician might be given some time to develop the smooth tongue you apparently want. For me, someone who speaks from the heart and is transparent, even if we do not always agree with him/her, is infinitely preferable to a lying politician. I like transparency, and I like having a real human being as Mayor. Now, perhaps if you can tempt her with one of those famous cookies (or are yours the computer cookie?) and some friendly advice, she might respond very nicely. The constant badgering is a no-win situation. I doubt any of us would react better in the same circumstances?

To be sure, it has been easy to see who she is, and what she stands for...sorry, I just don't like the view. I do see she has certain personal qualities to be valued. One is her steadfast, albeit misplaced, loyalty, to the ulta-right wing Tea Party, (which I think is bad for our city, YMMV) and to her friend Paul Smith (who has problems of his own as Sterling Heights council member). continued,

However whatever her sterling qualities I don't think it makes for good governance.
She's not a good working representative of the conservative cause. What good does her voting do if it is always against the majority? A true leader would be pragmatic and work for compromise. When you're between a rock and a hard place with opposing sides you need to come up with a common sense solution that gets SOME consensus all around. That's good governance, not "my way or the highway" attitude. Take the transit center, we're still getting it..but what bitterness sown by her grandstanding position paper. Yes, she got to vent, but at what cost. Maturity involves looking three steps ahead and looking at consequences. And governance is not war, but building bridges. I also don't care for the "Janice Daniels will never vote for taxes or tax increases". To me that smacks of politicking. I might want a tax increase if it means maintaining my No.1 priority as a resident, safety, not a decimated police force in the interests of a penny pinching, grandstanding Mayor & city council. It is troubling that she was the only NO vote on the current budget which had a nominal increase (pass through from Tringali) on refuse collection.

cookie, last I saw Troy has a huge fund balance and has collected about two million dollars a year in taxes more than expenditures. Barring a huge catastrophe there should be no need to raise taxes. What was lacking in the previous administration was integrity and transparency. Threatening to close the library was a terrible bluff, but they bludgeoned the taxpayers with it. Then after the millage was passed on the third try, low and behold they find a slug of cash hidden away. Who wants to go back to those days? Vote NO on the recall for Sanity and honesty on City Council. There is a new "sheriff" in town, and we need her.

You clearly missed the latest budget sessions, then, if this is how you see things. Without an increase in revenue, that "huge" fund balance will be depleted in five years. Revenue can come from a rise in property values...it may well happen. But if the cuts achieved by the previous administration had not occurred, we'd be in even WORSE shape.
As to the comment about "low and behold they find a slug of cash," again, reality shows that to be a rather misinformed statement. Anyone paying attention KNEW there would be some cost savings realized from some early retirements. What was unknown until that process concluded was how much...and the result was NOT enough to fund a library ongoing through the years.
Vote YES to stop this type of inaccurate spin. This new sheriff has shown she is unable to understand and manage a city like Troy -- said so herself. She finds the budget "overwhelming," and she complained she didn't have enough time to understand it. Umm...well, time to step down, Mayor.

I am puzzled, if there was "a slug of cash hidden away" why didn't Mayor Daniels lead the charge on giving us a refund of taxes?
Also, I may be mistaken but aren't the city's books audited by an independent accounting firm periodically? And with the city's checkbook online (accomplished just before the start of Daniels's tenure) wouldn't it be even more difficult to hide/embezzle/misuse funds?
One more thing, that "huge fund balance" is what is enabling the city to have a balanced 5 year budget, no? Meanwhile it's important to encourage new businesses to come and occupy our vacant commercial buildings, and current businesses stay to rebuild our tax base...as well as keeping up our fine city services so that Troy remains an attractive location for people to move to. I honestly think Troy is on the right track for economic recovery, I just don't want a loose cannon possibly gumming up the works.

Aren't we also so perfect and judgmental! You can all do so much better, so you think. Fly specking every comment, every sentence, every word. But you didn't run and you didn't win. Judge not, lest ye be judged. Mayor Daniels was goaded into addressing the gay issue. Perhaps it didn't belong in the discourse of city business. Be that the case. those who brought it out and constantly pressed it, now hypocritically complain that it did come up and did get discussed. Can't put that genie back in the bottle, but any decent respectable person would move on and give her a second chance. I think she conducts meeting with perfect class, despite the fact that she may not have the slick performance of a trained politician. I kind of like that. Slick people in style, are frequently slick in affairs, business and personal. Give me transparency, honesty, someone who acts and votes on the issues and positions she ran on. Rough edges, if you believe she has them, will smooth out in short order. Refreshing. Worth keeping. NO on the recall!

The irony of a person with the screen name U. R. A. Fool crying, "judge not, lest ye be judged" is just too precious. Janice Daniels could have made this all go away months ago by saying, "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done it. It won't happen again." and then kept her mouth shut afterwards. But she put herself in a hole and just kept digging. Now, we will make it all go away by recalling her this November. Vote YES to Recall Mayor Daniels.

U.R.A. Fool: For someone who leads with this moniker, you really don't have room to talk about others being judgemental. VOTE YES TO RECALL JANICE DANIELS!

Seriously, for you to be saying "judge not..." Is completely hilarious, and knee bucklingly hypocritical. Some of things you have posted here...phew! Telling me to move to Ferndale because you thought I was gay for one.
I don't agree she was goaded during her office hours, but even if she was: she was not goaded by a friendly radio host, or in her campaign materials. It is difficult to move on when she keeps bringing it up.
It is interesting that you find 'rough edges' endearing. I find competence endearing. I see no sign of smoothness after a year.
I never implied I was perfect, but I am also not the mayor. If I offend a great many people unnecessarily, I apologize and I make an effort not to repeat it. She has done neither. And by the way, is bringing up the truth and facts 'fly specking'?
