Help Troy Families in Need this Season with Food & Gift Donations

The Troy Police Department and VFW Post 4037 are teaming up with Troy People Concerned and the Troy School District to help local families have a brighter, happier holiday this year.

This information was provided by the Troy Police Department/City of Troy.

Every year, the Troy Police Department and Troy VFW Post 4037 co-sponsor a Holiday Food & Gift Drive. We receive the names of residents in Troy who are in need of assistance during the holidays. These family names are provided via Troy People Concerned and the Troy School District.

This assistance includes food as well as gifts. Area businesses adopt families and donate gifts and their time to better the holidays for these needy families. The Troy Police Department and VFW Post 4037 assemble food and gifts for delivery in time for Christmas. VFW Post member and Troy resident Charlie Solis started the Food/Gift Drive 18 years ago.

This partnership with the VFW Post, Troy People Concerned, and area businesses reflects Troy Police Department’s mission to partner with the community and organizations to “enhance the quality of life in our community.”

These past few years the impact of a negative economy has affected many families and adversely reduced government revenue and services. The department has experienced significant staff reductions and has had to reassess some of the services we have been able to provide, including several of our community service projects.

Given the tradition and positive impact this project represents to not only the men and women of the Troy Police Department, the Troy VFW Post, and the community in general, it is our intent to remain committed to the program this holiday season, however we will scale back our involvement somewhat from past years. There are still other resources in the greater Troy community to assist those who normally would be receiving assistance during this holiday season and Troy People Concerned will still be a referral source to match donors with recipients.

Non-perishable food can be dropped off at the Troy VFW Post (2375 E. Maple Rd.) during business hours. Money donations are accepted and needed for perishable food purchases, but we ask they be in the form of a check made out to the “Troy VFW Post 4037” (not the Police Department). Checks can be dropped off at the Police Department or the VFW Post.

For many businesses and families seeking to share their blessings this time of year, it has become a holiday tradition to sponsor a person or family. We will match your ability to assist with an appropriate needy family. The date for this year’s delivery is Thursday, Dec. 13. The Police Department and VFW Post 4037 oversee the deliveries to the families. We keep those we assist in complete confidence.
