A Look Inside at Beaumont Troy's New Cancer Center

has opened a $12.5 million inpatient oncology unit with 44 private rooms to meet the growing need for cancer care at the hospital and in northern Oakland and Macomb counties.

The 44,000-square-foot unit has many patient-centered amenities such as: adjustable temperature and lighting; built-in computer stations for bedside charting; Wi-Fi, an Internet-equipped TV entertainment system with access to movies and care information.

Recognizing the important role of families in cancer care, the unit  includes two family- style living rooms with a resource center, fireplace and visitor pantry; two private sleep rooms for family/caregivers; and a physical therapy gym for patients requiring rehabilitation as part of their care.

“The unit is designed to bring patients and caregivers together in a warm and comforting environment where patients can be provided with a comprehensive range of high quality cancer care and support services,” says Eric Brown, M.D., director of Oncology Services and the Breast Care Center at Beaumont, Troy. “Through thoughtful design, the unit gives patients and their families a space that is supportive and healing during a difficult time in their lives.”

In addition to cancer care, the new unit also provides hospital care, including pain and symptom control, for patients of community-based, state-licensed hospice programs.

On the new unit, Beaumont, Troy cancer specialists collaborate in developing care plans to achieve the best patient outcomes through a range of treatments, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, combination therapies, surgery, palliative care, rehabilitation and supportive care.

The unit was constructed and furnished with green principles in mind. Furniture, flooring and plastic laminate are “Greenguard certified” for healthy indoor air quality. Recycled/recyclable materials were utilized in solid surface countertops, rubber wall base and patient room flooring. The unit’s lighting is designed for energy savings and minimal patient disruption, including occupancy sensors, dimmable LED lighting in nursing alcoves and natural light from large windows.

Signs, artwork and a majority of the unit’s furnishings were manufactured within 500 miles of the Troy campus, which not only helps the local economy, but saves energy and reduces pollution by reducing the distance for transporting materials.

The new unit complements a $14.1 million outpatient radiation oncology unit opened in February at Beaumont, Troy which features the latest technology for planning and delivering radiation cancer treatment.

Located in an expanded cancer center on the hospital’s Sterling Heights campus, the radiation oncology unit includes two advanced linear accelerators and a CT simulator to enhance treatment precision while reducing treatment time.
