What's your most popular product or service?

Private piano lessons are by far our most highly-requested service. Out of our near 500 students, about half are studying piano.

What's a fact about your business that most customers probably don't know?

Most people probably don’t know that Expressions actually teaches quite a few adult beginning students! Many adults are self-conscious about starting music lessons, especially if they have never done so before, but it is never too late to start learning an instrument, and at Expressions, you certainly would not be alone in that journey.

When was the business founded?

Expressions was first founded in Novi in September 2010 and is now opening its second location in Troy in January 2014.

How did your business come to be?

Opening a music school has been my dream since I started teaching piano lessons as a teenager. After graduating college with a piano performance degree in 2009, I started my own small piano studio in Novi out of my dad’s home. The studio quickly grew to over 40 students in about 9 months and I began to realize that my dream of starting a full-scale music school could possibly become a reality. I began to eat, sleep, and breathe this new realization and spent every spare moment researching, crunching numbers, and writing business plans. With the help of several key players, I leased and transformed an office space into a beautiful facility, hired a handful of instructors, distributed 20,000 fliers, launched a website, and told all my students we were moving!

Why did you choose the area you did?

Opening my first Expressions location in Novi was an obvious choice for me because I assumed that the rapid growth of my private home piano studio was partially a result of the rich education-focused and family community of Novi. In determining where to open our second location, I chose Troy because it is very similar to Novi in many ways including demographic, household size and income, and a high priority on education.
