Headed Out to Shop? You'll Have Lots of Company

More than half Americans surveyed planned to be out shopping today. What about you?

Whether you have gifts to return or those gift cards are burning a hole in your pocket, chances are a majority of you will be headed out shopping at some point today, according to a survey by American Express.

Fifty-seven percent of Americans said they would shop the day after Christmas this year, compared with 43 percent last year.

Among the top reasons people planned to shop on Dec. 26:

  • Take advantage of sales to buy something for themselves: 36 percent
  • Cash in gift cards received: 22 percent

The retail research firm ShopperTrak predicts that foot traffic on Dec. 26 at brick-and-mortar stores will be up 60 percent compared with the day after Christmas in 2010, according to a report in Time's Moneyland.

According to the International Business Times, stores such as Target, Walmart and Best Buy are among the best places for bargains today, with Target offering $10 off a $50 order and Walmart and Best Buy offering electronics at a discount.

But IBT also notes that J. Crew will have an 80 percent sale on all fall items, and the Gap has everything storewide at least 30 percent off today.
