Walsh College Takes Home ACG Cup for Fourth Time in Seven Years

Walsh College announced today that its team took first place in the seventh annual Association for Corporate Growth (ACG) Detroit Cup hosted at the Troy Marriott on February 13. This is the second consecutive year and fourth time in the seven year history of the competition that Walsh College has won.

The ACG Cup is a case study competition designed to give students from leading MBA programs across the country practical experience and invaluable insights into mergers and acquisitions, investment banking, financial advising and private equity. This year’s event was sponsored by Ernst & Young.

The Walsh team defeated two other MBA teams from the Eli Broad College of Business at Michigan State University, and the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan.

Walsh’s teams have finished first or second since the ACG Detroit competition began in 2008, marking itself as the most successful team in the competition’s history. Walsh College also placed first in 2008, 2011, and 2013, and placed second in 2009, 2010, and 2012.

“Walsh students take comprehensive, strategic approaches to business education. The Walsh team followed that path exceptionally against the high-level competition displayed in the ACG Cup competition,” said Stephanie Bergeron, president and CEO, Walsh College. “I am proud they demonstrated the critical collaboration, communication, and commitment skills vital to business success in any organization to the judging panel.”

As part of the competition, three teams composed of two to four graduate business students, were given a real business case to analyze. On Thursday, they presented their final findings and recommendations to a panel of judges. The winning team from Walsh was comprised of three graduate students – Master of Science in Finance (MSF) student Alex Drost (Midland, Mich.), Dual Master of Business Administration and Master of Science in Finance (MBA/MSF) student Jacob Katz (Rochester Hills, Mich.), and MSF student Jordan Werner (West Bloomfield, Mich.).

“Our participation elevated our business knowledge and execution to levels we couldn’t have imagined before the competition," said Jacob Katz, team member. “Walsh’s support and academic rigor prepared us to learn, collaborate, and present more effectively and efficiently in the ACG Cup competition.”

In taking first place, Walsh College received the ACG Detroit Cup and the Walsh team was awarded $4,000.
