Troy Beaumont Named 5th Best Hospital in Metro Detroit

The U.S. News and World Report released their hospital rankings by region and state this week.

This week, U.S. News & World Report named the fifth best hospital in Metro Detroit and the sixth best hospital in Michigan. The hospital also earned a “high-performing” ranking in 11 medical specialties (Cancer, Diabetes & Endocrinology, Ear, Nose and Throat, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Gynecology, Nephrology, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Pulmonology and Urology).

Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak once again ranks among the nation’s “Best Hospitals” in the 23rd annual rankings by U.S. News & World Report. It’s the 18th consecutive year that Beaumont, Royal Oak has been nationally ranked by USNWR. Beaumont, Royal Oak earned a “high-performing” ranking in Cancer and Gynecology and is ranked No. 2 in Michigan and No. 2 in Metro Detroit in the USNWR state and regional rankings. Fewer than 150 hospitals are nationally ranked in at least one of the 16 medical specialties.

Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe also earned a “high-performing” ranking in six medical specialties (Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Nephrology, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Orthopedics and Pulmonology) and ranked 19th in Michigan and 15th in Metro Detroit.

“This strong performance by Beaumont’s hospitals is a tribute to the expertise of our physicians, the outstanding quality of care provided by our nurses and other caregivers, and our commitment to providing leading edge technology and treatments” said Dr. Ananias Diokno, M.D., executive vice president and chief medical officer for Beaumont Health System.

U.S. News Health Rankings editor Avery Comarow said the hospital rankings are like a GPS-type aid to help steer patients to hospitals with strong skills in the procedures and medical conditions that present the biggest challenges.

“All of these hospitals are the kinds of medical centers that should be on your list when you need the best care,” Comarow said. “They are where other hospitals send the toughest cases.”

Of the 16 medical specialties ranked by U.S. News, 12 were evaluated based on measurable data such as death rates, patient volume, nurse staffing, technology and a reputation score based on a physician survey. Four lists were based on reputation scores only.

The rankings are published by U.S. News in collaboration with RTI International, a research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Highlights of the 2012-13 rankings will appear in the U.S. News Best Hospitals 2013 guidebook, to go on sale in August. The complete rankings and methodology are available on the U.S. News website.

Good news for Troy. And hopefully they'll be hiring some new workers, too.
