Christmas is Over – Now What Do I Do With My Tree?

Find out how to recycle your Christmas tree in Troy.

Christmas is officially over, and if you had a real tree this year, you may be scratching your head wondering what to do with it now.

Luckily, Troy residents have more than one option for recycling their Christmas trees.

For two weeks after Christmas, the Troy Department of Public Works will collect your Christmas trees if they are placed curbside.

"Place your tree at the curbside on your regular refuse day," reads the City's website. "Please assure that the cut end of the tree faces the direction of traffic and that all ornaments, tinsel, hooks, etc., are removed. Do not place the tree in a plastic bag." Note: Refuse collection is delayed one day following Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

And if you miss the two-week window for curbside collection, no worries – Oakland County will also accept your Christmas trees at its self-serve Christmas tree recycling locations.

Christmas tree recycling is available at 11 Oakland County Parks from Dec. 26 through Jan. 13, 2013, seven days a week, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. All decorations must be removed from the tree.

Extended collection dates are available at Independence Oaks in Clarkston and Orion Oaks in Orion Township, which will accept Christmas trees until Jan. 27, 2013.

The trees will be processed to make compost and wood chips that will be available to the public free of charge at Orion Oaks County Park in 2013.

Additionally, if you visit DestinationOakland.com and select "Christmas Tree Recycling," you will receive a free white pine tree seedling in the spring from the Oakland Conservation District.
