White Chapel Cemetery Hosts Spring Tulip Photo Contest

Snap a photo of the more than 36,000 varieties of tulips at the cemetery for a chance to win cash prizes.

Area residents don’t have far to travel in order to see a magnificent display of more than 36,000 tulips, which are all starting to bloom at in Troy.

To celebrate the tulips – and spring, in general – White Chapel Memorial Park Cemetery is hosting a tulip-themed photo contest beginning on Monday, April 9 and running through the end of tulip season.

"Our annual display of tulips goes back many years,” David R. Krall, vice president of White Chapel Memorial Park Cemetery, said in a press release. “All of our tulips are imported straight from Holland. We have a few dozen varieties of tulips including many of the newest tulip bulbs in existence.”

In order to be eligible, photos must:

  • Be taken in the White Chapel Memorial Park Cemetery tulip gardens. 
  • Include the tulips (though photos can also include people). 
  • Be uploaded to the cemetery's website, www.whitechapelcemetery.com.  

Once uploaded, anyone can vote for the best photos on the White Chapel Memorial Park Cemetery website, where visitors can also find a tulip garden guide and map.

Photo contest prizes include:

  • First Prize – a $500 Visa gift card and a $500 voucher for service at White Chape.
  • Second Prize – a $200 Visa gift card and a $200 voucher for service at White Chape.
  • Third Prize – a $100 Visa gift card and a $100 voucher for service at White Chapel.

The community can see the tulips in bloom at White Chapel Memorial Park Cemetery from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Sunday and Holidays. People also can go to the White Chapel Memorial Park Cemetery website and sign up to receive tulip bloom alerts.

Visitors can expect to see some of the following varieties of tulips on display:

  • Giant Orange Sunset – the largest tulip in existence.
  • Renowned Unique – a new variety; a double late blooming bulb.
  • Sky High Scarlet – brand new, a tall, red, late blooming tulip.
  • Ballerina – bright orange and very fragrant.
  • Camaraque – an ivory white tulip with a red flame. It is a single late blooming bulb.

“Each year, we plant new tulip bulbs because we want to ensure we have a spectacular display of flowers,” Krall said. “We encourage the community to stop by to see and enjoy our beautiful display of tulips.”

Once tulip season ends, a stunning array of flowers will be planted in the White Chapel Memorial Park Cemetery gardens for everyone to enjoy all summer long.

White Chapel Memorial Park Cemetery will also be hosting its annual Easter Sunrise Service at 7 a.m. and at 8:30 a.m. this Sunday in the Temple of Memories.
