I earned a Bachelors’ Degree in Business Management from Oakland University with a focus on accounting and marketing while working full-time as an executive administrative assistant to the Director of Finance and the Director of Marketing at a subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum. I graduated Cum Laude which means that I held an all-A grade-point average throughout my studies.  I have Lifetime Memberships in Two National Honor Societies; I made the Dean's List for Academic Excellence and I completed a 2012 Michigan Municipal League elected officials’ legislative training course.  I am presently enrolled in online studies at Hillsdale College.

Could you tell us about your personal or professional background, relevant to this position?

I was appointed to the Oakland County Women’s Commission in 2010 and the Oakland County Women’s Advisory Board in 2011. I am a prior member of Troy Chamber of Commerce Political Action Committee where I participated in Troy High seniors’ job fair that gave insight into marketing and sales. I served Meals on Wheels lunches to home-bound senior citizens. I was the elected Mayor of Troy in 2011/2012.  I am a non-incumbent candidate running for an open seat on the council.  I have direct City of Troy legislative experience with a proven record of voting the same way I campaigned.

Do you have an activity relevant to this position or an endorsement which you would like readers to know of?

I have had opportunities to travel across Troy and Michigan building relationships with community leaders, business owners and citizens alike.  I have given presentations to groups as large as 2,500 people; always with a focus on limited, accountable government, low taxes and less regulatory laws - these are issues I am passionate about.  The best example of my ability to develop an analysis of issues, structure a presentation and then deliver that presentation with kindness, clarity and these principles is my State of the City address to the citizens of Troy in 2012.  This speech can be viewed at www.JaniceForCouncil.com

Could you summarize why you are running for city council?

I am running because of my abiding love for God, family, Troy and conservative representative self-government. Community safety and proper use of taxpayers’ money are governments’ most sacred responsibilities. I will never threaten Police protection as was done in 2010 to get a tax increase (please note it was recently revealed that the .70 mill increase was unnecessary because Troy has over $23 million in unallocated funds to finance our library with no new taxes). We need 7-day operation of our Library, which never should have been closed in the first place. I support children, education and government accountability.

What do you think are the greatest issues facing the city? How would you handle them?

My priority is to open a private sector competitive process so that taxpayers can find ways to streamline city services.  We know that money kept in the private sector offers opportunities to create new wealth whereas government services that must protect us, our children, our families and our future need to be cost effective and held to a high standard of accountability. I will advocate for a process to give families that economic information. Once our Troy families see the important data, my expectations are to cast my vote for fiscal responsibility to protect our assets and our children's future.
