Troy Holds on To Distinction as One of the Safest Cities in America for Another Year

The town has been named the 36th safest city in the United States.

For yet another year, Troy has been ranked as one of the safest cities to live in the entire United States.

According to a recent list of crime rankings in metropolitan areas by CQ Press, Troy comes in as the third safest city in Michigan and takes the 36th spot overall across America.

CQ Press uses six crime categories to determine the rankings for cities with a population of over 75,000 but less than 99,999, a category in which Troy falls into.  Based on crime data reported to the FBI by the city in 2011, the categories include murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor vehicle theft.

Despite its proximity to more dangerous areas, Troy has the second lowest crime rate ranking in Michigan, for cities with similar population sizes, and third overall, regardless of size. Notably, Troy was ranked as the safest city in Michigan for 11 of the last 16 ranking periods and has achieved “Safest City” status as high as fifth and sixth in the overall United States, in 2006 and 2005, respectively.

Incidents of violent crime reported to the Troy Police Department, which include murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, were relatively low in 2011.
