Troy Police Captain Retires, Accepts Job as Milan Chief of Police

Capt. Gerard Scherlinck has worked for the Troy Police Department for more than 26 years.

The following information was provided by the Troy Police Department.

Capt. Gerard Scherlinck announced his retirement, effective this Friday. Scherlinck recently and has worked at the department for more than 26 years. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in January of 2009.

“Captain Scherlinck was a major part of the team that guided the police department through the reorganization caused from our downsizing," Troy Police Chief Gary Mayer said. "His ability to face conflict with confidence – creativity in problem solving and leadership – will be missed. I wish him the best in his new endeavor in the City of Milan. They are fortunate to get someone of his outstanding ability.”

Scherlinck began his career at the Troy Police Department in February of 1986. As a police officer, he received numerous letters of thanks from citizens, including numerous letters of commendation for his work in fatal crash investigations and one for his help in handling a barricaded gunman situation. 

In 1989, he received a Unit Commendation for his accomplishments as a member of the Tactical Support Team. Also in 1989, he received a Unit Commendation for his efforts on the Directed Patrol Unit. He was promoted to sergeant in 1992 and promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 1995.

He has supervised the Operations Division, Support Services, Criminal Investigations, Staff Inspections, Tactical Support Team, Directed Patrol Unit, and the Community Services Section. He also served for many years as the Public Information Officer for the department.

The Troy Police Department’s philosophy is to be a community-based, problem-solving department. Scherlinck embodies that philosophy. He has shown to be a true leader by example. He has spent his career assisting with programs sponsored by the March of Dimes, American Cancer Society, the Special Olympics, Troy Jaycees, , VFW Food and Gift Drives, , , and is also a long term member of the Troy Community Coalition.

Captain Scherlinck leaves behind a legacy of dedication to the citizens of Troy, being a trusted adviser, and having a work ethic that is unmatched. The citizens of Milan should rest comfortably as they have selected one of the best.
