Cindy Stewart Honored as a Difference Maker in Troy

Stewart will be honored at the Leadership Troy 45th Annual Community Awards Banquet on Wednesday, Nov. 6.

The following information was submitted in a press release.

Cindy Stewart was named as the Troy Distinguished Citizen of 2013, an annual award given by Leadership Troy.

“The award is given each year to either an individual or couple who reside in Troy.  A selection committee comprised of a cross section of members involved in Troy made the selection,” Leadership Troy President Jim Cyrulewski said.

“The criteria they used to make the selection was that the nominee contributed to the Troy community above and beyond that which required in their employment; demonstrated character, commitment and/or leadership qualities; received no monetary or in-kind compensation for volunteer activities; actively participated in community or civic organizations, school and/ or faith community and exemplified professional accomplishments and contribution to the economic well being and quality of life in Troy.  Cindy Stewart certainly meets all the criteria.”

Stewart will be honored at the Leadership Troy 45th Annual Community Awards Banquet on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at the St. Nicholas Greek Cultural Center at 760 W. Wattles Rd. (between Livernois and Crooks). This annual event also honors the significant contributions of individuals and businesses who give back to the Troy community.

Other awards given out that night are Outstanding Volunteer Awards in which Troy community organizations honor an individual who has helped their organization thrive and Business Community Appreciation Award which recognizes a Troy business which has contributed generously to a non-profit organization or to the Troy community with their financial support, time, and energy

Community involvement background

  • Became involved with the Boys & Girls Club of Troy in 2000 as a volunteer on the Taste of Troy Committee. Recruited to the organization's Board of Directors in 2005. Served as Vice President in 2008 & 2009 and President in 2010 & 2011. Became the Chairperson for the PNC Taste of Troy event, the B&GCT largest fundraiser in 2002. Annually volunteers at the Summer Camp Program registration event, annual carnivals and various other programs. Serves on the Marketing Committee, Program & Membership Committee, Development/Endowment Planning Committee, and Executive Committee and was a member of the Youth of the Year Panel in 2011.
  • Member of the Troy Youth Assistance Board of Directors since 2009 where she manages their marketing.  Volunteers at all TYA events including annual Youth Recognition Awards Ceremony, all fundraising events, and programs.
  • Member of the Troy Community Coalition's major fundraiser (Celebrity Night Dinner) committee since 2007 and the annual Prayer Breakfast Committee since 2004.
  • Volunteer on the Charles A. Main, MD Pediatric Cancer Survivor Scholarship Fund Committee at Beaumont Hospital for the past 5 years. Cindy became involved because her son Jason was a patient of Dr. Main and is a 19-year cancer survivor.
  • Troy Police & Fire Benevolent Association Board Secretary since 2002. Compiles and maintains organizational records including annual reports, meeting agendas and minutes, correspondence, and donations data.  Organized the silent auction at the annual TPFBA Hockey Game fundraiser for five years.
  • Volunteer at Troy Historic Village events for the past 12 years. Member of the Troy Historical Society Board of Trustees since Sept. 2011. Coordinates the annual Troy Traffic Jam Classic Car Show to benefit the Troy Historical Society. Served on the Strategic Planning Committee in 2013.
  • Volunteer Probation Officer at 52-4 District Court 2009 — present.
  • Co-chair of the annual Emerald Lakes Homeowner's Association's Halloween Parade for the past four years.
  • Member of the Troy People Concerned Board of Directors since 2010. Secretary of the Board since 2011, Chairperson of the annual Pasta Dinner Committee since 2011. Assists with all TPC fundraisers and events, produces the annual report, helped revamp the TPC website, assists with the Christmas Party at Fire Station 6 for local children, and stuffs backpacks for the Back to School event. Member of the marketing/ public relations and nominating committees.
  • Volunteer for Courageous Persuaders, 2001-2005, Judge Michael Martone's program where high school students produced 30 second commercials related to problems associated with teens and alcohol, that are viewed by middle school kids and their high school peers.
  • Serves on the Troy School District Diversity & Inclusion Council, 2012 — present.
  • Multiple Sclerous (MS) volunteer at annual Walks to raise money since 2009.
