UPDATED: Photo Showing Troy Mayor, Supporter Walking with Recall Signs Goes Viral

The photo has been shared dozens of times on Facebook since it was posted Sunday night.

Editor's note: This story was updated at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5 with information from Kroger spokesperson Dale Hollandsworth.

A photo released by political action committee Recall Janice Daniels on Sunday evening showing Troy Mayor Janice Daniels walking with her supporter and fellow transit center opponent Minesh Baxi (center), followed by an unnamed Kroger employee who is carrying at least two "Vote Yes to Recall Janice Daniels" signs, went viral on social media Sunday evening.

Daniels faces a recall election on Tuesday.

The photo, posted to Recall Janice Daniels' Facebook page around 6 p.m. Sunday, had 29 shares within an hour after it was posted. The photo was taken at Kroger at the corner of Long Lake and Livernois in Troy.

"This photo, sent to us by a supporter, confirms what I've always suspected. Janice Daniels is interested in clinging to power and not listening to the voices of the people of Troy," Recall Janice Daniels co-founder John Kulesz said. "If she is willing to associate with people removing lawn signs, then she fails, at a fundamental level, to understand what makes a good leader."

Daniels did not return calls from Patch on Sunday evening inquiring about the photograph, though Baxi said they were there to help Kroger employees remove several Recall Janice Daniels signs he said were illegally placed.

"This property is a business property, and these signs, we were told, were not put up with the permission of the business," said Baxi, who added that he did not speak directly with the property owner.

Dale Hollandsworth, spokesperson for Kroger, said Monday afternoon that the property owner has "a long-standing policy that no political signs will be posted and has given all the tenants there, and Kroger in particular, the right to remove signs of that nature."

He added that "no permission (to put up signs) would ever be given at this particular shopping center.”

Political yard signs for nearly all candidates and races are being taken from properties throughout Troy – especially Recall Janice Daniels and No Troy Recall signs. Recently, a 62-year-old Troy man was questioned by police and may be charged after he was caught removing several legally-placed Recall Janice Daniels yard signs.

Complete coverage

Daniels took office in November of 2011 and first came under fire in December for her anti-gay Facebook comment. She has remained the center of controversy after voting against the Troy Transit Center (a scaled-down version was later approved), telling the Troy High School Gay-Straight Alliance she would bring in an expert to tell them  comparing the dangers of homosexuality to the dangers of smoking cigarettes on a radio show, writing a lengthy position paper some viewed as personally attacking city employees and council members, and engaging in an argument with 2012 Troy Distinguished Citizen Mary Kerwin over the origin of her award while while presenting Kerwin with a proclamation during an October Troy City Council meeting.

It’s true, Janice Daniels is not a seasoned politician. That’s why she is an easy target. But she is a person of integrity and stands by the promises she ran her campaign on, even though following those promises cost her this recall in part ( the refusal of the wasteful transit center). She is NOT a fundamentally flawed leader as you try to portray her – she is just fundamentally different from the people who are trying to recall her. She is just on a side of people of Troy and not big government when it comes to spending and taxes. And you can’t recall a person for that. By the way, see the Detroit News view on the ballot, urging to vote NO Troy Recall - http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20121029/OPINION01/210290318#ixzz2AjCdB6DI

Ann, I'm sorry, but I've been unable to find my original source for the information on the election results. As "CC" and "Cathy" mention, I did find that Daniels received about 7700 votes, and that there are about 62,000 adults living in Troy, so she was elected by 12% (a clear minority) of adults in Troy. I could not find out how many of the adults were actually registered voters. If you can provide me a source that shows I'm wrong in the statement I made, I will apologize for my mistake. In fact, I do apologize for making such a statement without also citing my (credible) source for the numbers. I was going by memory. I'm eager for any sources to which you might point me that prove me wrong, because I don't want to be guilty of spreading misinformation.

Troy Patch needs to do a little investigative journalism here and interview the Kroger employee in the picture and possibly other Kroger staff. Then, report what really happened to hopefully quiet all this arm-chair speculation of what went on that day.
GambitofTroy November 05, 2012 at 05:24 PM
She is an easy target be cause she lacks common sense. On another note...I wonder if she had them remove the other illegally placed sings as well? or just the ones she didn't like.
GambitofTroy November 05, 2012 at 05:28 PM
It's kind of like the town drunk getting caught sneaking out of somebody's garage with a case of beer under his arm and saying "I'm just disposing of this because it's beyond the freshness date"
Jen Anesi (Editor) November 05, 2012 at 05:43 PM
K. Niner, I did call the Kroger store and spoke with a supervisor last night, but they have a VERY strict "no comment" policy when it comes to the media, so I got no information from them. I called their corporate communications office first thing this morning (twice) and am still awaiting a return call. I will update the story with any additional information I get. Thank you for your feedback!

"She is just on a side of people of Troy..." You have got to be kidding...she's only on the side of a specific type of people in Troy...if you are gay, black, jewish, asian or muslim; you are not considered on her "side of people". Just look at the people she does side with and that's enough reason to recall her.
Daffy Noodnicks November 05, 2012 at 06:32 PM
She's an easy target because she has been so profoundly and consistently awful. She has brought this recall on herself. What exactly has she done to reduce the size of government or taxes? Nothing. Your ideological sound bites are meaningless and have nothing to do the issue at hand.
Troy November 05, 2012 at 06:49 PM
Thankfully her lack of ethics and ignorance is combine with a lack of intelligence! She would be scary otherwise.
Conservative Dem November 05, 2012 at 07:00 PM
Uh, because Mr. Mineh Baxi is in the photo? Is there something else he is known for that would make him relevant to Troy residents?
Wiley Coyote November 05, 2012 at 07:21 PM
Daniels, the worst mayor in the history of Troy has a rare ability to prove her detractors right almost every day. L. Brooks Patterson knew what he was talking about when he referred to Janice, Glenn Clark and Bob Gosselin as the "Taliban of Oakland County." Recall Janice Daniels and stop her madness, for once and for all.
Sharon November 05, 2012 at 07:29 PM
She's been around for a while. Janice Daniels led the charge to vote against funding our public library 3 times!
Rick from Troy November 05, 2012 at 08:02 PM
The scary thing is not Janice Daniels. Persons of her incompetence and arrogance inevitably get exposed. No, the scary thing is all the hate speak from the radical fringes. And what can happen when too few of us take our voting responsibilities seriously in the first place.
Dale Murrish November 05, 2012 at 10:32 PM
So, the truth comes out eventually. Much ado about nothing.. The voters will decide this tomorrow.
Wiley Coyote November 05, 2012 at 10:40 PM
Really Dale? How do you figure it's about nothing? A paranoid mayor running around town desperately trying to neutralize lawn signs in the hopes no one will see them and forget that her first year in office has been an unmitigated disaster...oh yeah, I guess you're right. Vote Yes to recall Janice Daniels.
Rick from Troy November 06, 2012 at 12:35 AM
Ding dong, the witch is dead politically. I can't' wait till tomorrow!
Anonymous November 06, 2012 at 01:14 AM
Totally agree with the comments by Sana and Dale. The Patch has been one sided since the whole Janice Daniels recall. It truly is a liberal media source. The majority of the posts are from those types of people and I know they dislike when they are called that. My life is too busy to pay attention to what's happening to political signs which look trashy in our city anyways. Let's hope Obama is out and Janice stays in!
Linda November 06, 2012 at 01:20 AM
You obviously don't read all the comments. The recall group is full of Republicans, Independents and Democrats. They are all concerned Troy citizens that care about their city and the damage being done to its stellar reputation. You should read today's Letter to the Editor - We Are All Tired of the Games Being Played - for more about how the supporters of Janice operate. By the way, I am a Republican.
Lori Wingard November 06, 2012 at 01:25 AM
Mayor Daniels needs to go. She's an argumentative, loose cannon whose views do not reflect those of the Troy citizens. Hate speech? She's really good at it. As for people from out of town chiming in? Take your Tea Party nonsense and go away. This is none of your business.
Alison McNaughton November 06, 2012 at 01:35 AM
Ann, From your comments, I am going assume you are related to Janice Daniels..You sound exactle like her.. The woman is rude, not willing to take responsibility for her actions and seems a tad crazy to me...Troy is a wonderful city. I have lived here for 22 years. This woman needs to be removed.
firelight November 06, 2012 at 01:47 AM
People from both "sides" shop at Kroger. I have been shopping there for 22 years. Kroger execs have a policy against being used on any political "side." That is an ethical policy. Whoever placed those signs so close to Kroger should be held accountable. Both "sides" should be able to shop at Kroger without poitical intimidation of any kind.
firelight November 06, 2012 at 01:52 AM
Shame on Patch for sensationalizing this issue, and shame on the YES side for their continued and unrelenting personal attacks on others. It is they who are giving Troy such a bad name. It is they who have torn this city apart, baiting neighbor to go against neighbor. Shame, shame and more shame. Yes, I am so ashamed of you!
Wiley Coyote November 06, 2012 at 02:04 AM
The Recall movement didn't denigrate gay people on Facebook. They didn't discourage investment in Troy with "no" votes for a major infrastructure project in our city. They didn't insult and demean young people trying to stop bullying. They didn't invite crazed bigots from out of town to speak as experts on Troy civic matters. They didn't nominate and push through a city official who made a bigoted remark against Chinese people on camera in a city council meeting. They didn't spend 20 minutes of city time slamming a respected city official over opening her mail. They didn't intentionally ruin a great moment for one of our city's best volunteers just to score a political point. The Recall Movement did none of those things. Janice Daniels did them all, without apology. The shame is hers.
firelight November 06, 2012 at 02:08 PM
Last time I checked, this is America and America was a democracy. Under our system of laws, an elected official may vote any way they want to. We do not iive under a dictatorship. Moreover, elected officials are expected to vote the way they promised to vote in their campaign for election. Again, we do not live under a dictatorship. Yes, there have been missteps. The appropriate way to address your discontent would have been in the next election. However since you felt so strongly, you had a right to attempt a recall under our current laws. It is the manner in which you all have behaved from the minute she was elected that is at fault. The personal attacks against her and others have been way out of line. You have managed to smear all of Troy with your vicious personal tactics. Our Founding Fathers expected evey-day citizens to serve. They didn't anticipate that only polished, well-connected career politicians would be able to serve in the government. Your intolerance for any mistake puts the final nail in the coffin of expectations that ordinary citizens can survive in public office. It's a blow to democracy.
Daffy Noodnicks November 06, 2012 at 02:42 PM
I didn't even know she existed until the election or much about her until well after she was mayor. If it wasn't for her outrageous behavior, I probably still would know much about her. An enormous number of Troy voters thought she has been sufficiently bad that a recall is appropriate, which is a democratic right under our democratic state constitution. Even if you don't like it. This is not a blow for ordinary citizens serving, this is holding public officials accountable for bad behavior. Holding an elected representative responsible for their actions is NOT a personal attack.
Glenn November 06, 2012 at 02:43 PM
Actually Mary Ann, I mean firelight, the appropriate way to deal with Janice Daniels is exactly the way it was dealt with. Recall. It's the option for getting rid of elected officials when the citizens don't like the way they are doing things. It's constitutional and legal. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's not appropriate. By the way, Daniels would disagree with you about America being a democracy. She would be very quick to tell you it's a republic, not a democracy. You might want to try and understand the political philosophies of those you choose to represent you a little more closely.
John David November 06, 2012 at 04:50 PM
firelight, Janice says we are a republic. All her true followers believe this and that America is not a democracy and should not be one. Go to her website, click on the link to the no recall website, then find the link to S.H.I.E.L.D. That linked website says that recalls are a slippery slope that will "morph" America frm a republic to a democracy. If you believe as you state that America is a democracy, read those websites closely and you should realize you are mistaken about Daniels and what she is all about.
John David November 06, 2012 at 04:57 PM
Carol, This link provides the past election results in Troy. Schilling did receive more votes in 2007 than Daniels did in 2011. So you are right. http://troymi.gov/Election/PastElectionResults/
JimOfTroy November 06, 2012 at 08:10 PM
By Firelight's reasoning, if Mayberry RFD had elected Otis (the town drunk) as mayor, they would just have to wait 4 years to do anything about it. I support ordinary citizens serving their community in an elected position. But 'extra-ordinary' citizens like Janice need to be set aside more quickly before even more serious damage is done. True, we don't want to Recall people just because we disagree with them. We do, however, want to broom utter incompetence as quickly as possible.
Kit Kat November 07, 2012 at 05:07 PM
Ding Dong, the witch is dead! Janice Daniels, please get on your broom and fly away....don't let the door hit you on the butt on the way out. P.S. please take that crazy Ann Galen with you (oh oh, just fed the troll!)...
