Troy Mayor Recall Effort 'Slightly Ahead of Schedule'

With a month left to go, the group has 70 percent of the 7,985 signatures needed to trigger a recall election.

While many residents' attention has turned to and the in recent weeks, the effort to recall embattled Troy Mayor Janice Daniels has continued to push forward in the background.

And on Wednesday, with a month left to go before the June 15 deadline, Recall Janice Daniels founder Matt Binkowski said the group now has more than two-thirds of the required 7,985 valid signatures needed to trigger a recall election in November.

"Seventy percent of the signatures, we've validated," Binkowski said. "We've had to throw out 3-4 percent, but we're doing all right. We think we'll make it. In fact, we're slightly ahead of schedule."

Binkowski said the core group of more than 50 volunteers has shifted its focus slightly away from public areas like the and in recent weeks, opting instead to canvass neighborhoods and go door to door looking for signatures.

"The response is still really good," Binkowski said, adding that roughly two out of three people who answer the door end up signing the recall petition.

"I'm impressed by our volunteers," he said. "It's nice that a lot of people are supporting us."

Binkowski said the group is planning to hold another drive-by rally along Big Beaver Road this weekend in hopes that they will lure in passing motorists who have not yet signed the petition.

"We just keep on going with it," he said.
