VIDEO: 'Memorial Day is the Day We Pause to Give Thanks'

Residents, council members and veterans honor the fallen in a somber ceremony at Troy City Hall.

Dozens of attendees braved fierce sunshine and 90-degree heat late Monday morning to attend the , which honored the nation's fallen troops.

During the ceremony, keynote speaker and Troy resident retired Army Brig. Gen. Donald Schenk delivered a heartfelt speech calling on residents to never forget the fallen – and those who survive them.

"Memorial Day is the day we pause to give thanks to the people who died," Schenk said. "On this Memorial Day, we honor the generations of Americans who have fought and died to defend our freedom."
