Leonard Elementary Students Help Keep Homeless Veterans Warm

The Leonard Elementary School Student Council recently held a winter gear drive for homeless veterans in southeast Michigan.

Over the past few days, the Leonard Elementary School Student Council proudly led efforts at the school to collect winter gear for homeless veterans in southeastern Michigan.

Between Dec. 10 and 17, the Leonard community donated 30 winter coats, 95 pairs of socks, 77 pairs of gloves and 37 hats. These will be distributed to homeless veterans through the Motor City Chapter of the Women Marines Association.

The drive was sponsored by third-grade teacher Genia Connell and fourth-grade teacher Amy Wallace and was run by Leonard students in third through fifth grade.

"The kids made posters and gave morning announcements, visited classrooms to tell them about the drive," Connell wrote in an email to Troy Patch. "This was their first big community service project."
