Troy School District Closed Friday Due to Inclement Weather

Wind chills are expected to be between -15 and -25 degrees Friday.

The Troy School District will be closed Friday due to inclement weather, including freezing temperatures.

Southeast Michigan is under a wind chill advisory through Friday afternoon, with real-feel temperatures plunging to -15 to -25 degrees, the National Weather Service in Detroit says.

"These dangerous conditions make it unsafe for students to wait at bus stops or walk to school,as well as making it very difficult for buses to start in the morning," wrote the Troy School District on its Facebook Page.

As of Thursday night, clickondetroit.com announced over 250 school closings in the Metro Detroit area.

When queried on Troy's Facebook Page Thursday afternoon, some readers appeared to be in favor of canceling school:

  • "They should cancel every time the temp drops to zero or below...especially for those kids that have to walk!"
  • "I would say if the wind chill avg is -20 or more = no school. but lets look at facts. Frost bite risk starts at -20 and 30 mins outside and our walkers are not going to be out that long."
  • "Then there are children that have to walk to their bus stops then wait for how long for their bus to come. There are probably more kids that take buses than walk to school."
How will your children spend their long weekend? Are you against canceling school due to cold? Tell us in the comments.
