For college football fans, it is indeed the most wonderful time of the year. Bowl season is upon us—35 games featuring top teams playing high-stakes football.

At least 116 players from the Metro Detroit area are on the rosters of 21 teams from all over the country which qualified for bowl games.

High school football fans in the area are sure to remember some of the stars of local teams who have graduated to the next level. Unsurprisingly, Michigan and Michigan State universities feature a surplus of local talent.

Michigan State were led to their first outright Big Ten Championship and first Rose Bowl berth since the 1987 season by local products. Bennie Fowler (Detroit Country Day), Tyler Hoover (Novi), Taiwan Jones (Anchor Bay), and at least 25 other Metro Detroit natives are part of a season which will be remembered fondly for generations of Michigan State fans to come. The No. 4 Spartans travel to Pasadena to play Stanford on Jan. 1 (5 p.m., ESPN).

Meanwhile, Wolverines fans have cheered on locals including James Ross III (Orchard Lake St. Mary's), Brennan Beyer (Plymouth), Mario Ojemudia (Farmington Hills Harrison), and at least 35 more Metro Detroit natives this season. On Dec. 28, Michigan plays Kansas State in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl (10:15 p.m., ESPN).
