DSO Plays 'Go Get 'Em Tigers!'

The orchestrated version of the song was scored in-house by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's librarians.

The following information was submitted by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra

In honor of the Tigers' success against the New York Yankees, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) finished each of its three concerts last weekend with an orchestrated version of the vintage fight song, "Go Get 'Em Tigers."

Scored in-house by DSO librarians, "Go Get 'Em Tigers" was the theme song of Detroit's 1968 championship team, and in 2006, after the Tigers beat the Yankees in the American League Division Series, it was played as players carried manager Jim Leyland off the field.

"Go Get 'Em Tigers" Lyrics:

We're all behind our baseball team
Go get 'em Tigers
World Series bound and picking up steam
Go get 'em Tigers
There'll be joy in Tiger Town the whole night long
when the Bengals bring the pennant home to where it belongs
We're all behind our baseball team
Go get 'em
Detroit Tigers!
Go get 'em Tigers!!

I love the Tigers, the DSO and the sentiment, but this is a really lame performance. This poor woman does not know the melody. Is this Mr. Slatkin's revenge for all those years directing the symphony in St Louis?

What do you mean, Musicman495, that she does not know the melody? She is singing the lyrics as they were written. The Patch article does not have the accurate lyrics. I just listened to the original recording. The fifth line should be "There'll be joy in Tiger Town, we'll sing you songs." The next line should not have "to" before "where." See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fMqnFQRiUs. Where the DSO does not get it correct is that there is a musical bridge after what the vocalist sings and then a reprise of the last four lines.

Good news for Troy. And hopefully they'll be hiring some new workers, too.
