Remembering the Lads and Lassies who Serve in Afghanistan

Local Scottish society ships 72 care packages to Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan.

Members of the St. Andrew’s Society of Detroit recently mailed 72 care packages of personal products and other requested items to U.S. Marines at Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan. The contents of the boxes were donated by members of the society, who packed the boxes last Monday at the Kilgour Scottish Centre in Troy.

Volunteers mailed the boxes Friday morning at the Greenmead Station of the Livonia Post Office, where postal employees arrived two hours early just to accommodate the special annual mailing. As postal employees processed the huge shipment, Detroit St. Andrew’s Pipe Band Pipe Sergeant Don Ross piped the packages off to Camp Leatherneck.

Post office employees weighed each package, and at an average of 10 ½ pounds each, the Society estimates that Friday’s shipment weighed more than a third of a ton total. It was the seventh year the St. Andrew’s Society of Detroit has organized this special acknowledgement for troops deployed abroad.

The donations included the "little things from home" that the men and women often don't have access to in combat. Also included were notes from children and personal notes from Society members indicating just how much St. Andrew’s members appreciate these service men and women. Members also donated money to mail each box.

The St. Andrew’s Society of Detroit is Michigan’s oldest, non-religious, benevolent organization celebrating Scottish culture and history in America through education and charity. Monthly meetings are held at its Kilgour Scottish Centre in Troy; call 248-526-1849 for more information.
