<p>The Troy Police Department was formed in 1952 with the hiring of Chief David Gratopp and a single officer patrolling what was then Troy Township.</p>
<p>Troy police Lt. Robert Redmond, public information officer for the department, said in the Spring of 2011 that the Troy Police Department maintains about 135 sworn officers with plans to reduce staffing in future years.</p> <p>The department operates several divisions and units, dedicated to crime prevention, enforcement, criminal investigations, training and maintaining professional standards. The department also maintains a 24-hour lockup/holding facility within its headquarters.</p> <p>The Troy Police Department emphasizes a community policing philosophy that works with segments of the community to resolve issues and implement services. The department operates about 50 community policing programs, one of the most extensive rosters in Michigan.</p>
