Classic Musical Graces the Baldwin’s Stage

Stagecrafters presents “The Sound of Music.”

Stagecrafters doesn’t repeat their productions very often with the exception of the classics such as The Sound of Music. Although Stagecrafters has mounted this beloved musical twice prior in their 56-year-history (1981, 1992), this latest production will have audiences marveling at the incredible set, period costumes, choral voices and the use of the Baldwin Theatre’s Wurlitzer Pipe Organ.  The show is the creation of Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein II, Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, and is based on "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers" by Maria Augusta Trapp. Popular with audiences around the world, the show runs May 31 – June 23, 2013, at the Baldwin Theatre, 415 S. Troy Police Department Open House Shows Off K-9 Unit and More

The event on Saturday capped off events scheduled as part of National Police Week.

Under sunny skies on Saturday, the Troy Police Department showed dozens of families from in and around Troy how they keep us safe every day. With the backing of the Troy High School Jazz Ensemble, smiles were all around as police fans toured ambulances, all-purpose vehicles, tactical support vehicles, a communication support truck, and a car smashed by a drunk driver. K-9 officers showed off what they could do, too, going as far as to search for synthetic drugs which had been planted in the smashed car. In addition to the open house, Troy Police have been reaching out to the community in other ways this week:

Warthog Piglets Daphne and Violet Blossom at Detroit Zoo

The piglets are "very cute," according to the curator of mammals.

Flowers aren’t the only things blooming at the Detroit Zoo. Daphne and Violet – female warthogs born April 7, 2013 – are now firmly planted in their African Grasslands habitat near the Africa Train Station.  The birth is the result of a breeding recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan, a cooperative management program to ensure genetically healthy, diverse and self-sustaining populations of threatened and endangered species. There are currently just over a hundred warthogs in North American zoos.  “We’re excited to have these baby warthogs and to help this small population in zoos grow,” said Robert Lessnau, Detroit Zoological Society Curator of Mammals. “The piglets are very cute and we’re happy to …

Dog for Adoption 'Chippy' is Full of Personality

Meet Chippy, our Pet of the Week. Chippy is an approximately 3-year-old male Staffordshire Bull Terrier who is currently available for adoption with Almost Home Animal Rescue League in Southfield. He is described as being "extremely smart," knows basic commands and walks like a perfect gentlemen on a leash. He "loves giving kisses and is just so full of silly personality," his adoption profile states. Chippy would do best in a home with a tall fenced yard and with no other animals. The following information about police incidents is taken directly from the most recent Troy Police Department media release.  2000 block of Dashwood, 10 p.m. on May 14 and 6 a.m. on May 15: The complainant’s Chevrolet Blazer was stolen while parked in the driveway of her home.  2000 block of Dina, Feb. 1: The IRS notified the complainant that someone filed a fraudulent tax return using the complainant’s social security number.
