Troy Police Department Open House Shows Off K-9 Unit and More

The event on Saturday capped off events scheduled as part of National Police Week.

Under sunny skies on Saturday, the Troy Police Department showed dozens of families from in and around Troy how they keep us safe every day. With the backing of the Troy High School Jazz Ensemble, smiles were all around as police fans toured ambulances, all-purpose vehicles, tactical support vehicles, a communication support truck, and a car smashed by a drunk driver. K-9 officers showed off what they could do, too, going as far as to search for synthetic drugs which had been planted in the smashed car. In addition to the open house, Troy Police have been reaching out to the community in other ways this week:

Troy Hosts Police Memorial Service, Honors Ceremony

'This is probably the highest honor I could have as Mayor is to be here today,' said Mayor Dane Slater.

Troy Police officers and law enforcement individuals nationwide who have lost their lives serving the public were honored Thursday morning at the city's annual police memorial service. The Troy Police Honor Guard performed "Taps" and dignitaries placed memorial wreaths along the pathway east of the station in honor of those local police who died in the line of duty. Troy Mayor Dane Slater, a retired Police Captain originally hired in 1974, put the notes aside and spoke from the heart: "This is probably the highest honor I could have as Mayor is to be here today, to recognize our great police department and those who gave their lives on behalf of our city," he said. Cadillac Escalade Stolen, Retail Fraud, and Robbery in Troy

The following information about police incidents is taken directly from the most recent Troy Police Department media release. 500 block of Burtman, between 6 and 11:52 p.m. on May 11: The complainant reports his Cadillac Escalade was stolen while parked on the street. An Apple iPad, assorted power tools and some clothing were in the vehicle when it was stolen. A Troy Officer was writing the police report documenting the incident when he learned the vehicle had already been recovered, abandoned, in Detroit. The ignition had been punched. Nordstrom (2850 W. The following information about recent incidents of drunken driving and driving under the influence is taken directly from the most recent Troy Police Department media release. Note: In Michigan, the blood alcohol content legal limit is .08 percent. E. South Blvd. and Dequindre Rd. at 6:20 a.m. on May 11: A Troy Officer was dispatched to the area after a citizen reported a suspected drunk driver. The officer located the suspect vehicle and confirmed it was driving erratically, including on the shoulder of the roadway. No Injuries Reported in Troy Apartment Fire

A Sunday afternoon fire at Charter Square Apartments was contained to one room and did not spread to other apartments.

An apartment fire at Charter Square Apartments in Troy did not cause injuries to residents or firefighters, according to a Troy Fire Department release issued Monday. At 4:07 p.m. Sunday, Fire Stations 1 and 4, along with Air Tender 3 were sent to the scene at 2815 Charter Blvd. following a neighbor's report of smoke coming out of a window. The people who live in the apartment safely left prior to the fire department's arrival. Thanks to quick work by the firefighters on scene, the fire was contained to one room of the apartment and no other apartments were affected by the fire. The occupants of the involved apartment are staying at an undisclosed hotel. The cause of the fire has not been released and remains under investigation.

Oakland County and Detroit Public Safety Agencies Link Up

Radio system will allow the agencies to communicate directly with each other and coordinate responses to cross-border emergencies.

Officials are hoping to boost safety for Oakland County and Detroit residents with an addition to the county's OakWIN interoperable radio system. The system will now use data from Detroit to make a communication link between all Oakland County and Detroit police, fire and EMS radios, according to a recent Oakland County press release. Using OakWIN, the public safety agencies will be able to communicate directly with each other and coordinate responses to cross-border emergencies. OakWIN is supported by the regional public safety data-sharing consortium CLEMIS - the Courts Law Enforcement Management Information System. “This is a boost to the safety of Oakland County and Detroit residents,” Oakland County Executive L. Man Impersonates Security Dealer at Troy Woman's Home

The following information about recent incidents is taken directly from the most recent Troy Police Department media release. 100 block of Starr, May 5: A woman reports that a man came to her door and represented himself as an employee of a well-known security company. He was wearing a blue golf shirt with the company logo. He asked her numerous security questions and had her initial a form. At no time did he attempt to gain entry into the home. Two days later, the complainant called the security company and they informed her that they do not conduct surveys.
