Signing Day: Student-Athletes in Troy Make it Official

Senior classes of student-athletes from Troy High and Athens High officially decided where to play after graduation.

Twelve seniors at Troy High and Athens High joined student-athletes from across the country Wednesday in formally signing their letters of intent to compete at respective colleges, universities, and service academies next fall. Tigers Visit Troy, Assist American Red Cross

The Detroit Tigers Winter Caravan stopped Thursday at Hockeytown Authentics in Troy.

The Detroit Tigers Winter Caravan stopped Thursday at Hockeytown Authentics in Troy to meet fans and help the American Red Cross. For a donation of hats, gloves or other items, fans had the opportunity to take a photo with pitcher Max Scherzer and centerfielder Austin Jackson. "We thank you for allowing us to help those affected by disaster," said La Forice Nealy, regional executive officer for the American Red Cross. "These gifts were given here to be used here."

It's definitely not baseball weather out there, but Tigers fans still can see some of their favorite players today in Troy. The players will be touring today and Friday throughout Metro Detroit as part of the Detroit Tigers Winter Caravan. The Tigers will be at Troy's Hockeytown Authentics (1845 E. Big Beaver Road) from 5:15 p.m. to 6 p.m. Fans will have the opportunity to take a photo with two Tigers players, whose names have yet to be announced. There also will be a collection to benefit fire victims through the American Red Cross. Team members will make several other stops throughout Metro Detroit that are open to the public, including the following:

Red Wings Open Camp in Plymouth, Offer Free Admission to Red vs. White Game

Red Wings' warmups open to public at Compuware Arena in Plymouth.

While its home venue, Joe Louis Arena, is booked for the North American International Auto Show, the Detroit Red Wings are offering fans a chance to see the team prepare for its lockout-shortened 2013 NHL season in Plymouth. The Red Wings opened training camp Sunday before about 2,000 fans at Compuware Arena, 14900 Beck Road, in Plymouth, according to the Detroit Free Press, and began a second session at noon on Monday. The team returns to Plymouth at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, and will hold its Red vs. White game later that evening, beginning at 6 p.m. The Red vs. White contest also will be carried live by both Fox Sports Detroit, with Ken Daniels, Mickey Redmond and Larry Murphy calling the shots, and on 1270 AM with Ken Kal and Paul Woods. Troy Sting Hockey Players Get Cool Treat

Famed NHL announcer Mike "Doc" Emrick called the play-by-play action of a game between the St. Clair Shores Saintes and Troy Sting for a taped segment for NBC's Rock Center.

The hockey players on the St. Clair Shores Saintes and Troy Sting 12U Girls teams received a cool treat this week. The two teams played last month in Troy as famed NHL play-by-play announcer Mike “Doc” Emrick called the game for a taped segment which aired Thursday night on NBC’s Rock Center. Emrick calls hockey games for NBC Sports, though he has little action this year with the NHL lockout. Kim Clexton, a Grosse Pointe Park resident and parent of one of the players on the St. Clair Shores Saintes, said cameras taped action all over the rink and in the stands. The NHL and Players' Union reportedly have reached an agreement to end the lockout. While there is an agreement to return to work, will you return to watch the NHL?

Labor peace may finally be returning to the NHL after the league and players reportedly reached an agreement to end the 113-day lockout, the Huffpost Detroit reported. The league will reportedly try to schedule a 48-game season. When hockey returns, will you watch? Share your opinion in our poll?

The Michigan High School Athletic Association is hosting its second annual Battle of the Fans.

There's no doubt that high school students know how to support their sports teams. But, does Troy have the best fan section around?  Now you've got a chance to prove it. The Michigan High School Athletic Association is hosting its second annual Battle of the Fans and is ready to highlight the best student cheering sections across Michigan. To enter, follow these rules: The MHSAA Student Advisory Council will choose five finalists. MHSAA officials will visit each school on a Friday game night to see the fan section in person. The winner will be announced on Feb. 22 and will be invited to the Class B Boys Basketball Semifinals at the Breslin Center on March 22 to be recognized and receive a championship banner. Here's where to find all of the collegiate bowl games leading up to the Jan. 7 BCS Championship.

It's the most wonderful time of the year for college football fans: Bowl season! The 2012 Division I Football Bowl Subdivision bowl game schedule has been underway since Dec. 15, when Arizona edged Nevada in the New Mexico Bowl and Utah State routed Toledo in the Potato Bowl. Thirty-three games remain on tap through the Jan. 7 National Championship between Notre Dame and Alabama. The gridiron action resumes tonight, however, when San Diego State faces Brigham Young University at 8 p.m. on ESPN.  Michigan schools are well-represented in this year's bowl game schedule, too.
