Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan invites you to participate in the 18th annual Hunger-Free Summer Food Fight to Tackle Childhood Hunger from July 16-27. The Food Fight is a contest to collect food and dollars to help feed hungry children. Area businesses, organizations and individuals are encouraged to donate to this food-drive program that benefits Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan. Donations will benefit the Gleaners Community Food Bank.
A Southfield-based real estate group wil host a "Christmas in January" food drive Thursday in Troy to benefit Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan. From 8 a.m.-3 p.m., representatives of the Farbman Group will be at Sheffield Office Park to collect nonperishable items. Recommended donations are peanut butter and canned tuna, salmon, chicken, ham, stew, chili, beef ravioli and beans. There is also a need for healthful snacks for children, such as granola bars, pretzels, juice boxes and fruit cups. The Christmas in January theme "is aimed at raising awareness for community outreach all year long," a press release from the organization says. This will be the third year for the food drive. The canned food will be given to Troy families in need this season.
It was a rush to the finish line this morning as students from the Troy Athens High School student congress scrambled to meet their goal of 5,000 cans of food for their annual food drive. Rachel Rockensuess, a senior at Athens, said as of this morning the group was about 40 cans short of their 5,000-can goal. The teens sought last-minute donations from fellow students and by the end of lunch hour had raised more than $60, $50 of which was in change. Two Kroger trips later and the group had 5,130 cans to donate. "I think it's really great," Rockensuess said Friday afternoon as she and several other students helped move the canned food and water bottles from a packed gym locker room to a police trailer, which came to pick up the items. Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan tackles childhood hunger with food drive through July 29.
You can make a difference for a hungry child this summer by contributing to the Food Fight to Tackle Childhood Hunger. Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan's 17th annual food fight starts Monday and runs through July 29. Gleaners, which distributes more than 25 million pounds of food annually, said the annual food fight serves as a contest between businesses to collect food and dollars to help feed hungry children. Winners in each categorty are honored at a special luncheon and receive the traveling Madeline Kafoury Memorial Trophy to display for one year.
