The following information and photos were contributed by Jean MacLeod/Tony Gee/THS Orchestra The 2nd Annual Troy High School 5K & Fun Run was another runaway success story for the THS Orchestra. Between the runners, parent and student volunteers and race supporters, nearly 300 people congregated at Boulan Park on Oct. 7 for the start of the event. The lively pre-race entertainment was provided by the THS Country Fiddlers, while a student duet jammed with electric guitar and violin at the finish line! The 5K raised funds for Troy High School's award-winning Orchestra program, and will help defray costs associated with the Orchestra's extraordinary 'no-audition invitation' to play at Lincoln Center in NYC in April. Do you have photos of the…

Students and staff run to raise money for the school Friday in Martell Elementary's biggest fundraiser of the year.
For the seventh year in a row, students at Martell Elementary School traded their pencils for running shoes Friday during the school's annual Fun Run – Martell's biggest fundraiser of the year. "We're hoping to go over $20,000 this year," Martell Principal Charles Lesser said. The money will be used for smart boards, other classroom technology, field trips, classroom supplies and more, he said. "The fun run is 100 percent involvement," Lesser added. "Everyone participates. ... It's fun seeing everyone coming together like this." Starting at 8:30 a.m. Friday and ending just after 2 p.m., the Fun Run fundraiser gave each class at Martell the opportunity to run for about half an hour. Students usually raise an average of $50 each through the …

In the wake of West Bloomfield Police officer Patrick O'Rourke's tragic death, a memorial trust fund has been created for the decorated officer's family. And to help jump start the trust fund, Emergency Restoration owner John David said his company, which is sponsoring this year's Troy Family Daze fireworks display on Saturday, is going to be working all weekend to raise $10,000 for O'Rourke's family. "We have two booths at Troy Family Daze, and we're going to be sponsoring the West Bloomfield Police Officer," David said. "We need help. I need people to stop by our booth, and I’m having the company donate t-shirts with his name on the front and pictures on the back.” O'Rourke, 39, of Fenton, was killed Sunday night in the line of duty by a…

The presidential candidate is in town for a private event hosted by Gov. Rick Snyder on Wednesday night.
A crowd of about 200 people gathered Wednesday afternoon outside the Troy Marriott hotel on Big Beaver Road to rally in protest of visiting Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Romney is in Troy for a private fundraiser hosted by Gov. Rick Snyder at the hotel. Protesters carried signs and waved at motorists along Big Beaver, many of whom were honking as they passed by. "We're here to support Barack Obama," said Jeff Klayo of Mt. Clemens, who attended the rally with two fellow UAW members. "He stands for the little guys... The working class." Liz Ratzloff of Ann Arbor attended the rally and wore the official "Pillamina" mascot costume for Planned Parenthood. "I'm here sporting Pillamina because Romney doesn't support low-cost …

More than 200 turn out for the Troy Nature Society's Wine-Tasting Fundraiser at Leon and Lulu in Clawson.
Government and community support for the Troy Nature Society was evident Thursday as more than 200 people purchased tickets to attend the first annual wine tasting fundraiser event to benefit the non-profit organization. "So far so good," Troy City Councilman Martin Howrylak said of the Nature Society's progress while attending the event at Leon and Lulu in Clawson. "It's a lot of work to get the base level of funding and volunteer work going, but once they get that going I think it will be unstoppable." The Nature Society partnered with the city earlier this year to take over operations at the Lloyd A. Stage Nature Center and its connected sanctuary. The city had shuttered the doors of the building, as well as programs at the center…
