Troy High's Jazz Artist in Residence Wins Prestigious Kresge Fellowship

Kris Johnson, of Royal Oak, is one of 25 to receive the fellowship, which includes a $25,000 cash award.

The following information was submitted by Merri Lee Jones. The Troy High School Band Boosters are pleased to announce that the Bands’ Jazz Artist-in-Residence, Kris Johnson, is a 2012 Kresge Fellowship winner.  Johnson, a trumpeter, composer, arranger and Royal Oak native, has been working with Jazz Bands students for the last three years as an in-class instructor and conductor. The Jazz Ensemble debuted Johnson’s jazz and orchestra piece, Odd Expression, in 2009. Johnson is one of 24 Detroit-area literary and performing artists chosen by the Kresge Foundation in recognition of his “creative vision and commitment to excellence.” According to its website, the fellowships promote “(t)he Kresge Foundation’s desire to advance the artistic …
