Troy Hosts Police Memorial Service, Honors Ceremony

'This is probably the highest honor I could have as Mayor is to be here today,' said Mayor Dane Slater.

Troy Police officers and law enforcement individuals nationwide who have lost their lives serving the public were honored Thursday morning at the city's annual police memorial service. The Troy Police Honor Guard performed "Taps" and dignitaries placed memorial wreaths along the pathway east of the station in honor of those local police who died in the line of duty. Troy Mayor Dane Slater, a retired Police Captain originally hired in 1974, put the notes aside and spoke from the heart: "This is probably the highest honor I could have as Mayor is to be here today, to recognize our great police department and those who gave their lives on behalf of our city," he said. VIDEO: 92-Year-Old Marine Honored on Memorial Day

Rochester Hills resident Leon Gorsline is inducted into the Cpl. Stanley L. Moore Detachment of the Marine Corps League Monday afternoon.

Nearly 70 years after serving as a Marine sergeant during the Guadalcanal Campaign, 92-year-old Leon Gorsline, while proudly wearing his favorite Marine Corps baseball cap, was inducted into the Berkley-based Cpl. Stanley L. Moore Detachment of the Marine Corps League on Monday afternoon. The brief ceremony at the Rochester Hills MediLodge, where Gorsline resides, immediately followed the City of Troy Memorial Day Ceremony, during which several members of the League had just performed Honor Guard duties. The League waived the normal membership dues for Gorsline, who received a Purple Heart after he was shot in Peliliu. Residents, council members and veterans honor the fallen in a somber ceremony at Troy City Hall.

Dozens of attendees braved fierce sunshine and 90-degree heat late Monday morning to attend the City of Troy's Memorial Day Ceremony, which honored the nation's fallen troops. During the ceremony, keynote speaker and Troy resident retired Army Brig. Gen. Donald Schenk delivered a heartfelt speech calling on residents to never forget the fallen – and those who survive them. "Memorial Day is the day we pause to give thanks to the people who died," Schenk said. "On this Memorial Day, we honor the generations of Americans who have fought and died to defend our freedom." Memorial Day is a day to remember the men and women who fought and died for our country. Who are you honoring today?

Last week, we told you about 92-year-old Rochester Hills resident Leon Gorsline, a former Marine who served valiantly in Guadalcanal until he was shot, ending his time in the military. Gorsline, one of only six men to survive Guadalcanal from his platoon, will be honored Monday by members of the Cpl Stanley L. Moore Detachment of the Marine Corps League, who will induct Gorsline into the league as a lifetime member following the Troy Memorial Day ceremony. During our interview with Gorsline, he paused to remember a fallen comrade. "One guy I'll never forget, his name is Bennie Jones," Gorsline said. "He was from Daytona Beach, Florida. He laid right next to me – he got shot through the head. He laid right next to me, and I'm still here. …

Buckle Up: 'Click It or Ticket' Campaign Kicks Off

Law enforcement agencies will be looking for motorists who aren't buckled up during the "Click It or Ticket" campaign now through June 5.

A busy season of barbecues, graduation parties and trips Up North is about to kick off and, in anticipation, the national Click It or Ticket campaign has begun. Officers from more than 200 Michigan law enforcement agencies will work to enforce the state's seat belt law, which requires all drivers, as well as passengers in the front seat or who are 15 or younger, to buckle up. "Michigan has a primary seat belt law, which means law enforcement can stop and ticket motorists solely for not being buckled up," the Michigan State Police website reads. The law also says children must ride in a car seat or booster seat until they are 8 years old or 4'9" tall, whichever comes first. Those who do not comply could face a $65 fine. "It's pretty much …

To celebrate the holiday weekend, these local attractions are offering special opportunities for local families.

Looking for a way to spend family time over the holiday weekend? Then don't miss these two local opportunties meant for a memorable Memorial Day.  In celebration of the 2012 Memorial Day weekend, the Detroit Zoo will remain open until 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. On Memorial Day, the Detroit Zoo will close at the regular time of 5 p.m. The Zoo opens at 9 a.m. each day.  “With all the new and exciting things to see and do, we want to give the community extra time to enjoy their zoo over the holiday weekend,” Detroit Zoological Society Executive Director Ron Kagan said in the press release. 5 Things to Throw on the Grill This Weekend

From kabobs to grilled watermelon and more, here are a few new things you can slap on the grill this Memorial Day weekend.

For many, Memorial Day weekend is about relaxing, spending time with friends and family and, of course, grilling. If you're looking to try out a new recipe this weekend, here are a few Patch favorites. This recipe comes from Oakland Township-Lake Orion Patch and serves two. Ingredients Marinade Ingredients Directions Combine and blend the marinade ingredients in a bowl or plastic bag. Cut up the steak into chunks and add to the marinade; coat thoroughly. Marinate for at least a couple hours. Boil the potatoes until somewhat tender (but not too tender, or they'll fall apart on the grill). Cut the potatoes, red pepper, mushrooms and sweet onion into chunks; add all ingredients to the skewers (see photos). Grill the skewers, turning …
