Oakland Mall Security Admits to Theft at Multiple Stores, Police Say

A manager at Prudential Security, Jeffrey Douglas Maul, 36, of Troy, faces more than 25 years of possible jail time.

Follow up to: Oakland Mall Security Arrested for Theft from Store, Reports Say For a series of thefts going back to January, a security manager at Oakland Mall was arrested and charged by Troy Police this week. Jeffrey Douglas Maul, 36, of Troy, was charged on Wednesday with breaking and entering a building, a 10-year felony, at Bosco's Barber Shop. He was also charged with four counts of larceny in a building, each a four-year felony, at different stores in the mall. Police responded to Manic Shoes on Monday, when approximately $300 was missing from a locked cash register in the store. Police said that in reviewing in-store video, a man identified by a fellow security officer as the security manager was seen going into the register. …

Oakland Mall Security Arrested for Theft from Store, Reports Say

The Taylor-based security firm said that a security member was terminated after being seen on security footage.

Troy Police arrested a member of the security team at Oakland Mall for trying to steal from one of the stores.  According to a report on WXYZ.com, the security member is currently being held at the Troy jail and charged with breaking and entering. Troy Police said that more information regarding the arrest would be available on Wednesday, following the suspect's arraignment. A statement from Prudential Security, a Taylor-based firm, indicates that a fellow Prudential security employee witnessed the alleged theft in progress while monitoring security footage. Feds Say Highland Park Officers Transported Cocaine from Oakland Mall

The FBI announced charges against four Highland Park officers whom federal officials said transported what they thought was cocaine from Oakland Mall to Taylor, according to reports in the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press.

Oakland Mall in Troy figures in a scandal involving four Highland Park police officers whom the FBI said accepted bribes and conspired to distribute cocaine. Federal authorities said that two Highland Park officers—Price Montgomery and Anthony Bynum—transported what they thought was two kilos of cocaine from Oakland Mall to Taylor on Nov. 15, 2012, according to a report in the Detroit News. Authorities also said Montgomery, Bynum, Shawn Williams and Craig Clayton moved what they thought was four kilos of cocaine from Oakland Mall on Jan. 23, 2013. Federal officials announced the charges against the four police officers at a press conference Friday, according to the Detroit Free Press. The four men are expected to be arraigned later Friday.

With Young Girl in Tow, Woman Shoplifts and Flees from Officers

The woman and child were last seen Thursday afternoon getting into a car outside Sears in Troy.

Loss prevention officers at Sears in Oakland Mall notified Troy Police of a retail fraud in progress just before 1 p.m. on Thursday. According to a media release from the Troy Police Department, a woman had entered the store pushing a stroller and holding hands with a child who appeared to be about six years old. "The woman shoplifted seven articles of children's clothing, which she concealed in the stroller before walking out of the store," reads the report. When Sears' loss prevention officers stopped the woman, she agreed to give back some of the stolen merchandise but still had three items concealed in her stroller, according to the report. Oakland Mall to Host "SPARKLE" Singing Challenge

The contest winner will receive $500 and a chance to visit New York City, appear on television and score a recording session with the Punch Monkeys.

The following information was provided by Melissa Blum at Allied-THA. Troy's Oakland Mall will play host on July 14 to the SPARKLE Singing Challenge, sponsored by Sony Pictures and Myspace. Registration for the event begins at 12:30 p.m.; the contest begins at 2 p.m. The Detroit winner will receive $500 in cash and a chance to compete for the national Grand Prize. The Grand Prize winner will win a trip to New York, an appearance on BET’s 106 & Park, a recording session with the Punch Monkeys producer and writing team, and a Myspace homepage feature. Hippo-Critical: Detroit Zoo Sculpture Once Housed at Oakland Mall Needs TLC

The cast terrazzo hippo near the zoo's entrance – which spent 20 years at Oakland Mall before moving to the zoo – is in critical condition, but staff say help is on the way.

The oval cavity in the torso of the lovable hippo that greets visitors at the main entrance of the Detroit Zoo is the least of her worries. It's her cracks that are starting to make her look under the weather. Zoo officials have wrapped Sleeping Hippo, the work of Russian artist Samuel Cashwan (1900-89), in plastic and placed temporary guardrails around her to keep visitors from playing on her. "She is showing her age. (She has) some cracks, but she can be saved," said Patricia Janeway, the zoo's communications director. "We are awaiting warmer temperatures to perform the restorative measures." The cast terrazzo sculpture was donated by the Dayton Hudson Co. in 1989.
