An eight-run sixth inning helps West team to take bragging rights in the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Star game for a second straight year Tuesday night.
DETROIT – The West All-Stars earned bragging rights over the East at the annual Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association (MHSBCA) All-Star game for a second year in a row at Comerica Park on Tuesday night. The West erased an early 4-2 deficit with five runs in the third inning and then blew the game open with an eight-run sixth. The West side batted around the order in the inning to take a commanding 16-6 lead. Its bullpen held the East scoreless in the final three innings to close out the victory. “It wasn’t how we drew it up,” East All-Stars and Birmingham Groves High School coach Jim Crosby said, laughing. “They had that one big inning that killed us. We couldn’t get anybody out, everybody got a chance to pitch and a couple …

The Colts fell 2-0 to Okemos in the championship game Saturday in East Lansing.
East Lansing, MI – The disappointment and frustration weren’t easy to hide for the Troy varsity girls soccer team. For a second straight season, the Colts made it all the way to Division 1 state finals only to be shutout. Okemos (24-1-1) won the state title Saturday with a 2-0 victory at DeMartin Stadium on the Michigan State University campus. Last year, Novi blanked the Colts 1-0 in the title game. “It’s a hard pill to swallow,” Troy coach Brian Zawislak said. “They wanted it so bad. The girls were really into it this season. I thought they were playing some of their best soccer at the end of the season, but Okemos was a fantastic team. They are a solid all-around team and tough to break down.” The problems for Zawislak’s squad started …

Penalty kick helps the Colts beat Canton 2-1 in the semifinals Wednesday night at Farmington High School.
Farmington, MI – Troy's Coach Brian Zawislak didn’t even shout out Irene Young’s number. When the referees called Canton goalkeeper Danielle Schendel for a shoving penalty right in front of the net, Young – Troy varsity soccer team’s leading scorer – quickly stepped up for a penalty shot with 18:52 to go in the Division 1 semifinals at Farmington High School on Wednesday afternoon. “I didn’t have to yell out, everyone knew who it was. She likes that role,” Zawislak said. “She likes to have that challenge to have to step up, she knows her team is counting on her to score goals.” She blasted the shot into the back of the net to give her team a two-goal lead. The Chiefs cut the deficit in half with a goal in the final 10 minutes, but it wasn’…

The Eagles varsity girls soccer team’s leading scorer captures the crown!
Ferndale’s Lexie Brisson-Fast wins the Patch Athlete of the Week title for May 28-June 2 to give the Eagles their first winner of the spring season. After a week of unscientific polling among Patch readers in Oakland County, Brisson-Fast had 92 votes or 46 percent of the total votes cast (200). She beat Athens shortstop Melissa Palmer, who had 78 votes (39 percent), in a close vote. Brisson-Fast helped Ferndale capture a district crown Saturday with three goals in a 5-0 win over Hazel Park. After the Vikings held her team scoreless for 20 minutes, the senior scored twice to the Eagles an advantage and help pave the way for the school’s first district title. Other athletes in the poll included: Taylor Morrissey – Berkley High School (…

Early fielding errors put the Red Hawks in a hole on Saturday afternoon at Hartland High School.
Hartland, MI – The early innings weren’t as kind to the Athens varsity softball team this weekend as they were a week ago. The Red Hawks used early leads to clinch a district title on June 2, but it was a different story against Lakeland on Saturday in the regional semifinals at Hartland High School. Athens (33-7-1) committed a couple fielding errors in the early innings that allowed the Eagles to jump out to an early 3-0 lead by the end of the second. “We made mistakes early, got in a hole 3-0 and couldn’t do anything,” Red Hawks coach Dave Marr said. “Obviously, they were a good team with a good pitcher. The story is those errors.” Nerves looked like they played a part in the fielding miscues. Athens was playing in its first regionals …

The Colts win 1-0 over Grosse Pointe South on Friday night in regional finals at Fraser High School.
Fraser, MI – Playing with a target on their backs hasn’t fazed the girls from Troy High School. The Colts are in the final four for a second straight season after beating a tough Grosse Pointe South team 1-0 in the Division 1 regional finals on Friday night at Fraser High School. “It’s really special to get back here, but the work is not done,” Colts coach Brian Zawislak said. Zawislak’s team lost 1-0 in the finals last season to Novi and returned this spring with high expectations. So far the girls have lived up to their potential. Troy (18-2-3) hasn’t allowed a single goal in five postseason games and continues to generate enough offense to keep its momentum going. Leading scorer Irene Young did it again for the Colts on Friday, scoring …

The Colts defense puts on impressive display Tuesday at Fraser High School to advance to regional finals.
Fraser, MI – Troy’s defensive performance on Tuesday in the Division 1 soccer regional semifinals at Fraser High School was impressive from any vantage point. Colts forward Irene Young watched her teammates up close on the field and called it “the best defensive performance all year.” Watching it from the sidelines, Troy coach Brian Zawislak agreed. He said his backline made all the right decisions in a 2-0 win over Anchor Bay (17-4-1) and were simply “outstanding.” “This team has a lot of veterans on it; they understand what it takes to win a championship and what it takes is solid defending,” he said. “They’ve really focused on that the last 10 games or so. We worked on our shape in the backfield and making good decisions.” The Tars’ …
