Letter to the Editor: Troy City Attorney is 'A Seasoned Professional'

"I am grateful that Troy's legal department is led by a woman of intelligence, skill, and the ability to perform in the face of public ire," writes Troy resident and Recall Janice Daniels co-founder John Kulesz.

Troy Patch accepts letters to the editor. Send yours to troypatch@patch.com; please include your full name and hometown. Letters may be edited for clarity. Dear Editor: By any account, the practice of law is not easy. It's an adversarial occupation, filled with irritated judges, opposing council practiced in the art of hostility, and clients that range from terrified to unreasonable. Having an unreasonable client is much more difficult when you have 80,000 of them. That's the challenge of being a municipal attorney. To be a municipal attorney is to represent a city as a whole, to work for each and every person who resides in that city. When you are held up to the scrutiny of thousands of people, grace under pressure is essential. Troy's …

John, Well said and beautifully written. I attended the Oakland County Court hearing. Judge Langford-Morris surprised the court room as she sent both sides to the jury room to resolve their own differences. That didn't work. Lori Grigg-Bluhm's presentation was phenomenal. She has earned her stripes. She is a proven professional who represents the City of Troy, protecting the City Charter and the …   more ›

From 41 to 6, Council Pares Down List of City Council Candidates

Council will interview the finalists at its Dec. 17 meeting.

Troy City Council pared a list of 41 applicants for the vacant Troy City Council seat down to six final candidates Monday evening at its regular meeting. "I never imagined we'd have 41," Mayor Dane Slater said. "I want to personally thank everyone who put their name in." In the first of two rounds of voting, Council members each named their top five choices. From that list, council members then each voted for their top four candidates. Though Council had agreed at the beginning of the study session to name five final candidates Monday evening, six were chosen due to a five-way tie. Edward Pennington received six votes while Richard Beaubien, Daniel Fair, Kessie Kaltsounis, Carmen Johnson and Bert Copple each received three votes. Council …

I see no discussion about Kessie Kaltsounis, to me she seems to have great qualifications as it relates to working in the city and it's various committees. Just on paper, seems to be one of the most qualified.   more ›

Secretary of State Sues Troy, Says 'State Law Requires An Election'

Secretary of Sate Ruth Johnson filed a lawsuit Friday against the Troy City Clerk Aileen Bittner, saying Troy residents "have the right to choose the city's mayor in February."

LANSING, Mich. — Secretary of State Ruth Johnson and Attorney General Bill Schuette issued a joint statement Friday afternoon on the lawsuit they filed against Troy City Clerk Aileen Bittner Friday in Oakland County Circuit Court. In the lawsuit, they claim the City has violated state law by not calling a special election on in February and instead choosing to follow City Charter by appointing Dane Slater mayor until the November 2013 city election. “I’m disappointed that city officials have chosen to go this route,” Johnson said in a press release Friday evening. “Unfortunately, we now must seek a legal remedy to uphold state election and recall law. Our position all along has been that state law requires an election in this situation. …

City Responds to Attorney General; Troy, Secretary of State Sued

In a final effort to avoid a lawsuit from the Michigan Attorney General's office, City Attorney Lori Grigg Bluhm responds Friday in a letter to its chief legal counsel.

Less than a day after the Michigan Attorney General's office threatened to sue Troy if it did not call a special election in February, Troy City Attorney Lori Grigg Bluhm once again defended the city's decision Friday to wait till November 2013 to hold an election to replace recalled Troy Mayor Janice Daniels. In the letter to Attorney General Bill Schuette's Chief Legal Counsel Richard Bandstra, Bluhm said Troy can satisfy both the state election law as well as the City Charter by holding a November 2013 election. "The City of Troy acknowledges that there is ambiguity in the recall and subsequent election process as provided under Michigan election law," Bluhm wrote, in part, in her two-page letter. "We are committed to uphold both State …

Kempen was right, Attorney Laurie Bluhm and Bittner were wrong and will both be named probably in the State of Michigah lawsuit against Troy. Congrat's to City Attorney Bluhm, another flub up, and she will keep flubbing up so that we need her to defend the City of Troy and pay her astronomical wages. We need to recall Bittner and Bluhm and find some new fresh blood. I am embarrassed by the way …   more ›

Troy City Attorney Lori Grigg Bluhm, in responding to a letter sent to her late Monday afternoon from state Director of Elections Christopher Thomas, sent a letter Tuesday challenging Thomas' reasons for ordering a special election on Feb. 26, 2013, to elect a replacement for Janice Daniels, who was recalled on Nov. 6. Thomas' letter arrived the same day Troy City Council voted 4-2 to appoint Dane Slater Mayor of Troy until the Nov. 5, 2013 regular election. State Orders Special Election for Troy; City to Refute Order

City administrators are drafting a response to a letter from the state director of elections ordering a special election in February to elect a new mayor.

In a letter sent Monday to Troy City Clerk Aileen Bittner and City Attorney Lori Grigg Bluhm, state Director of Elections Christopher Thomas directed the city to conduct a special election in February "to fill the vacancy created by former Mayor Daniels' recall." The letter arrived the same day Troy City Council voted 4-2 to appoint Dane Slater Mayor of Troy until the Nov. 5, 2013 regular election. "I understand the City's legal position to be that, pursuant to the Troy City Charter, the City intends to allow the person who was recently appointed to temporarily fill the vacancy in the office of Mayor to serve until a successor is elected at the next regularly scheduled city election" next November, he wrote. However, he asserted, the …

City Turns Away 2 Applicants Seeking to Run for Troy Mayor in February

Ed Kempen and Dan Brake left paperwork with the City Clerk Monday afternoon.

On Monday afternoon, two Troy residents – Ed Kempen and Dan Brake – attempted to turn in paperwork to run for mayor on Feb. 26, 2013.  According to a press release sent late Monday afternoon from Concerned Troy Citizens, whose members spoke out against the city's decision to follow its charter instead of state statute at last Wednesday's special meeting, the City Clerk "walked away from the two candidates without accepting the paperwork under the watchful eye of Troy's City Attorney Lori Grigg Bluhm." However, Troy City Clerk Aileen Bittner said the City could not accept the paperwork, since there is currently no election scheduled for February. At Monday evening's Troy City Council meeting, Council voted 4-2 to appoint Dane Slater as …
