5 Things to Know This Week: Drumline Competition at Troy Athens, Singles' Valentine Ball, Citizens Police Academy

Here's the scoop on what's happening in Troy for the week of Feb. 4.

1. Have a student taking the ACT test this year? Sylvan Learning Center will offer a prep course for high school juniors and seniors, which includes an ACT practice test. The courses are offered several times throughout the school year, including Monday at 6:30 p.m., and take place in the evenings at the Troy location. 2. Beginning Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., Troy Police will hold a 7-week Citizen Police Academy course in order to help residents gain a better understanding of the city’s law enforcement. The public is free to attend the sessions which will be held at the Troy Police Department. 3. Are you out of work or looking for a new job? Taste of Troy Brings the City's Best Food to One Spot

Tickets are now available for the annual food fest which will be held March 3 at the San Marino Club.

If the thought of either meats dipped in cheese-flavored fondues or maybe, flat crusted pizzas piled high with fresh vegetables or perhaps, cupcakes filled with chocolate buttercream makes your mouth water, you won’t want to miss the Taste of Troy event. Now in its 21st year, the city's original taste fest is back. On March 3, 35 nearby restaurants will bring their eats to the San Marino Club and showcase what Troy cuisine is all about. All proceeds from the event, sponsored this year by PNC Bank, will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Troy. WITH VIDEO: More Than 1,000 Protest Wisconsin Governor's Appearance in Troy

Teachers, union members and others chanted, marched and yelled at people arriving for a Republican dinner Tuesday at the San Marino Club, where Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin was to be a speaker.

More than 1,000 protesters chanted, marched and yelled as attendees arrived Tuesday evening for a Republican dinner at the San Marino Club in Troy. The 9th Congressional District Republican committee's Southeast Michigan Ronald Reagan Memorial Dinner 2012 was the event, and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker's appearance there was the draw for protesters. The crowd, estimated by Troy police to have reached about 1,300 people at one point, chanted "What do we want?" and an answering "Justice!" and "When do we want it?" "Now!" The protests, which started about 5 p.m. in advance of the 7 p.m. dinner program, stretched a whole block of Big Beaver Road. The Michigan chapter of the National Action Network headed by the Rev. Detroit-area Celebrities to 'Dance with our Local Stars'

Limited seating still available to watch local celebrities perform in a dance competition Friday at the San Marino Club in Troy.

Local celebrities and professional dancers will join together Friday and dance for a cause as the Tri-County Business Exchange hosts its "Dancing with our Local Stars" benefit at the San Marino Club in Troy. The event, which features well-known names in Detroit-area radio, television and government, serves to benefit the American Diabetes Association.
