Candidates for Mayor of Troy Talk Economy, Diversity, and More

Here's what happened when the public asked the questions at the League of Women Voters Troy Area forum.

Residents of Troy made their voices heard in deciding who should not be mayor last November and on Thursday, questioned those now campaigning to lead the city. Incumbent Mayor Dane Slater, along with fellow candidates Faris Alami, David Elsas, Marty Knollenberg and Scott Welborn participated in the League of Women Voters Troy Area forum at CMNTV Studios, the only event of its type currently scheduled prior to the May 7 consolidation election. One candidate, Jon Desjardins, did not participate. Slater was appointed mayor in late November of last year following the ouster of then-mayor Janice Daniels in the general election. The six men are running for a partial term ending Nov. 2015. Funding for construction of the multi-modal Troy Transit …

Troy City Council Stops Solar Panel System Proposal

The DTE Energy project, proposed at city-owned property at Interstate-75 and Long Lake Road, concerned residents nearby for its potential noise and real estate devaluation.

Amid concerns of real estate devaluation and noise pollution, the Troy City Council shot down plans for DTE Energy to build a solar panel system property at Monday's meeting. The property, just east of northbound Interstate-75 and south of Long Lake Road, is adjacent to the The Glens at Carlson Park subdivision, the residents of which guided the council's mind. "I am not going to want to go forward on this project if the residents are opposed to this," said Mayor Dane Slater. "From what I've heard from the residents ... I don't think you're going to get their approval." The City Council essentially reached a consensus on Monday night that the project, a 1-megawatt solar panel system to occupy five acres on a 21-acre site owned by the city…

City Working to Do Business with Troy Vendors

A policy enacted to encourage more participation, gives local businesses an advantage in the bidding process.

The Buy Local movement has a champion in Troy, evidenced in a recent City Council report which highlights an advantage for Troy vendors in the bidding process. Within the last five years, the city has awarded contracts to 39 Troy vendors from 211 local bidders, according to City Manager Brian Kischnick's report. Businesses with a local presence in Troy are given an opportunity to match the lowest bid, if the bid of a local business is within five percent of the lowest responsive and responsible non-local bidder, all other provisions being equal, the report continues. Troy, along with over 100 other local government agencies, is involved with the Michigan Inter-governmental Trade Network, an online platform for potential bidders and local …

Thank you for this article. Troy does a great job soliciting and working with local business to perform jobs that we outsource. We can always do better though. We have such a variety of local businesses in the area, its a shame to see a company from (name another city) gain a contract because no one local bid on the job. I'm sure we can increase the 39 awarded contracts. Getting the word out to …   more ›

Fairer to do a flat percent tax on all pension money and simpler, too, can get rid of the 6 page of various scenarios of public/private pensions, deceased spouse source of pension, more than one spouse in the picture, different tiers of birthdates involved with your spouse, yada, yada...it's nonsensical.   more ›
