Troy Workshop Will Ask Residents About County Parks, Recreation Services

Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commission is conducting several workshops - including one in Troy on April 17 - asking residents which services they value most.

The Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commission is conducting a series of public workshops this month, including one in Troy, to gather input on parks and recreation services. The commission is in the process of developing a Cost Recovery Model and Philosophy and wants feedback from Oakland County residents, business owners and others who are interested. All are welcome to attend the free workshops, which will be conducted by parks staff and recreation consulting firm GreenPlay LLC on April 16 and 17. Troy Senior Citizens Move and Groove to the Harlem Shake

Local university student encourages group to have fun and get active.

Gloria Buccini of Troy, together with a group of fellow seniors, stars in an ode to the "Shake" filmed Friday at the Troy Community Center, wearing an Easter rabbit hat. "I saw it for the first time this morning and I said, 'That looks like a lot of fun,'" Buccini said of the "Shake" concept, a popular online meme. "I'm the type to do anything. ... It's nice to be able to publicize Troy and I had a great time moving around." Free Tax Assistance This Week for Troy Seniors

Help for low-to-moderate income seniors can be found at the Troy Community Center this week.

AARP Tax-Aide volunteers, trained in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service, will help low to moderate income seniors prepare tax forms at the Troy Community Center (3179 Livernois, Troy) this Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Those who are homebound are encouraged to ask a friend or relative to make an appointment to bring in the information, according to a press release from the City of Troy. Telephone assistance is not available for income tax return preparation. No walk-ins will be accepted, but classes will take place each Friday through April 12. Appointments can be made by calling (248) 526-2608.

Community Center Available as 'Cooling Center' in Extreme Heat

Residents can find relief from the summer heat free of charge at the Troy Community Center.

The City of Troy is offering its Community Center as a cooling center for residents who may have a power outage or similar emergency or just need a place to beat the heat during extreme weather conditions. "The extreme high temperatures, humidity and heat indexes are tough on our community, especially for those residents who lose their electricity or do not have air conditioning,” Community Affairs Director Cindy Stewart said. “The Community Center can provide a short-term refuge for those who may need it.” The Troy Community Center is open weekdays from 5:30 a.m.-10 p.m., Saturday from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. and Sundays from 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. All recreation areas of the facility, including the pool, gymnasium, and fitness areas, are only open to …

City of Troy to Host Blood Drives During Critical Shortage

The blood drives will be held at the Troy Community Center on April 25 and 26.

To supplement critically low blood supplies in the area, the City of Troy is sponsoring two Red Cross blood drives on Wednesday, April 25 and Thursday, April 26 from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. in room 305 of the Troy Community Center. And for those who prefer to donate blood later in the day, First Presbyterian Church of Troy is also hosting a blood drive on April 25 from 2-8 p.m. "The blood needs of our community can only be met by support from volunteer blood donors," City of Troy Community Affairs Director Cindy Stewart said. "Donations are critical for burn victims, open-heart surgeries, some chemotherapy and leukemia patients, and disaster relief. One donation can help save the lives of up to three people." Harmonica Ensemble Performs at Community Center, Seeks New Members

The Mouth Organ Grinders harmonica ensemble is open to all and meets every Monday morning at the Troy Community Center.

Whether you're a seasoned musician looking to try something new or a non-musician hoping to learn how to play an instrument for the first time, the Troy-based Mouth Organ Grinders welcome new members and encourage you to join their ranks. Founded 14 years ago, the Mouth Organ Grinders perform five times a year and meet for practice from 9:30-11 a.m. every Monday morning at the Troy Community Center. The players take the summer off. And if you can't read music, ensemble director Jerry Coval says don't worry – he'll teach you that, too.
